Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of a 0.25-mm CdTe detector has been calculated for photon energies ranging from 0.06 to 5.0 MeV using the computer code CYLTRAN. Results show that the response is highly energy dependent, varying by almost three decades over this energy range. The response also depends significantly on the amount of scattering material adjacent to the detector. Some additional calculations show that the response can be made more uniform by using a lead/tin filter and by employing more than one energy-discrimination level, but good uniformity of response is difficult to achieve. At 2 MeV a response of 2.1 x 10.7 counts/(mm squared gray) was found which is essentially the same as for silicon of equivalent thickness. Measurements with a commercial CdTe detector confirmed the results of the calculations, although comparison of measured and calculated results indicated that the detector was not as thick as its specified 0.25 mm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this contract was to conduct research leading to the development of a real-time, hand-held, integrating dosimeter for the measurement of ionizing radiation doses to the crews of high-altitude aircraft and space flights. The specific method chosen was the use of a cadmium telluride detector with appropriate circuitry and computer processing to determine the total energy deposited in the detector. The raw spectra from energy deposited in the detector, and the rate of energy disposition. These unmodified results were found to have a strong dose rate dependence above about 1 rad/hr. This dependence was removed through the use of an empirically determined correction based on the dead time of the MCA during spectrum acquisition. With this correction applied to all data the system response was highly linear with respect to dose rate and total dose and showed no energy dependence over the range of gamma ray energies from 186 keV to 1250 deV. The results support the feasibility of the method and suggest that further development would lead to a real-time electronic dosimeter capable of approximately tissue-equivalent response to a wide range of radiation types in mixed fields.

Download or read book Health Physics and Radiological Health written by Thomas E. Johnson and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 1289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is an invaluable, comprehensive data reference for anyone involved in health physics or radiation safety. This new edition addresses the specific data requirements of health physicists, with data presented in large tables, including the latest NCRP recommendations, which are tabulated and given in both SI and traditional units for ease of use. Although portions of these data can be obtained from various internet sites, many are obscure, difficult to navigate and/or have conflicting information for even the most common data, such as specific gamma ray constants. This new edition compiles all essential data in this vast field into one user-friendly, authoritative source. It also offers a website with full-text search capability. Markets include radiation safety, medical physics and nuclear medicine

Download or read book Use of a Cadmium Telluride Detector in a New Tiny Personal Radiation Chirper written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By use of a CdTe crystal coupled to newly designed, low power electronics, we have developed a new personal radiation chirper that is superior to existing instruments. The device emits audible chirps or beeps at a rate proportional to the photon radiation exposure to the wearer. The device is small (6.2 cm high by 3.2 cm wide by 1.7 cm thick) and of low mass (50 grams) and is made to be clipped to the shirt collar of the wearer. The instrument has long continuous-use battery life and is sensitive over a large photon energy and exposure rate span.

Book Synopsis Low-cost Cadmium Zinc Telluride Radiation Detectors Based on Electron-transport-only Designs by :
Download or read book Low-cost Cadmium Zinc Telluride Radiation Detectors Based on Electron-transport-only Designs written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project was to utilize a novel device design to build a compact, high resolution, room temperature operated semiconductor gamma ray sensor. This sensor was constructed from a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) crystal. It was able to both detect total radiation intensity and perform spectroscopy on the detected radiation. CZT detectors produced today have excellent electron charge carrier collection, but suffer from poor hole collection. For conventional gamma-ray spectrometers, both the electrons and holes must be collected with high efficiency to preserve energy resolution. The requirement to collect the hole carriers, which have relatively low lifetimes, limits the efficiency and performance of existing experimental devices. By implementing novel device designs such that the devices rely only on the electron signal for energy information, the sensitivity of the sensors for detecting radiation can be increased substantially. In this report the authors describe a project to develop a new type of electron-only CZT detector. They report on their successful efforts to design, implement and test these new radiation detectors. In addition to the design and construction of the sensors the authors also report, in considerable detail, on the electrical characteristics of the CZT crystals used to make their detectors.
