Se destaca el hecho de que del proceso de refinación de petróleo no solo se obtienen los combustibles, sino muchas materias primas para producir lubricantes, plásticos, textiles, pinturas, llantas, sustancias agroquímicas y una gran variedad de productos que han hecho la vida más cómoda. También el gas natural, otro de los hidrocarburos que se encuentra en yacimientos de manera libre o asociado al petróleo, además del uso doméstico e industrial, es la fuente fundamental para la petroquímica, y se considera que será el combustible para la transición energética. El autor, desde una perspectiva analítica y crítica, ilustra la cadena productiva de los hidrocarburos, detalla los procesos de exploración, producción, tratamiento, transporte, análisis de reservas mundiales y en Colombia, y la transformación en productos útiles para el hombre y lo que representan en un mundo con incremento de la población que demanda mayor energía y que, junto con los demás recursos energéticos renovables y no renovables, harán parte de esa matriz energética para cubrir estas necesidades. También aborda las fuentes de energías renovables o energías alternativas, que indiscutiblemente se requiere desarrollar para gradualmente ir cubriendo los recursos no renovables; como los hidrocarburos, que cada vez serán más escasos y valiosos, y que se deben utilizar específicamente para cumplir una función muy especial como es la producción y la transformación de materias primas sintéticas muy difíciles de substituir por otros materiales. Este texto es ideal para los interesados en la energía sostenible y en comprender mejor el papel de los hidrocarburos en la matriz energética actual y futura para lograr una transición energética equitativa, confiable y segura.
