Book excerpt: Electric (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles (PHEV) continue to gain attention and market share, not only as options for consumers but also for corporate fleets. EVs and PHEVs can contribute to lower operating costs through reduced maintenance requirements and enhanced fuel economy. In addition, a fleet of EVs or PHEVs, when parked and aggregated in a sizeable number, can provide regulation services to the grid through the electricity stored in the vehicle's batteries. This opportunity is known as Vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G). This thesis evaluates the economics for V2G-enabled fleets to participate in the regulation services market. In order to build a business case for fleet managers, we constructed a 10-year cash flow model that compares the operating, infrastructure, and capital costs, as well as the revenue opportunities for EVs, PHEVs, and ICEs. To quantify potential revenues, we adapted a tool that the ISO New England has used to simulate the revenues of participants in the regulation market for an alternative energy pilot. We show that ICEs, while having the lowest retail value, actually have the greatest NPV due to their high operating costs and inability to participate in the regulation services market. EVs have the highest retail value, but due to their large battery size are able to provide the most regulation services. The opportunity for V2G is critical for the attractiveness of the EV. PHEVs offer lower V2G revenue opportunity than the EVs but have greater operational flexibility. We determined that V2G revenue potential is driven by the charger capacity and battery size and there are tradeoffs associated with these components. A larger battery and charger will generate more money from regulation services, but their high investment cost may outweigh these benefits. The correct combination of charger capacity, battery size, and state of charge (SOC) is important. If the charger capacity is too large and SOC too high or low, a small battery can be charged or depleted too quickly, hindering its ability to provide regulation services.

In particular, there is a focus on the economic effects from the point of view of the fleet owner, as well as overall environmental effects. This is accomplished through case studies involving different fleet-based business models and analysing the resulting effects of a transition to EV fleets. Furthermore, comparisons will be made between similar scenarios in two different European cities, namely Barcelona and Stockholm. Additionally, aid and incentives to motivate a change from ICE and EV fleets are explored in detail. The results show annual savings of 4,279.94 EUR/year and 6,352.33 EUR/year for taxi drivers in Barcelona and Stockholm respectively, and 6,405,121 EUR/year and 8,594,734 EUR/year for public bus operators in Barcelona and Stockholm respectively. Furthermore, the results show a reduction in local emissions of 12,727 kg CO2/year for taxi drivers in Barcelona and Stockholm, and 22,835,163 kg CO2/year and 19,134,464 kg CO2/year for public bus operators in Barcelona and Stockholm respectively. Finally, savings for delivery service fleets are shown to range from 18.25 EUR for 4,000 km up to 3,744.25 EUR for 50,000 km. The thesis concludes by acknowledging the large positive environmental effects, while also pointing out that despite the yearly economic savings, there is still a large financial burden associated with a transition to EV fleets. Ways in which this financial burden can be reduced include increasing the annual kilometres driven by vehicles in the fleet, and increasing the difference in cost between electricity and fuel prices.

Four studies were conducted and are compiled in this dissertation that demonstrate the feasibility and provide guidelines for incorporating commercial electrified fleets as an active component of the energy economic value chain. The understanding gained enables viewing fleet electrification and V2G integration as IS enabled amplification of the energy economic value chain towards ecological sustainability.

My dissertation research focuses on developing mathematical models to design finer operational strategies for large-scale EV sharing fleets, especially in the stochastic and unbalanced transportation background. The basic blueprint is to upgrade EV fleet management from myopic strategies to location-based, energy-based, and environment-responsive policies. Specifically, we develop models to incorporate dynamic origin-destination pricing, congestion-responsive deployment, and battery health management into centralized EV sharing systems. First, we consider the dynamic pricing and dispatching of EVs given stochastic, time-varying, and heterogeneous customer demand. The EV operator monitors the fleet distribution and the demand signals to make real-time decisions. We adopt approximate dynamic programming (ADP) methods to solve the system. In particular, we develop neural network value function approximation (VFA) techniques that improve the policy performance. Our case study suggests that, with the demand-responsive pricing instrument, the EV fleet can effectively increase its expected profit, reduce the need for manual rebalancing, and smoothen the electricity usage across time. Next, we further investigate the interaction between the EV fleet and the congested transportation network. We extend the preliminary work to build a spatiotemporal network where the fleet operation and traffic states are captured by an approximated fluid model. The ADP algorithm maintains its effectiveness. We further design VFA methods to meet the learning need in the augmented state space. Numerical results demonstrate the benefit of dispatching vehicles using congestion-aware strategies. Finally, we consider the battery health management problem in an EV sharing fleet. We propose a continuous model to address the joint vehicle charging and moving problems for a large-scale EV sharing system. Under reasonable assumptions, the formulation is reduced to the continuous Kantorovich-Rubinstein transshipment and a battery-related optimization. On this basis, we obtain a near-optimal battery charging/replacing policy. Our model supports a shared EV fleet's decisions on charging device installation, vehicle relocation, and battery charging/replacing.
