It was a time when chores were plentiful and toys were simple; when bad attitudes weren't treated with a prescription—you just beat the kid good. Video games and shopping malls didn't exist, and hands got dirty in backyards and vacant lots. Such was the life of Stevie, a boy addicted to play. Whether being burned at the stake as a cowboy or escaping a Nazi POW camp, Stevie's life is one adventure after another—often comical, but always filled with spiritual consequence. Or at least that's the way his guardian, Uncle Harry, sees it. Whether facing the 'green mile' to pick out his own switch, being consigned to dreaded 'miscellaneous chores,' or obediently struggling to follow the complexities of how questioning the intelligence (or lack there of) of cats relates to the reality of God, Stevie knows he can always rely on Uncle Harry to provide answers—whether he can understand them or not—and look after his immortal soul. Capturing the waywardness of youth, and all the hilarity inherent in young boys and their crackbrained schemes, author Stephen Langdon's stories will keep you reading till the streetlights come on.

There is a very large old Plantation home in the middle of the retreat that has a wonderful balcony overlooking the entire property. A babbling river runs right through the middle of the land and empties into a sparkling pond. Rolling hills of flowers and open fields of hay are all surrounded by a forest of trees. Bentley Bennigan the beekeeper, lives in the big house and sits on his balcony watching over all his treasured creatures. Three red barns are placed around the retreat and the largest one sits on top of the highest hill with a special beehive of honey bees. There are twenty-six bees in this hive that were chosen by the beekeeper because of their great attitudes. Each bee has been given a name by the beekeeper to match his or her special attitude. The bees all work together to help each other and their friends out. These bees are very busy using their gifts to prosper their hive but also work hard to pollinate their beautiful surroundings. As the bees go through their days, they encounter other creatures who struggle with certain issues so they try to help them learn a better way to do things.

In 1972, the players became the first in professional sports to go on strike. Four years later, contractual changes allowed those with six years in the majors to become free agents, leading to an unprecedented increase in salaries. Developments in the play of the game included new ballparks with faster fields and artificial turf, and the introduction of the designated hitter in 1973. Eminent personalities emerged from the dugout, including many African Americans and Latinos. Focusing on the stars who debuted from 1970 through 1979, this book covers the highs and lows of more than 1,300 players who gave fans the most exciting decade baseball has ever seen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book, Soul of the South, includes thirty short stories ranging from general fiction; military, everyday drama, to children’s stories some of which use animal characters. My premier story ‘The Pecan Tree’ is a fictionalized account of a soldier in General Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson’s army returning home from the Battle of New Orleans through west Tennessee in 1815. There has stood a huge pecan tree in Natchez Trace State Park for many years supposedly planted by a soldier of the returning army. It was reputed to be the largest and oldest pecan tree in America. Sadly, a few years ago one of our many tornadoes destroyed it. There is another story I read as a boy that stated a sixteen year old volunteer with the militia Jackson headed in his many Indian wars refused his sergeants order to pick up biscuit crumbs that he had thrown on the ground in front of his tent. Because of the soldier’s refusal Old Hickory had him shot for insubordination. Using these two events I have woven a story of a ghost that made his presence known at various times during the years following the army’s trek through the forest that became Henderson County, Tennessee. The story basically follows the Beacum family that settled the land where the boy was buried with a pecan in his pocket that grew into the large tree. The family settled there during the 1830’s and the last surviving member died in the 1930’s. The family farm is offered for back taxes and is purchased by a young teacher who has a wife and son. The ghost continues his visits and only after the teacher enlists in the army and survives a Japanese prison camp does the story come to an end when he returns home. There is a story of Billy the Kid who surfaces on a farm in west Tennessee when he is an old man and adds a fictional account of how his death and burial were staged by the man who, history says killed him; sheriff Pat Garrett. I try to include a moral in each of the children’s stories as well as making them interesting.
