Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph surveys the present state of Monte Carlo methods. we have dallied with certain topics that have interested us Although personally, we hope that our coverage of the subject is reasonably complete; at least we believe that this book and the references in it come near to exhausting the present range of the subject. On the other hand, there are many loose ends; for example we mention various ideas for variance reduction that have never been seriously appli(:d in practice. This is inevitable, and typical of a subject that has remained in its infancy for twenty years or more. We are convinced Qf:ver theless that Monte Carlo methods will one day reach an impressive maturity. The main theoretical content of this book is in Chapter 5; some readers may like to begin with this chapter, referring back to Chapters 2 and 3 when necessary. Chapters 7 to 12 deal with applications of the Monte Carlo method in various fields, and can be read in any order. For the sake of completeness, we cast a very brief glance in Chapter 4 at the direct simulation used in industrial and operational research, where the very simplest Monte Carlo techniques are usually sufficient. We assume that the reader has what might roughly be described as a 'graduate' knowledge of mathematics. The actual mathematical techniques are, with few exceptions, quite elementary, but we have freely used vectors, matrices, and similar mathematical language for the sake of conciseness.

Book Synopsis Cooperative Phenomena in Biology by : George Karreman
Download or read book Cooperative Phenomena in Biology written by George Karreman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperative Phenomena in Biology deals with cooperation in biology and covers topics such as cooperative specific adsorption; the kinetics of oxygen binding to hemoglobin; allosteric control of cooperative adsorption and conformation changes; and cooperativity in biological surfaces responding to topical treatment. The use of Monte Carlo methods to investigate the behavior of cooperative Ising models is also described. This book is comprised of five chapters and opens with a discussion on the phenomenon of cooperative specific adsorption and its importance for the understanding of fundamental biological phenomena. The derivation of the cooperative specific adsorption isotherm both stochastically and on the basis of statistical mechanics is explained. The next chapter reviews the theory of the allosteric control of cooperative adsorption and conformation changes and outlines a molecular model for physiological activities according to the association-induction hypothesis. The reader is also introduced to a kinetic equation for hemoglobin oxygenation based on the infinite chain; the use of bioelectrometric methods to study solute interactions with biocolloidal surfaces responding to topical treatment; and the use of Monte Carlo computations to determine the behavior of cooperative Ising models. This monograph is intended for biologists, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians.

Book Synopsis Metallic Alloys: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives by : J.S. Faulkner
Download or read book Metallic Alloys: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives written by J.S. Faulkner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new materials is recognized as one of the major elements in the overall technological evolution that must go on in order to sustain and even improve the quality of life for citizens of all nations. There are many components to this development, but one is to achieve a better understanding of the properties of materials using the most sophisticated scientific tools that are available. As condensed matter physicists and materials scientists work toward this goal, they find that it is useful to divide their efforts and focus on specific areas, because certain analytical and theoretical techniques will be more useful for the study of one class of materials than another. One such area is the study of metals and metallic alloys, which are used in the manufacture of products as diverse as automobiles and space stations. Progress in this area has been very rapid in recent years, and the new developments come from many different countries. For these reasons the Advanced Research Workshop Programme in the NATO Scientific Affairs Division has seen fit to sponsor several meetings to bring together the researchers and students working in this field from the NATO countries and elsewhere. There have been a series of NATO-ASI's that have dealt with the results of research on the electronic structure of materials and the properties of metals, alloys, and interfaces. They are: "Electrons in finite and infinite structures" P. Phariseau and L.

Book Synopsis Study of Local Order of Solid-solution Strengthening in Columbium Alloys by : Peter Strom Rudman
Download or read book Study of Local Order of Solid-solution Strengthening in Columbium Alloys written by Peter Strom Rudman and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains three independent sections. The results of experimental X-ray diffuse scattering for Nb-Ti alloys are presented, showing that this system apparently exhibits relatively little order. The theory of diffuse scattering is rederived, yielding an order-fluctuation-dependent small-angle scattering. The question of the range of order fluctuation is treated. (Author).

Book Synopsis Diffuse Neutron Scattering from Crystalline Materials by : Victoria M. Nield
Download or read book Diffuse Neutron Scattering from Crystalline Materials written by Victoria M. Nield and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive account of diffuse neutron scattering, a unique tool for determining structural disorder in solids. The text takes the reader through theoretical, computational and experimental developments in the subject and describes in detail its application to a number of structural disorder problems. These include the more traditional subjects of substitutional disorder in alloys and orientational disorder in molecular systems as well as the more recent studies of superior and framework materials. Particular emphasis is placed on recent refinement methods for data interpretation and these are compared with established computer simulation techniques and analytical approaches. The book collects disparate themes into one unique volume, which is written as an introduction to the methods for graduate scientist and as a valuable reference or the expert crystallographer who wishes to apply modern interpretative techniques to diffuse scattering data.
