Nelson and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2009-12-10 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hume's 'New Scene of Thought,' is a defense of Hume's philosophical principles in the Treatise of Human Nature. Nelson shows that Hume's new philosophy was a uniquely original and profound work, a masterpiece in philosophical literature, and a work worthy of serious study and acceptance. Expounding on the meaning that Hume gives to his new science of man founded on an empirical foundation, it is shown that all the sciences were, in effect, nothing more than branches of 'introspective psychology.' The thesis of The Several faces of David Hume in The Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is that Dialogues is a reflective philosophical autobiography of Hume himself. Every character represents Hume at some stage in his life: Pamphilus is Hume at fifteen, and Philo is Hume in his adult philosophical maturity. Cleanthes is Bishop Butler but also Hume, when Hume was under the sway of Butler's writings as a young man. Demea represents the orthodox religious views that Hume was raised on, which Hume rejected by his eighteenth year.

Contrary to this view, however, this book argues that it is irreligious aims and objectives that are fundamental to the Treatise and account for its underlying unity and coherence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human Nature, and Other Sermons" is a sermon collection by Joseph Butler, an 18th-century English theologian and philosopher. The book is an excellent collection of Butler's moral and theological insights, addressing significant issues of human nature, ethics, and religious thought. Butler digs into the moral and ethical components of human existence in this work, that examines the intricacies of human nature. He argues that people have an innate moral awareness that guides them toward virtue and ethical decision-making. Butler's sermons examine the idea of conscience, its role in impacting how people act, and its compatibility with Christian ideals. The sermons in this collection also address bigger theological issues, such as divine providence, the essence of God, and the compatibility of reason and faith. Butler's literature displays his belief in the compatibility of human reason and religious belief, pushing for a rational and considered approach to religious problems. The intellectual depth and moral clarity of "Human Nature, and Other Sermons" are lauded. Butler's work influenced moral philosophy and Christian theology, and it is still studied and praised for its ongoing relevance in questions of ethics, human nature, and the link between reason and faith.

Book excerpt: "The picture of Hume clinging timidly to a raft of custom and artifice, because, poor skeptic, he has no alternative, is wrong," writes John Stewart. "Hume was confident that by experience and reflection philosophers can achieve true principles." In this revisionary work Stewart surveys all of David Hume's major writings to reveal him as a liberal moral and political philosopher. Against the background of seventeenth-and eighteenth-century history and thought, Hume emerges as a proponent not of conservatism but of reform. Stewart first presents the dilemma over morals in the modern natural-law school, then examines the new approach to moral and political philosophy adopted by Hume's precursors Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Hutcheson, and Butler. Illuminating Hume's explanation of the standards and rules that should govern private and public life, the author challenges interpretations of Hume's philosophy as conservative by demonstrating that he did not dismiss reason as a key factor determining right and wrong in moral and political contexts. Stewart goes on to show that Hume viewed private property, the market, contracts, and the rule of law as essential to genuine civilized society, and explores Hume's criticism of contemporary British beliefs concerning government, religion, commerce, international relations, and social structure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hume's Philosophy of Religion brings together for the first time the whole range of Hume's immensely important critique of religion. The major concern is with a clear discussion and presentation of philosophical issues wherever they occur in Hume's writings, but items in the history of ideas, questions of interpretation and biographical details are introduced when they contribute to an understanding of Hume's position. Already reviewed as a standard work on Hume on religion and as a good general introduction to Hume's thought, this new edition has been extensively revised and extended. '...it is hard to imagine how a study of Hume on religion could have been at once more comprehensive, accurate, readable and scholarly than this...it is strongly to be recommended to all who have occasion to study or to teach Hume in colleges or universities.' W.D.Hudson, Expository Times.

Book excerpt: Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is a philosophical work written by the Scottish philosopher David Hume. Through dialogue, three fictional characters named Demea, Philo, and Cleanthes debate the nature of God's existence. While all three agree that a god exists, they differ sharply in opinion on God's nature or attributes and how, or if, humankind can come to knowledge of a deity. In the Dialogues, Hume's characters debate a number of arguments for the existence of God, and arguments whose proponents believe through which we may come to know the nature of God. Such topics debated include the argument from design - for which Hume uses a house - and whether there is more suffering or good in the world (Argument from evil)
