Book excerpt: Dr Johnson disapproved of parentheses and wouldn't use them; and for three centuries grammarians have argued that they are subordinate, additional, unnecessary, irrelevant, and damaging to the clarity of argument. But for Marlowe, Marvell, Swift, Coleridge, Byron, Browning, Eliot, Geoffrey Hill, and Derek Walcott (to name only poets) parentheses have been emphatic, original, necessary, relevant, and essential to the clarity of argument. They also intensify satire. Dr Lennard offers both a new history of the poetic use of lunulae (the marks of parenthesis) from their first appearance in England in 1494 to the present day, and detailed case-studies of individual poets who exploited lunulae. In combination the historical development of use and the individual's practice in a given period reveal the impact on literary composition of technological, philosophical, and political pressures, and the importance for the reader of regarding punctuation as a resource.

Book excerpt: A collection of experiences and musings from Dr. James Tresner. Masonic education is fast becoming the watchword of all Masonic Grand Lodges, or those that are developing programs that appeal to those men coming to the Craft with an expectation of some degree of enlightenment. Too often, however, speakers and available material seems radically to one side of a coin or another. Wildly esoteric and delving into occult language that has little interest for many, or completely and utterly dry regurgitating the acceptable Masonic histories and litanies of old. This book strikes a perfect balance and has something for everyone in a tone and approach that feels a little like you have just met up with the character in real life from the old tyler talks. The tone of the book transports you to a wonderful little room, fireplace burning, Jim on his pipe, too wonderfully comfy chairs and great conversation. We can't let the conversational tone of the book fool us though. There are some real meaty topics handled within this almost 450 page volume. Everything from music to symbolism, from esotericism to morality, no topic seems off limits, but every topic is covered with the same widened and kind approach that is Dr. Jim Tresner.

For the better part of this century and the worst part of the last, Darrel Bristow-Bovey has been making enemies, allies and occasional friends with his newspaper and magazine columns. In that time he has received two death threats, five offers to sue, four national awards and a marriage proposal. Over a range of subjects, from television to sport to the difficulty of finding love in the modern world, never saying less than he thinks, never more than he feels, Darrel’s is an unmistakable and indispensable voice in the South African media. All the old favourites are in these pages: Jamie Oliver, Felicia, Wayne Ferreira, the lost art of conversation, Simunye presenters, Christmas stories, lesbians, and the infamous “The Day I Bought My Fridge”. Plus, as a special bonus, for the first time: The origin of Porky Withers and the true location of the Chalk ’n Cue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From honey experts C. Marina Marchese and Kim Flottum comes this comprehensive introduction to the origin, flavor, and culinary uses of more than 30 varietals of honey, from ubiquitous clover to tangy star thistle to rich, smoky buckwheat Like wine, cheese, coffee, and chocolate, honey has emerged as an artisanal obsession. Its popularity at farmers' markets and specialty food stores has soared as retailers are capitalizing on the trend. The Honey Connoisseur teaches consumers everything they need to know about how to taste, select, and use a diverse selection of honey. After a brief explanation of how bees produce honey, the authors introduce the concept of terroir, the notion that soil, weather, and other natural phenomena can affect the taste of honey. As with wines, knowing the terroir of a honey varietal helps to inform an understanding of its flavor. The book goes on to give a thorough course in the origins of more than 30 different honeys as well as step-by-step instructions, how to taste honey, describe its flavor and determine what other flavors pair best with a particular honey. Also included are simple recipes such as dressings, marinades, quick-and-easy desserts, and beverages. Beautifully illustrated and designed, The Honey Connoisseur is the perfect book for foodies and locavores alike. Praise for The Honey Connoisseur: "Of all the near-perfect food we generally take for granted, honey suffers more than most (except for cheese). The Honey Connoisseur lays it all out on the table; Marina Marchese and Kim Flottum tell the whole story including its dark side in an eloquent style. The reader will never look at the honey jar the same way." -- Max McCalman, author of Mastering Cheese, Cheese: Connoisseur's Guide to the World's Best, and The Cheese Platebr> "Eureka! This is the book I've been looking for. As a restaurateur who has traveled high and low in search of the world's finest wines, I have always respected the role terroir plays in creating and nurturing a region's culinary personality. Ever since I took up beekeeping, I've been on the hunt for the definitive guide to the essence of honey: how to taste it, which local factors influence its flavor, and most importantly for me, how to pair it with other ingredients like an expert." -- Julian Niccolini, Owner of The Four Seasons Restaurant, New York City "With the authors' depth of knowledge, I cannot think of a better resource on honey. This book makes me want to bake with all the varieties. Finally, a honey bible! The Honey Connoisseur is truly a great book." -- John Barricelli, author of The Seasonal Baker and The Sono Baking Company Cookbook "Marina Marchese and Kim Flottum's knowledge of this fascinating and increasingly popular subject is unparalleled. Together, they have composed the preeminent book about honey and its regional culinary food pairings." -- Nicholas Coleman, Chief Olive Oil Specialist, Eataly NYC

