Book excerpt: Excerpt from Byron His Poetry This is to some extent recognised by writers of histories and text-books of literature, and by editors of selections from the works of our poets for place is always given by them to a certain amount of biographical material. But in the histories and text-books the biography of a given writer stands by itself, and his work has to be sought elsewhere, the student being left to make the connexion for himself while even in our current editions of selections there is little systematic attempt to link biography, step by step, with production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Poems of Lord Byron Byron was violently blamed in England, not only for his treat ment of his wife, but for general dissolute conduct and for the audacity of his sentiments. Such was the revulsion Of public feeling, so vehement was the outcry against him, that, as he after wards wrote, he felt that if what was said were true he was unfit for England if false, England was unfit for him. Under the cir cums auces his pride dictated but one course: on the 25th of April. 1816, he quitted England, never to return. Only four years of his mature life had been passed in his native land. He was but twenty-eight years old when he set out on his second and final visit to southern Europe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection From the Works of Lord Byron Byron with foolish faces of praise. It is of little moment to him or to us that they have long since ceased to cackle and begun to hiss. They have become used to better verse and carefuller workmen and must be forgiven if after such training they cannot at once appreciate the splendid and im perishable excellence which covers all his offences and outweighs all his defects: the excellence of sincerity and strength. Without these no poet can live; but few have ever had so much of them as Byron. His sincerity indeed is difficult to discover and define; but it does in effect lie at the root of all his good works: deformed by pretension and defaced by as sumption, masked by folly and veiled by affectation but perceptible after all, and priceless. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Lord Byron: With Memoir and Notes George gordon lord byron was descended of a very ancient and illustrious family. The celebrated Commodore Byron, an account of whose shipwrecks once delighted so much the readers of adventures, was his grandfather. His father was Captain Byron, an extravagant and licentious man, who, after squander ing his own fortune, married Miss Gordon Of Gight, in Aberdeen shire, and got with her not only the property to which she was heiress, but a considerable sum of money, all of which he soon spent. The poet was born in London on the 22d of January, 1788, two years after which his mother, in consequence of the death of her husband, left England, and took up her residence at Aberdeen-a place suited to her now scanty resources, which were not supplemented by her husband's uncle, the then Lord Byron, a retired and gloomy man, of an ungenerous spirit. For eight years the poet resided with his mother; and here began that treatment which, acting on a generous but irritable mind, laid the foundation of a character marked by so many virtues, and so many offences against good taste and public morals. His mother, whose life had been soured by the extrava gant conduct of her husband, acted towards the boy - who was not only of a weak bodily habit, but deformed in one, if not both, of his feet - as if she had predetermined to make his moral nature of that anomalous character it afterwards exhibited, the means she employed being indulgence, not always deserved, and severity, as seldom merited. These cherished his natural hasti ness Of temper, as well as pampered his proud wilfulness, until the one hastened to irascibility, and the other to a selfish defiance of every one about him. All the good tendencies of his fine nature were thus weakened and misdirected, and all the bad ones were aggravated and deepened. To this was added a constant change of teachers, as well as methods of teaching, without ref erence to the abilities or inclinations of the boy, and the couse quence resulted in an almost absolute indifference to all studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Lord Byron: Miscellaneous Poems It may not be amiss to glance for a moment from Byron's massive individualism to what we may perhaps call the altruism of that literary pheno menon, Walt Whitman; whom we cannot help regarding as the John the Baptist of a new revelation. He undoubtedly is the first authentic voice of Democracy made audible in literature. For as to Byron and Shelley, it needs only to look at the delicate beauty of their lineaments, to under stand that, with the high-bred instincts of an old race in their veins, their aspirations could not fail to be after a Republic moulded on the Greek model, or shaped in accordance with a somewhat exclusive ideal. Walt Whitman, on the contrary, coming himself of rough work-a-day folk, feels the actual pulse of the people, and in their hearing, adapted to the needs of their hard, ugly, toilsome lives, he utters a thrilling word - the Shibboleth of the future - m 77161356. In this new conception of life we notice an affinity to the great music-dramas of Wagner, inasmuch as the predominance of melody, or the manifestation of individual ex pression, is subordinated to, although not absorbed in, the vast symphonic harmonies of the co Operating whole. This abiding consciousness of being simply an organic particle of the living body of the people - this recognition of the social bond.
