Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar and Pompey in Greece: Selections From Caesar's Civil War, Book III To aid in the study 'of termination: a table is given containing some of the more common and most important. So far as I have observed, this feature is entirely new. Under each termination is placed a list of words taken from the text to illustrate its force as simply as possible. As continual repetition is necessary to fix the force of terminations, it seemed that a list, containing neither too many endings nor too many illustrations, would prove to be of use to both teacher and taught. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ...1 praetor: the word the Romans used to translate the Greek arpaTttybs, military governor. 33 7 succurratur: impersonal; 146. d; H. 302. 6. 33 11 scalas: scaling ladders. Some were like our common ladders. Some consisted of several parts which, when put together, formed one large ladder. Others were made entirely of ropes or leather, and had large iron hooks at the end with which to fasten them to the wall. Those mentioned in the text seem to have been constructed on the spot out of raw material. 33 11 musculosque: a sort of siied, much stronger than the vinea. Caesar describes one constructed to undermine the walls of Massilia. Two timbers were laid side by side on the ground, four feet apart, in which were set upright posts five feet high; these were joined together by rafters, and the whole was roofed over with timbers two feet thick, which were held in place by metal plates and nails. The roof was then covered with bricks and mortar, kept in place by pieces of wood fastened along the edges of the roof and projecting above it. The bricks and mortar would protect the mu sculus against fire but not against water, so they were covered with skins; but as the skins were not proof against fire, they were covered with rags, which would deaden the blows of the stones and would not readily burn. 33 12 crates: hurdles, fascines, --twigs or osiers interwoven or bound up in bundles. They were used in an assault to ward off the enemy's missiles, being placed over the soldier's head; in 10 23 Caesar uses them like plutei, as a shelter for the men to work behind, while intrenching themselves. Light ones were sometimes used to fill up moats outside the fortifications of a town, in order to facilitate the assaults of the besiegers. Pluteus. I 33 14...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caesar's Civil War, the story of the general's contest with the Pompeian party through nineteen months of civil war, is an unfinished masterpiece. The author abandoned it when he found himself living in a different world than that which saw its commencement. The narrative ends after Pompey's death, amidst the preliminaries to the Alexandrian war that initiated the next phase of the fight for primacy of Rome. The work shows the brilliance for which Caesar's oratory, like his generalship, was known: it was a political judgment, not a literary one, that relegated the Civil War to the file drawer. The primary topics covered in this introductory book are the generic background of Caesar's commentarii or notebooks; his selection of material; the contemporary context of the civil war; the literary techniques that carry the story; and the work's characterization and structure. General aids to the reader include maps to accompany the particular narrative events discussed, a timeline of Caesar's life and the civil war, explanations of technical terms of Roman history, and a section on Roman names and prominent persons of Caesar's time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great were two of the greatest generals Rome ever produced. Together they had brought vast stretches of territory under Roman dominion. But in 49 BC they turned against one another and plunged Rome into civil war, with legion pitched against legion in a vicious battle for political domination of the vast Roman world. Based on original sources, Adrian Goldsworthy's book provides a gripping account of this desperate power struggle, in which the armies were evenly matched but Caesar's genius as a commander and his remarkable luck brought him victory in 45 BC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian Romane examines the campaigns of Julius Caesar throughout the civil wars that followed his famous crossing of the Rubicon, through to the defeat of the final Pompeian diehards at the battle of Munda. He analyzes Caesar's generalship in the widest sense, with a strong emphasis on the logistical and financial effort required to put his legions in the field and keep them equipped, fed and paid. The attention given to this important but often-neglected aspect sets this account apart from many others. The author discusses the nature of late Republican Roman armies, describing their organization, tactics and equipment. The fact that such armies were employed both by and against Caesar only emphasizes the role of generalship in the outcome. This is followed by a detailed account of the strategic maneuvers in Caesar's epochal duel with Pompey the Great and the resultant battles at Dyrrhachium and Pharsalus. The final campaigns to mop up opposition in Spain and Africa are studied in equal detail to give a complete picture of Caesar's command performance in these history-shaping events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 48 BC, following the earlier battle at Dyrrhachium, the two greatest Roman commanders of their generation met in battle again at Pharsalus in Greece. Julius Caesar, conqueror of Gaul, had been defeated at Dyrrhachium and forced to retreat but now stood at bay to face Pompey the Great, conqueror of the East. At stake lay the future of the ailing Roman Republic, each man believing he alone had the solution to restoring Republican government. Gareth Sampson examines the campaigns which led up to the battle as well as the role played by the various regional powers who got drawn into the Roman Civil War. The Battle of Pharsalus itself is analyzed in detail to determine the strengths and weakness of both armies and their various commanders, as well as the organization, equipment and tactics of the forces involved in the battle which culminated in a decisive victory for Caesar. The author concludes with consideration of the aftermath of the battle, which saw Pompey murdered in Egypt and Caesar distracted by the affairs of the East.