Book excerpt: INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER A critically acclaimed, intimate and no-holds-barred memoir by Canada’s top defence lawyer, Nothing But the Truth weaves Marie Henein’s personal story with her strongly held views on society’s most pressing issues. Marie Henein, arguably the most prominent lawyer in the country, has written a memoir that is at once raw, beautiful, and altogether unforgettable. Her story, as an immigrant from a tight-knit Egyptian-Lebanese family, demonstrates the value of strong role models—from her mother and grandmother, to her brilliant uncle Sami who died of AIDS. She learned the value of hard work, being true to herself and others, and unapologetically owning it all. Marie Henein shares here her unvarnished view on the ethical and practical implications of being a criminal lawyer, and how the job is misunderstood and even demonized. Ironically, her most successful cases made her a “lightning rod” in some circles, confirming her belief that much of the public’s understanding of democracy and the justice system is based on popular culture and social media, and decidedly not the rule of law. As she turns fifty and struggles with the corrosive effect becoming invisible has on women, Marie doubles down on being even more highly visible and opinionated as she deconstructs, among other things, the otherness of the immigrant experience (Where are you really from?), the pros and cons of being a household name in this country, opening her own boutique law firm, and the commoditization of women’s previously unpaid labour popularized by the likes of Martha Stewart. Nothing But the Truth is refreshingly unconstrained and surprising—an account by a woman at the top of her game in a male-dominated world.

Book excerpt: In medieval times, a pilgrimage gave the average Joe his only break from the daily grind. For Gideon Lewis-Kraus, it promises a different kind of escape. Determined to avoid the fear and self-sacrifice that kept his father, a gay rabbi, closeted until midlife, he has moved to anything-goes Berlin. But the surfeit of freedom there has begun to paralyze him, and when a friend extends a drunken invitation to join him on an ancient pilgrimage route across Spain, Lewis-Kraus packs his bag, grateful for the chance to wake each morning with a sense of direction. Irreverent, moving, hilarious, and thought-provoking, A Sense of Direction is Lewis-Kraus’s dazzling riff on the perpetual war between discipline and desire, and its attendant casualties. Across three pilgrimages and many hundreds of miles, he completes an idiosyncratic odyssey to the heart of a family mystery and a human dilemma: How do we come to terms with what has been and what is—and find a way forward, with purpose?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This simple little adventure tale was originally written as a juvenile novel in 1964 while I was a teacher in Lander, Wyoming. It didnt impress publishers, so I put it aside and later moved to Colorado and stored the manuscript in the attic and lost track of it. Decades passed, but I persistently thought of rewriting my book, not to sell, necessarily, but for my own gratification, and I pondered how it could be better. I found the manuscript in early 2007, read it one more time and immediately set to work. The result was a complete revision, a total re-write other than the title, the locale and the basic plot. Because I was no longer hampered by trying to satisfy an editor or agent, I developed a style which frequently matches the way I really think and talk. (Some people who know me are thinking, Yeah, right: disorganized, repetitive, foolish, irreverent, clich-ridden, etc., etc.) Anyway, I was satisfied with the result. If you can read through the whole thing without losing interest or throwing up, then I feel that I have achieved my goal of becoming a bona fide novelist.
