Book excerpt: "Sex, Race, and God is the impassioned manifesto of a white feminist's reckoning with the meaning of race-including her own whiteness-in doing theology. We should be discussing, and acting on many of Thistlethwaite's insights for quite some time. She has made a vital contribution to the feminist theological enterprise and to the critical relationship between back and white women in it." -Carter Heyward "Sex, Race, and God is a sincere attempt to listen to and learn from African-American women. . . a serious and largely successful effort to create a method that addresses differences rather than proposing wishful commonalities. Many women of color will find it promising a basis for dialogue." -The Women's Review of Books "This pivotal book illuminates a significant ongoing debate at the intersection of two fields: contemporary theology and feminist studies." -Choice "Thistlethwaite does what so few white feminists have done: genuinely interact with (and learn from) the strong differences in experience and perspective between African -American women and European-American women." -The Other Side
Book Synopsis Motherhood Reconceived by : Lauri Umansky
Download or read book Motherhood Reconceived written by Lauri Umansky and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1996-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early days of second-wave feminism, motherhood and the quest for women's liberation have been inextricably linked. And yet motherhood has at times been viewed, by anti-feminists and select feminists alike, as somehow at odds with feminism. In reality, feminists have long treated motherhood as an organizing metaphor for women's needs and advancement. The mother has been regarded with suspicion at times, deified at others, but never ignored. The first book devoted to this complex relationship, Motherhood Reconceived examines in depth how the realities of motherhood have influenced feminist thought. Bringing to life the work of a variety of feminist writers and theorists, among them Jane Alpert, Mary Daly, Susan Griffin, Adrienne Rich, and Dorothy Dinnerstein, Umansky situates feminist discourses of motherhood within the social and political contexts of the 1960s. Charting an increasingly favorable view of motherhood among feminists from the late 1960s through the 1980s, Umansky reveals how African American feminists sought to redefine black nationalist discourses of motherhood, a reworking subsequently adopted by white radical and socialist feminists seeking to broaden the racial base of their movement. Noting the cultural left's conflicted relationship to feminism, that is, the concurrent demand for individual sexual liberation and the desire for community, Umansky traces that legacy through various stages of feminist concern about motherhood: early critiques of the nuclear family, tempered by strong support for day care; an endorsement of natural childbirth by the women's health movement of the early 1970s; white feminists' attempt to forge a multiracial movement by declaring motherhood a universal bond; and the emergence of psychoanalytic feminism, ecofeminism, spiritual feminism, and the feminist anti- pornography movement.

Book Synopsis The Instructor by : Beverly Blackman
Download or read book The Instructor written by Beverly Blackman and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-08 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a breakdown in trust between two planets, Earth and Xeracik (pronounced Zeracik). What can be done to mend the rift? The friendly alliance between the two planets has been threatened. Will starting an Earth school classroom on Xeracik be a way to fix the problem? What if a first day of school means interacting with aliens? What if the ability of the aliens is much higher and much more intelligent than the ability of the Earth students? How the citizens of the two planets try to understand each other is important and well meaning. Can ETs change into Earth life-forms? Can they invade human dreams? What happens when you touch a Xeracikean? What if the aliens are trying to learn more about Earth so Earth can be their new home? Xeracik has become very unstable. The surface of this planet has become worse than any earthquake or active volcano on Earth, so the normally peaceful Xeracik may think they have a reason to become aggressive. Besides, Earth is a lower form of intelligence, so maybe they feel justified to take over the Earth and make it their new home. How would you feel if the future of our planet was dependent upon how you get along with your alien friend? Sometimes, we just have to trust that things will work out. Sometimes, we have to trust what we don’t understand. Sometimes, we just dig in and do the best we can.

Download or read book Screen Enemies of the American Way written by Fraser A. Sherman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American films, like America itself, have long been fascinated by the threat of outsiders posing as citizens to destroy the American way of life. This book tracks real-world fears appearing in the movies--Nazi agents, Japanese-American spies, Communist Party subversives, Islamic sleeper cells--as well as the science-fiction threats that play to the same fears, such as alien body-snatchers and android doppelgangers. The work also examines fears inspired by World War I German spies, the Japanese-American internment and the McCarthyite witch-hunts and shows how these issues, and others, played out on screen.
