Book excerpt: From a New York Times bestselling author and Caldecott-honor winning artist comes an exuberant illustrated story about playing dress up, having fun, and feeling free. The boy loves to be naked. He romps around his house naked and wild and free. Until he romps into his parents' closet and is inspired to get dressed. First he tries on his dad's clothes, but they don't fit well. Then he tries on his mom's clothes, and wow! The boy looks great. He looks through his mom's jewelry and makeup and tries that on, too. When he's discovered by his mother and father, the whole family (including the dog!) get in on the fun, and they all get dressed together. This charming and humorous story was inspired by bestselling and award-winning author Peter Brown's own childhood, and highlights nontraditional gender roles and self-expression.

Book excerpt: In honor of the one hundredth anniversary of George H. W. Bush’s birth, this visually stunning chronicle features never-before-published photos and memories celebrating the forty-first president’s vision of leadership as service to country—curated by Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer Jon Meacham. Lavishly illustrated, The Call to Serve is an intimate, illuminating portrait of the forty-first president, a man who was so much more than just his politics. In words and images—many found in a lifetime of scrapbooks kept by Barbara Pierce Bush—Jon Meacham brings George H. W. Bush vividly to life. From the values of integrity, empathy, and grace that Bush learned in childhood to his leadership at the highest levels in tumultuous times, the forty-first president embodied an ideal of service that warrants attention in our own divided time. Bush pursued a life of service to America through his heroic combat experience in the Pacific during World War II, his political rise in Texas, his serving as U.S. ambassador to the UN, his time as envoy to China and as director of the CIA, his tenure as Ronald Reagan’s vice president, and his election as the forty-first president of the United States. Set against the background of America during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this book commemorates the legacy of a man who was far from perfect—he could be cutthroat on the campaign trail—but whose ambition was not an end unto itself. Bush’s drive to succeed was, rather, a means to put the values of balance, patriotism, and respect for others into action in the political arena. Toward the end of Bush’s life, the forty-fourth president, Barack Obama, said that Bush put the country first “both before he was president, while he was president, and ever since.” Featuring more than 450 photographs, Meacham’s introduction and commentary throughout, and narration drawn from his biography of George H. W. Bush, Destiny and Power, this is an essential tribute to a uniquely American life.

Book excerpt: My initial interest in the Yates lineage and Fred C. Yates specifically, began at an early age when my mother, Edith Jane (Yates) Riffe, introduced me to the shoebox. I have always thought of it as a shoebox, because it is about that size, but it is actually more of an all purpose box. Mother kept her most prized possessions in it, letters from her father, Fred C. Yates, and a handful of notebooks and documents that had been passed down from him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive introduction to Results Mapping, an in novative approach for assessing the worth of hard-to-evaluate social, health, and education programs. Results Mapping represents a true milestone in program evaluation-a milestone both as methodology for program accountability and as a technique for program improvement. It is relevant across a wide spectrum of pub lic health, social service, and systems-building initiatives. It introduces "new sci ence" into the field of program evaluation. It merges common sense with structured logic. It retains the richness of real world success stories without sacri ficing a hard-nosed focus on quantitative data and measurable outcomes. The contents of this book are directly pertinent for program leadership and staff, for sponsors and funders in the public and private sectors, and for those charged with assessing, documenting and analyzing the effects of program activ ity. Success Stories as Hard Data is designed to be readable, practical, and clear. Its author does not ignore previous scholarly work, but chooses to emphasize real world applications. For this Dr. Kibei is to be applauded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gainsborough’s Fred Spiksley was one of the first working class youngsters in 1887 to live ‘the dream’ of becoming a professional footballer, before later finding a role as a globe-trotting coach. He thus dodged the inevitability of industrial, poorly paid, dangerous labour. Lightning fast, Spiksley created and scored hundreds of goals including, to the great joy of the future Queen Mary who chased him down the touchline, three against Scotland in 1893. The outside left scored both Sheffield Wednesday’s goals in the 2-1 defeat of Wolves in the 1896 FA Cup Final at the Crystal palace. Forced by injury to stop playing at aged 36, Spiksley adventured out into the world. He acted with Charlie Chaplin, escaped from a German prison at the start of the First World War and later made the first ‘talking’ football training film for youngsters. As a coach/manager he won titles in Sweden, Mexico, the USA and Germany, becoming the last Englishman to coach a German title-winning team with 1FC Nuremburg in 1927. He coached in Barcelona in 1932 and it was only after his involvement had exceeded 50 years, during which time, as this book explains, the game changed dramatically, did Spiksley’s football career end. As an addicted gambler and womaniser, Spiksley had his problems away from football. However, he was beloved by his football fans, including Herbert Chapman, the greatest manager of that era in English football who, towards the end of his life, picked him in his finest XI.

They lived at a time when they were called upon to build a city and a history-making dam, to grow a fledgling spit of a town in the desert into what would become the world-famous Las Vegas. They were rugged individuals on a desert frontier living ordinary lives during an exceptional time in our history and rose to the occasion. They survived Prohibition, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and made wartime sacrifices. Along the way and by chance, they bumped into a number of famous personalities.
