Spoilsports is the first comprehensive review of this issue, integrating pioneering academic research, theoretical perspectives, and practical guidelines for performers, coaches, administrators and policy-makers. Key topics include: * 'moral panic' * children's rights * masculinity and power * making and implementing policy * leadership in sport. Spoilsports draws extensively on the personal experiences of athletes and those involved in sport. Challenging and controversial, this book represents an important step towards tackling a difficult issue. It is essential reading for coaches, athletes, parents, policy-makers and all those with a personal or professional interest in sport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating the Body presents a history of physical education in Canada, shedding light on its major advocates, innovators, and institutions. The book traces the major developments in physical education from the early nineteenth century to the present day – both within and beyond schools – and concludes with a vision for the future. It examines the realities of Canada’s classed, gendered, and racialized society and reveals the rich history of Indigenous teachings and practices that were marginalized and erased by the residential school system. Today, with the worrying decline in physical activity levels across the population, Educating the Body is indispensable to understanding our policy options moving ahead.

This book was released on 2011-07-14 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am not against sport and related physical activity. What I am arguing is that, employed properly and correctly, exercise and sport–as one of a number of vital social forces (e.g., nationalism, ecology)–could contribute to the improvement of the current situation in human health enormously. Additionally, in the case of related physical activity (i.e., regular exercise or “physical activity education”) in the developed world, I believe humans are too often “abusing it by first not understanding it, and then by not using it more intelligently”! (Ironically, in the “undeveloped world,” people often get too much “exercise” just to stay alive!) Moreover, I believe that the active use of competitive sport worldwide to promote what have been called moral values, traits or attributes leading to world peace and good will, as opposed to so-called socio-instrumental values that often are overly self-serving. This would tend to create a social force of such strength and power that humankind might be helped as it confronts the social and physical devastation looming ahead. At the very least, I believe such active promotion would delay to a considerable degree the onset of what is increasingly becoming a destructive societal situation.)

Book excerpt: A ground breaking text in the developing field of public health nutrition.' from the foreword by Basil S. Hetzel At last! A book that approaches public health nutrition in a scholarly, scientific and evidence based manner that at the same time delivers the practical competencies and skills required by the professional Public Health Nutritionist.' Elizabeth Belton, Senior Lecturer, School of Life Sciences, The Robert Gordon University. How can the nutritional health of populations be improved through action at local, national and global levels? The work of public health nutritionists is to bring population-wide perspectives to the relationship between food and health. Systematically drawing on international research, in Public Health Nutrition leading international practitioners present both the theoretical underpinnings and applied nature of the field of public health nutrition. The book is peer reviewed and divided into four sections: * Principles - presents conceptual frameworks, solutions, responsibilities and outcome measures, philosophical and evidential dimensions, standards and dietary guidelines. * Populations - explores groups for whom nutrition is especially relevant, providing analysis of the food and health relationship from physiological, social, cultural, political and economic perspectives. * Priorities - examines key issues including vulnerable populations, obesity, indigenous nutrition, international nutrition, the nutritional transition, food system trends and sustainability. * Practices - covers professional skills for public health practitioners including monitoring the food and nutrition situation of populations, physical activity, research skills, project management, professional practice, health promotion and communication, policy and politics. Public Health Nutrition is an essential resource for public health practitioners, researchers and administrators, as well as students of nutrition, dietetics and public health wishing to obtain advanced and specialised competencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport is assumed by many to promote those character traits generally deemed desirable, such as fair play, sportsmanship, obedience to authority, hard work and a commitment to excellence. As sport is a microcosm of society, the same types of deviant behaviour found in the larger social system can be expected to be found in sport. Society values winners and justifies the win at all costs mentality. Industrialization and capitalism have long legitimized this reality. Whether or not an athlete violates norms of acceptable behaviour will be determined by his or her own self-evaluation of ethic and morals. Written specifically for students of both Sports Science and Physical Education, "e;Sport and Physical Education: The Key Concepts"e; is a reference guide to the disciplines, themes, topics and concerns current in contemporary sport. Entries on such diverse subjects as professionalism, history, exercise physiology and education offer an up-to-date perspective on the changing face of sport science. It is hoped that the present book will be of immensely useful for the students of physical education and sports sciences and other related courses.
