Book excerpt: This research project assesses the extent to which religion influences standards and behaviour in business, by comparing Islamic banking to co-operative banking as carried out by both Christians and Muslims. The study argues that Islamic banks are particular in the kind of products they offer, namely the Islamic financial instruments. On the other hand, it is the organisation which is key to co-operative banks. An empirical investigation of over 100 banks has revealed that Islamic banks are conventional banks with a product range modified according to Islamic religious law. Co-operative banks operate so as 'to help the poor', an objective in line with both Islamic and Christian ethics. The book demonstrates that Muslims and Christians can work together to foster development and to overcome poverty by referring to common ethical standards in business.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, , language: English, abstract: Nowadays many firms produce and sell worldwide and employ workers from different nations. How do differences in a country’s religion or ethical system influence their global business operations? How does culture affect them? Is outsourcing production to developing countries ethically defensible? The aim of this paper is to address these questions. Religion comprises shared beliefs, values, and rituals. Values are assumptions regarding what is good, right, or important. Ethical systems involve codes of conduct and values that externally form a group of people’s behaviour. Ethical systems are often based on religion and religion expresses ethical principles. Measured by percentage of world population in 2010, Christianity (31.4%) is the biggest religion, followed by Islam (23.2%). By 2050, however, the Islamic population will be approximately equivalent to the number of Christians. The following section describes how those two religions and their ethics impact on international business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business Ethics in the Middle East fills a crucial gap in the Middle East educational landscape. Written in an easy and accessible format, this book covers the foundations of business ethics by drawing from both Eastern and Western traditions. The chapters include many examples, case studies, activities, and illustrations that are customized to the Middle Eastern market, yet relevant to readers outside of the Middle East who want thorough insights about business behaviour in the region. A special module introduces the Arab Middle Eastern context that non-Arab readers will find valuable. The author addresses topics related to organizational culture, leadership, CSR, corporate governance, marketing, HR, accounting, finance, and production. This is accomplished with a deep attention to the cultural and contextual elements of the Middle East. Special attention is given to religious business ethics, while still deeply engaging the vast heritage of Western ethical systems. This combination is essential for the development of a comprehensive approach to the topic of business ethics. This textbook will be essential reading for students of business ethics in the Middle East and will also be valuable for students and researchers across business ethics, Islamic Studies, religion, and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world religion is an increasingly vital and pervasive force in both personal and public life. Though this trend has been widely noted, its long-term implications are as yet only dimly perceived. Will this be a force for healing or for violence? To express the question to its most dramatic, yet urgent form: can the world's major religious traditions respond constructively to contemporary challenges in the public sphere that are now, by definition, global? Religion and Ethics in a Globalizing World seeks to address this question, and to contribute to a greater understanding of the role of religion in the paradoxical context of a world that is increasingly unified, but which remains fundamentally plural.

Book excerpt: This volume is a unique collection of inspiring reflections designed to enhance the reader’s understanding of both the importance and the relativity of business ethics. It invites experts and specialists of business ethics to explore threads from history, religion, philosophy and biology, but will also appeal to the thoughtful citizen, academic, businessman, banker and lawyer who has chosen to critically reflect upon the value of ethical conduct in today’s world. The book draws from a rich mine of academic sources to consider how business ethics relate to today’s key concerns, including wealth inequality, the need for effective financial regulations and sustainability—how best to engage with our duties to planet earth. Nourished by the author’s life-long practice of international law and his exploration of academic thinking on ethics, this book is neither an analysis nor a sermon. It is an invitation to make the world a better place by engaging in ethical thought.

Book excerpt: There is a revival of interest by economists in ethical issues and beliefs, and by moral philosophers and theologians in economics. This book is intended to make a contribution to this cross-fertilisation of ideas. Rodney Wilson has undertaken an extensive survey of Jewish, Christian and Muslim views on economics, and reviewed the rapidly expanding business ethics literature from a religious perspective. The juxtaposition of the work of theologians and moral philosophers with that of economists results in some interesting comparisons.
