Download or read book Yanks in the Redwoods written by Frank H. Baumgardner and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yanks in the Redwoods tells the story of the exploration and settlement of the Northwest, focusing on a one-hundred-mile region of the Mendocino Coast, 70 miles north of San Francisco. Covering the period of 18001900, the book presents several never-before-published accounts by participants. The founders of the Humboldt Bay Community are seen through the eyes of George Gibbs, Customs Collector, Astoria, OR. A unique look at the Oregon Trail, derived from the notes jotted down by Jesse Applegate and Stanley and Clarissa Taylor, debunks the Hollywood image of the hostile Indian. Sparely-written diary entries convey the pungent flavors and kernels of wisdom squeezed out of a life of hard work in a family timber business and the almost speechless surprise when corporations quickly moved in and muscled the founders out of their own enterprises. The book contains personal accounts by John Work, leader of the Hudson Bay Co. Expedition to the North Coast, and by Jerome and Emily Ford, founders of the Mendocino Lumber Co., and the fraud investigation of Thomas J. Henley. It tells of the founding of Mendocino and Ft. Bragg, the experiences of the Chinese community, the role of "Dog Hole" schooners, and the opium trade. The book concludes with excerpts from the diary of Etta Stephens Pullen, a pioneer who relocated from Maine to Little River, California, and the transcript of an interview with Lucy Young, a Wailaki-Lassik Indian telling the grim story of genocide that was going on coincidental with events in Etta Pullen's diary. Never before has this coastal segment of Northern California been studied in a comprehensive historical book. All of the earliest participant groups, Indians, Yankees and immigrants from the Midwestern and Southern states, northern European immigrants and Chinese, are presented. Wherever possible excerpts from primary sources, written by the people who made this history, are directly quoted. This work will become an example for other Northwest coastal regions to tell their own stories for later generations to enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fully-revised second edition of the bestselling textbook—an original interpretation of the entire span of California history The rich history of California can best be told through its connection with the Pacific Basin. From the geological origins of the land and its earliest seafaring inhabitants, to current economic trade relationships and remarkably diverse cultural influences, the factors that continue to shape the Golden State are inseparably linked to the vast ocean to its west. Pacific Eldorado is a comprehensive exploration of the entire sweep of California’s past in relation to the maritime world of the Pacific Basin. Offering a bold and original interpretation of the history of the region, prominent historian Thomas J. Osborne enables readers to view the state’s development through a Pacific-focused lens. Now in its second edition, this acclaimed textbook reflects new scholarship, places greater emphasis on environmental topics, and examines recent California history. Designed to help students think critically about commonly-held ideas, the author challenges conventional views, such as those of pre-Gold Rush California, confronts the traditional Atlantic-centric approach to American history, and presents a new analytic framework for studying the state’s past. The text enables students to understand the evolution of California, from the time of prehistoric Asian seafarers to the state’s present-day position as the nation’s wealthiest and most populous state. Rigorous yet accessible, this text: Explores a “Greater California” history that extends beyond geographic borders Offers new, expanded, and revised coverage of plate tectonics, the citriculture boom of the late 1800s, the environmental history of California, and more Features “Pacific Profiles,” brief chronicles of notable figures who have made an impact on the state’s history Has a new feature, “Transpacific Connections” that illustrates further the fascinating ties between California and the Pacific World; for example, comparing the California gold rush to the contemporaneous New Zealand gold rush and indicating the connections between the two Supports a Pacific-centric approach with compelling examples, such as the building of the transcontinental railroad to increase the China trade Includes new and updated photographs, illustrations, maps, references, and reading suggestions Already adopted by a wide range of institutions, the new edition of Pacific Eldorado: A History of Greater California continues to be an essential resource for students and instructors in California history courses, as well as those required to pass exams on California history and government to obtain California teaching credentials.

Book Synopsis City of Wood by : James Michael Buckley
Download or read book City of Wood written by James Michael Buckley and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2024-11-19 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How San Franciscans exploited natural resources such as redwood lumber to produce the first major metropolis of the American West. California’s 1849 gold rush triggered creation of the “instant city” of San Francisco as a base to exploit the rich natural resources of the American West. City of Wood examines how capitalists and workers logged the state’s vast redwood forests to create the financial capital and construction materials needed to build the regional metropolis of San Francisco. Architectural historian James Michael Buckley investigates the remote forest and its urban core as two poles of a regional “city.” This city consisted of a far-reaching network of spaces, produced as company owners and workers arrayed men and machines to extract resources and create human commodities from the region’s rich natural environment. Combining labor, urban, industrial, and social history, City of Wood employs a variety of sources—including contemporary newspaper articles, novels, and photographs—to explore the architectural landscape of lumber, from backwoods logging camps and company towns in the woods to busy lumber docks and the homes of workers and owners in San Francisco. By imagining the redwood lumber industry as a single community spread across multiple sites—a “City of Wood”—Buckley demonstrates how capitalist resource extraction links different places along the production value chain. The result is a paradigm shift in architectural history that focuses not just on the evolution of individual building design across time, but also on economic connections that link the center and periphery across space.
