Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Cycles and the Depression of 1920-1 Another business cycle has about run its course. If one may hazard a guess based on previous experience and on a few current indices, we are somewhere near the middle of the busi ness depression which is liquidating the artificial boom of the war and the post-armistice period. As this is being written, in July, the between seasons month, normal midsummer dullness has aggravated the cyclical depression and the general tone of the business world has been not inaptly characterized as one of enthusiastic pessimism. Bad news is doubtless still i-n store for some trades; probably for business as a whole it may be next March before the worst is reached; and perhaps after that, recovery may be very gradual and halting. Yet funda mentally there is reason for confidence and courage. Indeed now almost for the first time, those who face facts squarely find solid ground for optimism. The gradual but substantial measure of liquidation already achieved, the increasing realiza tion of the necessity of a restored economic equilibrium on the part of groups like the building trades which had long resisted the inevitable, the settlement of some maior strikes and the avoidance of others, the improved transportation situation, the easing of money rates, the back-to-work move ment in most European countries, and the improved political situation lead one to believe that we are already near the bottom and that the rest of the descent need not be so danger ously rapid as to result in a crash. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Generating Economic Cycles Among the rare books in the library where I am writing there is a first edition of Galileo's treatise Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo, Tolemaico e Copernicano. This was the work that brought him before the Roman Inquisition. By the Holy Office he was convicted "of believing and holding the doctrines - false and contrary to the Holy and Divine Scriptures - that the Sun is the centre of the world, and that it does not move from east to west, and that the Earth does move and is not the centre of the world; also that an opinion can be held and supported as probable after it has been declared and decreed contrary to the Holy Scriptures," and he was required by the Holy Office to "abjure, curse, and detest the aforesaid errors." Intolerance of unwonted views was not limited to the Holy Office. Galileo himself could close the windows of his mind and vent his critical scorn upon an adventurous colleague. In the fourth chapter of his fatal book there is a discussion of the theory of terrestrial tides which was the occasion of Galileo's treating with disdain the suggestion of Kepler that the tides are dependent upon the attraction of the Moon. Knowing that history never fails to repeat itself and given the facts of the past, it is not necessary to possess the gift of prophecy to formulate an infallible rule, which if taken at the advance leads to success; and, if taken at the decline, leads to bankruptcy and ruin. The recurrent phases of economic activity - prosperity, crisis, depression, and revival - grow into and out of each other. They are here examined in terms of the characteristics and observed behavior of the economic system. Originally published in 1913, Mitchell's germinal and familiar work marked the beginning of a distinctly new approach to the analysis of business cycles. The present volume, which is Part III of the larger work, has since become the classic statement of a theory of their causes. One of the reasons for its durability is not far to seek: it was woven out of observed phenomena of the money economy, not spun out of airy postulates. Original contributions to economic theory outlast the individual and temporal variations which the annals of business and the tables of statistics show. This is such a contribution.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Cycles: Their Law and Cause There is a considerable unanimity of opinion among experts that, from the purely economic point of view, the most general and characteristic phenomenon of a changing society is the ebb and flow of economic life, the alternation of energetic, buoyant activity with a spiritless, depressed and uncertain drifting. During the creative period of the rhythmic change each factor in production receives an augmenting income, and the mutual adjustment of interests in the productive process is brought about in a natural way, primarily through the operation of competitive law. he period of decline in the cycle presents a sharply contrasted aspect of industry. With the organization of capital and labor at first unchanged, the amount of the product falls; each of the interested factors seeks at least to retain its absolute share of the product; friction and strife ensure with a threatening of the disruption of industry. What is the cause of this alternation of periods of activity and depression? What is the law? These are the fundamental problems of economic dynamics the solution of which is offered in this Essay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Cycles and Long Waves: A Behavioral Disequilibrium Perspective One of the principal mysteries theorists have faced is why there seem to be only a few distinct periodicities rather than cycles at all frequencies. And how might the different cyclical modes interact? Could, as Schumpeter (1939) argued, the coincident downturn of the business cycle, construction cycle, and long wave account for the severity of the Great Depression? More fundamentally, why should the frequencies of these cycles have (roughly) commensurate periods, so that their downturns might coincide? Indeed, even if one admits the possibility that individual firms might generate cyclical movements, the different parameters characterizing the structure and decision making processes of different firms would cause them to oscillate with different frequencies and phases. Why then should there be aggregate cyclical movements at all? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The two Business Cycles volumes bring together” the Nobel Laureate economist’s “most substantial contributions to technical economics” (Roger W. Garrison, Auburn University). In the years following its publication, F. A. Hayek’s pioneering work on business cycles was regarded as an important challenge to what was later known as Keynesian macroeconomics. Today, as debates rage on over the monetary origins of the current economic and financial crisis, economists are once again paying heed to Hayek’s thoughts on the repercussions of excessive central bank interventions. The latest editions in the University of Chicago Press’s ongoing series The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek, these volumes bring together Hayek’s work on what causes periods of boom and bust in the economy. Moving away from the classical emphasis on equilibrium, Hayek demonstrates that business cycles are generated by the adaptation of the structure of production to changes in relative demand. Thus, when central banks artificially lower interest rates, the result is a misallocation of capital and the creation of asset bubbles and additional instability. Business Cycles, Part I contains Hayek’s two major monographs on the topic: Monetary Theory and the Trade Cycle and Prices and Production. Reproducing the text of the original 1933 translation of the former, this edition also draws on the original German, as well as more recent translations. For Prices and Production, a variorum edition is presented, incorporating the 1931 first edition and its 1935 revision. Business Cycles, Part II assembles a series of Hayek’s shorter papers on the topic. The two volumes of Business Cycles also include extensive introductions by Hansjoerg Klausinger, providing background on the evolution of Hayek’s thought.