Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Theory of Diffraction presents the fundamentals of diffraction theory. This book discusses other topics, such as absorption in cylindrical or slab-shaped specimens, which do not closely involve the fundamentals of diffraction. Organized into seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the fundamentals of wave motion and a short account of the interaction of atoms with X-ray, electrons, and neutrons. This text then examines the differences between atomic scattering factors for the various radiations. Other chapters consider a number of problems in which the distribution of scattering sources is either one-dimensional in nature or can be reduced to one dimension. This book discusses as well the principle of superposition, which ensures that Fourier analysis has an application to diffraction theory. The final chapter deals with the importance of reciprocal lattice on the relation it bears to the crystal lattice. This book is a valuable resource for metallurgists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents two distinct aspects of wave dynamics – wave propagation and diffraction – with a focus on wave diffraction. The authors apply different mathematical methods to the solution of typical problems in the theory of wave propagation and diffraction and analyze the obtained results. The rigorous diffraction theory distinguishes three approaches: the method of surface currents, where the diffracted field is represented as a superposition of secondary spherical waves emitted by each element (the Huygens–Fresnel principle); the Fourier method; and the separation of variables and Wiener–Hopf transformation method. Chapter 1 presents mathematical methods related to studying the problems of wave diffraction theory, while Chapter 2 deals with spectral methods in the theory of wave propagation, focusing mainly on the Fourier methods to study the Stokes (gravity) waves on the surface of inviscid fluid. Chapter 3 then presents some results of modeling the refraction of surf ace gravity waves on the basis of the ray method, which originates from geometrical optics. Chapter 4 is devoted to the diffraction of surface gravity waves and the final two chapters discuss the diffraction of waves by semi-infinite domains on the basis of method of images and present some results on the problem of propagation of tsunami waves. Lastly, it provides insights into directions for further developing the wave diffraction theory.

Powder Diffraction: Theory and Practice provides an advanced introductory text about modern methods and applications of powder diffraction in research and industry. The authors begin with a brief overview of the basic theory of diffraction from crystals and powders. Data collection strategies are described including x-ray, neutron and electron diffraction setups using modern day apparatus including synchrotron sources. Data corrections, essential for quantitative analysis are covered before the authors conclude with a discussion of the analysis methods themselves. The information is presented in a way that facilitates understanding the information content of the data, as well as best practices for collecting and analyzing data for quantitative analysis. This long awaited book condenses the knowledge of renowned experts in the field into a single, authoritative, overview of the application of powder diffraction in modern materials research. The book contains essential theory and introductory material for students and researchers wishing to learn how to apply the frontier methods of powder diffraction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed both for experimentalists who study rough surfaces and the dynamics of thin film growth using diffraction techniques and for theorists who wish to learn of such rough surfaces and dynamic behavior in Fourier space, this monograph quickly brings the readers to forefront research in the area of the dynamics of interface growth. Graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as those readers who have very little prior knowledge of diffraction can pick up the subject matter with little difficulty. This monograph gives a brief review and summary at the end of each chapter. After the introduction of the elementary theory of diffraction in Chapter I, Chapter II discusses the various parameters and correlation functions that are essential in describing a rough surface. In Chapter III, the authors not only show analytical forms of the diffraction structure factor for both rough crystalline and non-crystalline surfaces, but also outline the methods of extracting the interface width, the lateral correlation length and the roughness parameter from the diffraction structure factor. To present the basic physical concepts underlying the scaling hypothesis during dynamic growth, in Chapter IV, a detailed description of the dynamic scaling properties of the height-height correlation function, the height difference function and the structure factor is given. The structure factor from a dynamic growth front is derived in Chapter V. An example of a quantitative measurement of the dynamic growth front of an epitaxial system is also given in this chapter. In Chapter VI, a particular type of rough surfaces having a diverging interface width associated with an equilibrium surface roughening transition is discussed. A comparison of the diffraction characteristics from divergent and non-divergent interface is also summarized.

Book excerpt: The book presents a new method for solving various diffraction and scattering problems in acoustics, electrodynamics, and quantum mechanics. Each version of the method is based on the representation of the diffracted field in the form of a series in the eigenfunctions of an auxiliary homogeneous problem in which the spectral parameter is usually not the frequency. This allows one to treat problems not only in bounded but also in unbounded domains or in the entire space. For example, for the problem of diffraction on a metallic body, the homogeneous problem of the same form can be used with impedance as the spectral parameter. The transparency coefficient, the dielectric constant, etc. can also be used as the spectral parameter. The method is especially effective for the analysis of resonance systems, in particular, of open resonators and waveguides. The method permits one to represent the exact solution in unbounded domains in the form of a series (since the spectrum is discrete), without an additional integral with respect to the spectral parameter, and use the variational approach though the corresponding problems are usually nonself-adjoint.

Book excerpt: This book presents a new and original method for the solution of boundary value problems in angles for second-order elliptic equations with constant coefficients and arbitrary boundary operators. This method turns out to be applicable to many different areas of mathematical physics, in particular to diffraction problems in angles and to the study of trapped modes on a sloping beach. Giving the reader the opportunity to master the techniques of the modern theory of diffraction, the book introduces methods of distributions, complex Fourier transforms, pseudo-differential operators, Riemann surfaces, automorphic functions, and the Riemann–Hilbert problem. The book will be useful for students, postgraduates and specialists interested in the application of modern mathematics to wave propagation and diffraction problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the study of short-wave diffraction problems, asymptotic methods - the ray method, the parabolic equation method, and its further development as the "etalon" (model) problem method - play an important role. These are the meth ods to be treated in this book. The applications of asymptotic methods in the theory of wave phenomena are still far from being exhausted, and we hope that the techniques set forth here will help in solving a number of problems of interest in acoustics, geophysics, the physics of electromagnetic waves, and perhaps in quantum mechanics. In addition, the book may be of use to the mathematician interested in contemporary problems of mathematical physics. Each chapter has been annotated. These notes give a brief history of the problem and cite references dealing with the content of that particular chapter. The main text mentions only those pUblications that explain a given argument or a specific calculation. In an effort to save work for the reader who is interested in only some of the problems considered in this book, we have included a flow chart indicating the interdependence of chapters and sections.
