Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author gives a brief introduction to the scope of lattice QCD calculations in his effort to extract the fundamental parameters of the standard model. This goal is illustrated by two examples. First the author discusses the extraction of CKM matrix elements from measurements of form factors for semileptonic decays of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons such as D → Ke[nu]. Second, he presents the status of results for the kaon B parameter relevant to CP violation. He concludes the talk with a short outline of his experiences with optimizing QCD codes on the CM5.

This attitude usually stems from a lack of knowledge of the field. The aim of the present volume is to rectify this by introducing in an elementary way several topics, which we believe are appropriate for, and of possible interest to, both particle and nuclear physicists who are non-experts in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilising lattice QCD to calculate nucleon matrix elements has had a huge impact on the knowledge of the structure of nucleons. From the comparison to experimental data, to the new insights into the structure of nucleons, the practices of lattice QCD has cemented itself as a fundamental field for particle physics. Some key contributions to the understanding of nucleon structure lattice QCD can provide are parameters needed for the beyond standard model (BSM) extensions, understanding the size of the nucleons via the charge radii and the decomposition of the spin and angular momentum of the quarks and gluons within the nucleon. But the extraction of hadron matrix elements in lattice QCD using the standard two- and three-point correlator functions demands careful attention to systematic uncertainties. Although other systematics including discretisation, renormalisation and chiral extrapolation effects need to be analysed, one of the most recent and emerging sources of systematic error is contamination from excited-states. This thesis applies the variational method to calculate the axial vector current gA [A subscript], the scalar current gS [S subscript], the tensor current gT [T subscript] and the quark momentum fraction [x] of the nucleon and we compare the results to the more commonly used summation and two-exponential fit methods. Proceeding with the same comparison of methods, we extend the calculation to non-zero momentum transfer to access the vector form factors for both the proton and neutron, as well as the iso-vector combination of the axial and induced pseudoscalar form factors for the proton. The results demonstrate how excited-states affect the extraction of nucleon matrix elements and in the process discovering that the variational approach offers a more efficient and robust method for the determination of nucleon matrix elements. Through this demonstration of how excited-states impact lattice QCD calculation and how we can use methods to suppress these excited-states, we can hope to achieve higher and higher precision determinations of nucleon matrix elements form lattice QCD which will aid in our understanding of the structure of nucleons.

We use a large set of the MIMD Lattice Computation Collaboration's gauge con gurations with a2 tadpole-improved staggered sea quarks and tadpole-improved L uscher-Weisz gluons. We use the a2 tadpole-improved action for valence light quarks and the Sheikoleslami-Wohlert action with the Fermilab interpretation for the valence charm quark. Our calculation covers the complete set of ve operators needed to constrain new physics models for D-meson mixing. We match our matrix elements to the MS-NDR scheme evaluated at 3GeV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With ever increasing computational resources and improvements in algorithms, new opportunities are emerging for lattice gauge theory to address key questions in strongly interacting systems, such as nuclear matter. Calculations today use dynamical gauge-field ensembles with degenerate light up/down quarks and the strange quark and it is possible now to consider including charm-quark degrees of freedom in the QCD vacuum. Pion masses and other sources of systematic error, such as finite-volume and discretization effects, are beginning to be quantified systematically. Altogether, an era of precision calculation has begun and many new observables will be calculated at the new computational facilities. The aim of this set of lectures is to provide graduate students with a grounding in the application of lattice gauge theory methods to strongly interacting systems and in particular to nuclear physics. A wide variety of topics are covered, including continuum field theory, lattice discretizations, hadron spectroscopy and structure, many-body systems, together with more topical lectures in nuclear physics aimed a providing a broad phenomenological background. Exercises to encourage hands-on experience with parallel computing and data analysis are included.

Book excerpt: At a time of robust worldwide debates on globalization, this compact volume shows: how successful each of the East Asian economies have been in harnessing globalization by appropriate and alternative means to catch up with the advanced economies; and what implications can be drawn to assess Chinese economic growth in context. The essays in this book include supporting notes to review effectively the highlights of the development of East Asia, over the six decades after World War II: why the region has performed so well economically relative to the rest of the developing world; which are the most challenging limitations to be addressed; and several sensational controversies in the development economics literature to be sensibly resolved.

Book excerpt: In this thesis the author discusses the phenomenology of supersymmetric models by means of experimental data set analysis of the electric dipole moment. There is an evaluation of the elementary processes contributing to the electric dipole moments within R-parity-violating supersymmetry, which call for higher-order perturbative computations. A new method based on linear programming is developed and for the first time the non-trivial parameter space of R-parity violation respecting the constraints from existing experimental data of the electric dipole moment is revealed. As well, the impressive efficiency of the new method in scanning the parameter space of the R-parity-violating sector is effectively demonstrated. This new method makes it possible to extract from the experimental data a more reliable constraint on the R-parity violation.

Book excerpt: The book is based on the lectures delivered at the XCIII Session of the École de Physique des Houches, held in August, 2009. The aim of the event was to familiarize the new generation of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows with the principles and methods of modern lattice field theory, which aims to resolve fundamental, non-perturbative questions about QCD without uncontrolled approximations. The emphasis of the book is on the theoretical developments that have shaped the field in the last two decades and that have turned lattice gauge theory into a robust approach to the determination of low energy hadronic quantities and of fundamental parameters of the Standard Model. By way of introduction, the lectures begin by covering lattice theory basics, lattice renormalization and improvement, and the many faces of chirality. A later course introduces QCD at finite temperature and density. A broad view of lattice computation from the basics to recent developments was offered in a corresponding course. Extrapolations to physical quark masses and a framework for the parameterization of the low-energy physics by means of effective coupling constants is covered in a lecture on chiral perturbation theory. Heavy-quark effective theories, an essential tool for performing the relevant lattice calculations, is covered from its basics to recent advances. A number of shorter courses round out the book and broaden its purview. These included recent applications to the nucleon—nucleon interation and a course on physics beyond the Standard Model.
