Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the implementation of privacy by design in Europe, a principle that has been codified within the European Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). While privacy by design inspires hope for future privacy-sensitive designs, it also introduces the need for a common understanding of the legal and technical concepts of privacy and data protection. By pursuing an interdisciplinary approach and comparing the problem definitions and objectives of both disciplines, this book bridges the gap between the legal and technical fields in order to enhance the regulatory and academic discourse. The research presented reveals the scope of legal principles and technical tools for privacy protection, and shows that the concept of privacy by design goes beyond the principle of the GDPR. The book presents an analysis of how current regulations delegate the implementation of technical privacy and data protection measures to developers and describes how policy design must evolve in order to implement privacy by design and default principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is great hope. The weight of childhood is heavy in America today. "Burned out" is not supposed to describe children. But it does. A growing list of performance requirements now comes accessorized with a longer list of labels and disorders for children who struggle to measure up. Required to earn (stickers, grades, a place in a good reading group or on the best team...) many children are confused about their identity and their purpose. Even more confusing is the lack of fulfillment children experience even when they get everything right and earn all the prizes. Is this it? This performing and earning cycle feels like bondage, not freedom. In front of a screen feels like a safe place to hide. Where is the hope? Childhood isn't a season of measuring up. It's a season of growing up. Education by Design, Not Default: How Brave Love Creates Fearless Learning is a bold declaration of the transformational power of experiencing love in childhood. More than a romantic dream or a heart emoji included in a text, love is the fuel of maturity. Love sees us when we struggle-and love helps. Children need help, by design. For generations who have experienced education as performing and testing, Education by Design, Not Default offers to recalculate the route we're offering to our children at school and at home. We can provide children an honest and love-based childhood-and offer the world more than perpetual adolescents. Love can launch trustworthy adults. Janet Newberry is an educational consultant committed to repurposing education. She is also a writer, speaker, and a self-proclaimed love researcher. Janet and her husband Doug travel America in an Airstream named Freedom, helping families have real conversations without shame, so children can ask for help in relationships of trust. The activity of applied mathematics is thus intimately connected with research in pure mathematics, which is also referred to as theoretical mathematics. Theoretical and Applied Mathematics in International Business is an essential research publication that explores the importance and implications of applied and theoretical mathematics within international business, including areas such as finance, general management, sales and marketing, and supply chain management. Highlighting topics such as data mining, global economics, and general management, this publication is ideal for scholars, specialists, managers, corporate professionals, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: Philippe Beneton, a prominent French religious conservative, has long meditated on Tocqueville, and Equality by Default is Tocquevillian in that it does not offer a partisan polemic, but rather paints a picture of contemporary life-a picture that is also a guide for discernment for those who have a difficult time "seeing" contemporary liberalism for what it is. Artfully translated by Ralph Hancock, Equality by Default offers a unique and strikingly insightful account of the late-modern mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for those who are interested in a fonnalization of human reasoning, especially in order to build "intelligent" computer systems. Thus, it is mainly designed for the Artificial Intelligence community, both students and researchers, although it can be useful for people working in related fields like cognitive psychology. The major theme is not Artificial Intelligence applications, although these are discussed throughout in sketch fonn. Rather, the book places a heavy emphasis on the fonnal development of default logic, results and problems. Default logic provides a fonnalism for an important part of human reasoning. Default logic is specifically concerned with common sense reasoning, which has recently been recognized in the Artificial Intelligence literature to be of fundamental importance for knowledge representation. Previously, fonnalized reasoning systems failed in real world environments, though succeeding with an acceptable ratio in well-defined environments. This situation enabled empirical explorations and the design of systems without theoretical justification. In particular, they could not be compared since there was no basis to judge their respective merits. Default logic turned out to be very fruitful by proving the correctness of some of them. We hope that this book will initiate other successful developments in default logic.

Book excerpt: Why attractive things work better and other crucial insights into human-centered design Emotions are inseparable from how we humans think, choose, and act. In Emotional Design, cognitive scientist Don Norman shows how the principles of human psychology apply to the invention and design of new technologies and products. In The Design of Everyday Things, Norman made the definitive case for human-centered design, showing that good design demanded that the user's must take precedence over a designer's aesthetic if anything, from light switches to airplanes, was going to work as the user needed. In this book, he takes his thinking several steps farther, showing that successful design must incorporate not just what users need, but must address our minds by attending to our visceral reactions, to our behavioral choices, and to the stories we want the things in our lives to tell others about ourselves. Good human-centered design isn't just about making effective tools that are straightforward to use; it's about making affective tools that mesh well with our emotions and help us express our identities and support our social lives. From roller coasters to robots, sports cars to smart phones, attractive things work better. Whether designer or consumer, user or inventor, this book is the definitive guide to making Norman's insights work for you.
