Download or read book The Genetic Diversity of Cacao and Its Utilization written by B. G. D. Bartley and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cacao (Theobroma cacao) plant is an important Neo-Tropical species whose natural habitat is the Amazon basin. Over the last 30 years there has been a considerable geographical expansion in the availability of cacao genetic resources. As a result the plant has a rich genetic diversity that exists at two levels: that of the primitive populations in the area of original distribution of the species, and that of the derived cultivated populations. This book provides a comprehensive review of our current knowledge of the diversity of the species. It starts by examining the diversity and inheritance of the characteristics of primitive populations in the Amazonian and Caribbean regions. It then looks at the evolution of diversity within cultivated populations first in South America and around the Caribbean, and then beyond the Americas. The book describes the inter-relationships between populations based on morphological and molecular markers. It also examines the conservation of genetic resources and how these genetic resources can be utilized to produce new cultivars.

Alphonse DeBoy and his three grandchildren--Aurlie, Josette, and Luc--have been supplying food to their American visitor, Maj. Mark Dornier, for close to a year from their farm just outside Les Petites Islettes east of Verdun. Dornier parachuted into the Fort Domaniale de Lachalade in October 1943, and he's been living at a World War I French artillery camp. He's waiting for a second British officer, Lt. Alex Ryder, to join him. Ryder is in love with a secretary, Polly Berson, who is really a captain in the SOE. She also happens to be the cousin of Aurlie, Josette and Luc. To complicate things further, Josette and Aurlie develop feelings for Dornier. As Dornier gathers information on German defensive positions, the Nazis have developed several weapons to slow down the Allies when they invade, leaving it to the SOE and its operatives to gather intelligence on the weapons.

Download or read book Chocolate Nations written by Órla Ryan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chocolate - the very word conjures up a hint of the forbidden and a taste of the decadent. Yet the story behind the chocolate bar is rarely one of luxury. From the thousands of children who work on plantations to the smallholders who harvest the beans, Chocolate Nations reveals the hard economic realities of our favourite sweet. This vivid and gripping exploration of the reasons behind farmer poverty includes the human stories of the producers and traders at the heart of the West African industry. Orla Ryan shows that only a tiny fraction of the cash we pay for a chocolate bar actually makes it back to the farmers, and sheds light on what Fair Trade really means on the ground. Provocative and eye-opening, Chocolate Nations exposes the true story of how the treat we love makes it on to our supermarket shelves.
