It is constantly broken down and rebuilt in a process known as remodeling. When slightly less bone is deposited than resorbed, it results in osteopenia and eventually osteoporosis, which predisposes the bone to fracture during minimal trauma. Osteoporosis is a condition of generalized skeletal fragility, or "weak bones". According to the Canadian Healthy Aging questionnaire in 2009, 19.2% of women reported being diagnosed with osteoporosis. With the rise of the aging population, the prevalence and cost of osteoporosis is sure to increase as well. The best method of preventing osteoporosis is building strong bones from a young age. Exercise can be used as a factor to build stronger bones at any age. Percussive activity has been shown to lead to increased bone mineral density (BMD), which explains why female athletes tend to have higher BMD than age-matched sedentary controls. This thesis presents a study comparing the BMD of female athletes in hockey and synchronized swimming to sedentary controls. 70 participants, 24 hockey players, 20 synchronized swimmers, and 26 sedentary controls participated in this study. Participants underwent three DXA scans (one total body and two regional scans) and answered a questionnaire about their menstrual history. BMD values were analyzed using ANCOVA controlling for age and weight. Predictors of BMD were also analyzed using step-wise regression. The long-term effects of athletic participation on BMD should be examined. Objectives. This study was designed to: (1) Determine the prevalence of varsity athletic participation among female university graduates who participated in a mail survey; and, (2) Compare BMDs of high school varsity female athletes with women who were sedentary during the same time period, while controlling for covariates. Methods. A survey was mailed to 7291 alumnae of 2 Southern California universities in the classes of 1987-1991. The results of this study suggest that the influence of various anthropometric and performance-based factors on BMD in female collegiate athletes, depends on the type mechanical loading that is performed during sport participation. While weight was reported to be the most influential factor for BMD in GL sports, extracellular fluid was the most influential factor for ML sports.

Exploration of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake provides insight on possible nutrition trends in specific athlete populations and risks for deficiencies. Calcium, magnesium, and zinc affect physiological mechanisms and systems needed for athletic performance, such as calcium for bone health; magnesium for energy production; and, zinc for the function of hundreds of enzymes and proteins. One purpose of our research was to determine the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc in female and male athletes, including runners, triathletes, rowers, CrossFit athletes, and General athletes, 18 years of age and older. We also investigated the presence of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake of these minerals. Finally, we examined possible correlations among these mineral intakes and body composition (bone mineral density [BMD] and percent body fat) to determine the strongest predictors of body composition. We evaluated the dietary intake and body composition of 247 athletes, 129 women and 118 men, with a mean age of 34.86±11.38 years. The population included runners (n=90), General athletes (n=59), triathletes (n=43), rowers (n=34), and CrossFit athletes (n=21). Dietary intake was assessed via a 2005 Block Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), which analyzes one's annual macronutrient and micronutrient intake. Bone mineral density (total body, lumbar spine, and dual femoral neck) and percent body fat were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). One sample T-tests were used to compare the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc to the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) in female and male athletes. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine differences in dietary intake between the sexes and among various sports. Multiple regression analyses were utilized to identify the strongest predictors for BMD and percent body fat. All data were analyzed using standard SPSS version 25 software, with the alpha a priori set at 0.05. Calcium is a critical nutrient for bone metabolism that has also been shown to enhance weight loss effects secondary to diet. PURPOSE: To determine whether eight months of calcium supplementation, in a liquid, shelf-stable form, increases bone mineral density or decreases body weight and/or body fat in free-living young adult women. METHODS: Volunteer subjects (n=42) were randomly assigned to a supplement group receiving 1,125 mg Ca2+/day (CA-BEV) or to a free-living control group (CON), which did not receive the supplement. At baseline and after the 8-month intervention (POST), dietary intake was assessed using 3-day diet records. Total body composition (body fat percentage, %FatTB; abdominal percentage fat, %FatAb; fat mass, FM; non-bone fat-free mass, FFM) and bone mineral density (lumbar spine and femoral neck; BMD) were measured via dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Subjects also completed a sub-maximal treadmill exercise test to estimate respiratory fitness at baseline and POST. RESULTS: At POST, the CA-BEV group's calcium intake (1,868[plus or minus]941 mg/d) was significantly greater than (p