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Computational Aspects of Real Business Cycle Theory It has been common practice in the recent Real Business Cycle (bbc) literature to approximate, quadratically, the return function about the steady state and then to use this approximate return function as the basis for generating the economy's equilibrium time series. This is done for well known reasons of analytic and computational simplicity with a quadratic return function the decision rules are linear and may be easily determined. To compute the optimal decision rules numerically via standard value iteration procedures is simply too intensive when the number of decision and state variables is large. Nevertheless, it is legitimate to question the extent to which accuracy is compromised using such approximate procedures. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Schumpeter is without doubt one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. "Business Cycles" [1939] is considered his great work. We reprint the first edition published in 1939 in two volumes. In "Business Cycles" Schumpeter focuses powerfully on the historical role of technological innovation in accounting for the high degree of instability in capitalists societies. He aims to analyze empirically the actual process of economic development using historical and statistical material based on the theoretical framework he developed in earlier writings. He tried to integrate theory and history primarily by means of statistics. It is because he adopted the method of filling in the statistical contours with detailed industrial history that "Business Cycles" comprises two large volumes. A Classic work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sources and Nature of Long-Term Memory in the Business Cycle We examine the stochastic properties of aggregate macroeconomic time series from the standpoint of fractionally integrated models, and focus on the persistence of economic shocks. We develop a simple macroeconomic model that exhibits long-term dependence, a consequence of aggregation in the presence of real business cycles. We derive the relation between properties of fractionally integrated macroeconomic time series and those of microeconomic data, and discuss how fiscal policy may alter their stochastic behavior. To implement these results empirically, we employ a test for fractionally integrated time series based on the Hurst-Mandelbrot rescaled range. This test is robust to short-term dependence, and is applied to quarterly and annual real GNP to determine the sources and nature of long-term dependence in the business cycle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Supergame-Theoretic Model of Business Cycles and Price Wars During Booms This paper studies implicitly colluding oligopolists facing fluctuating demand. The credible threat of future punishments provides the discipline that facilitates collusion. However, we find that the temptation to unilaterally deviate from the collusive outcome is often greater when demand is high. To moderate this temptation, the optimizing oligopoly reduces its profitability at such times, resulting in lower prices. If the oligopolists output is an input to other sectors, their output may increase too. This explains the co-movements of outputs which characterize business cycles. The behavior of the railroads in the 1880 3, the automobile industry in the 1950's and the cyclical behavior of cement prices and price-cost margins support our theory. (j.E.L. This book considers business cycles over three epochs 1870-1913, 1919-1938 and the post-World War II period. It provides an analysis of the key macroeconomic questions relating to economic fluctuations. Why are the ups and down more volatile in some epochs than others? Why are some business cycle shocks more persistent in their effects? Is there an international business cycle? Can present business cycle features predict future patterns? What impact will institutional changes, such as EMU have on future fluctuations?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An updated look at what Fischer Black's ideas on business cycles and equilibrium mean today Throughout his career, Fischer Black described a view of business fluctuations based on the idea that a well-developed economy will be continually in equilibrium. In the essays that constitute this book, which is one of only two books Black ever wrote, he explores this idea thoroughly and reaches some surprising conclusions. With the newfound popularity of quantitative finance and risk management, the work of Fischer Black has garnered much attention. Business Cycles and Equilibrium-with its theory that economic and financial markets are in a continual equilibrium-is one of his books that still rings true today, given the current economic crisis. This Updated Edition clearly presents Black's classic theory on business cycles and the concept of equilibrium, and contains a new introduction by the person who knows Black best: Perry Mehrling, author of Fischer Black and the Revolutionary Idea of Finance (Wiley). Mehrling goes inside Black's life to uncover what was occurring during the time Black wrote Business Cycles and Equilibrium, while also shedding light on what Black would make of today's financial and economic meltdown and how he would best advise to move forward. The essays within this book reach some interesting conclusions concerning the role of equilibrium in a developed economy Warns about the use and abuse of modeling Explains the risky business of risk in a straightforward and accessible style Contains chapters dedicated to "the effects of uncontrolled banking," "the trouble with econometric models," and "the effects of noise on investing" Includes commentary on Black's life and work at the time Business Cycles and Equilibrium was written as well as insight as to what Black would make of the current financial meltdown Engaging and informative, the Updated Edition of Business Cycles and Equilibrium will give you a better understanding of what is really going on during these uncertain and volatile financial times.
