This book was released on 2000 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do partnerships become more effective? How do good intentions and social vision transform into practical reality? Drawing on ten years of experience of tri-sector (governments, the private sector and the international community) partnership building, the authors of The Guiding Hand argue that the key to successful partnerships lies in the hands of the partnership "broker". The Guiding Hand explores the scope and potential of the broker's role, and identifies the skills and personal attributes that brokers need to be effective. It also includes a step-by-step "route map" to help partnership brokers identify suitable partners and nurture the partnership to maturity, as well as advice on how to appoint and supervise a broker. Book excerpt: On the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations, the world has faced its biggest shared test since the Second World War in the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Yet while our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together, international cooperation has never been harder to achieve. This report answers a call from UN Member States to provide recommendations to advance our common agenda and to respond to current and future challenges. Its proposals are grounded in a renewal of the social contract, adapted to the challenges of this century, taking into account younger and future generations, complemented by a new global deal to better protect the global commons and deliver global public goods. Through a deepening of solidarity—at the national level, between generations, and in the multilateral system—Our Common Agenda provides a path forward to a greener, safer and better future.

As well as encompassing a diverse range of collaborative forms and themes, and involving a variety of stakeholders, these collaborative initiatives are all notably shaped by the dynamics of the particular contexts in which they operate. These contexts include individual, organizational, sectoral, spatial, and geographical settings. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on partnering for the SDGs is also apparent. The interplay between these elements offers a useful global-local context for further inquiry and reflection on how deeper and more meaningful collaborative relationships might be developed to achieve the SDG targets and beyond
Book Synopsis The Future of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by : Samuel O. Idowu
Download or read book The Future of the UN Sustainable Development Goals written by Samuel O. Idowu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a business-oriented analysis of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In order to assess their impact on businesses and corporations, the book addresses all 17 goals and a broad range of industries. Gathering contributions from Africa, Europe and Asia, it presents both critical reviews and case studies. In turn, the book seeks to predict likely developments during the next decade. To do so, it examines evidence from today’s business world and how companies and corporations have been adopting the SDGs since their release. In this regard, it discusses the changes that will be required and how the agenda will affect the continent’s development path. An underlying theme throughout the book is the role of monetary value and investment for sustainable development: whether through financing, enhanced turnaround resulting from a more educated population, or more socially innovative entrepreneurs.

Book Synopsis From Summits to Solutions by : Hiroshi Kato
Download or read book From Summits to Solutions written by Hiroshi Kato and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A positive agenda for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 All 193 member nations of the United Nations agreed in September 2015 to adopt a set of seventeen "Sustainable Development Goals," to be achieved by 2030. Each of the goals—in such areas as education and health care —is laudable in and of itself, and governments and organizations are working hard on them. But so far there is no overall, positive agenda of what new things need to be done to ensure the goals are achieved across all nations. In a search of fresh approaches to the longstanding problems targeted by the Sustainable Development Goals, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings mounted a collaborative research effort to advance implementation of Agenda 2030. This edited volume is the product of that effort. The book approaches the UN's goals through three broad lenses. The first considers new approaches to capturing value. Examples include Nigeria's first green bonds, practical methods to expand women's economic opportunities, benchmarking to reflect business contributions to achieving the goals, new incentives for investment in infrastructure, and educational systems that promote cross-sector problem solving. The second lens entails new approaches to targeting places, including oceans, rural areas, fast-growing developing cities, and the interlocking challenge of data systems, including geospatial information generated by satellites. The third lens focuses on updating governance, broadly defined. Issues include how civil society can align with the SDG challenge; how an advanced economy like Canada can approach the goals at home and abroad; what needs to be done to foster new approaches for managing the global commons; and how can multilateral institutions for health and development finance evolve.

Book Synopsis Business, Government and the SDGs by : Mahmoud Mohieldin
Download or read book Business, Government and the SDGs written by Mahmoud Mohieldin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to revise and challenge the roles and traditional realms of influence that national and local governments, and businesses at a critical juncture in terms of achieving sustainable development, faces when tackling the dual challenges of climate change and post-COVID recovery. Using the broader lens of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to assess the roles and responsibilities of each of these stakeholders and their relationships, the book offers policy, economic arguments, case studies and examples to argue that neither national or local governments, nor companies, could afford to deviate from the SDGs in the recovery from the current crisis, nor that the imperative of bold climate action should detract from the broader focus on sustainability. The analysis frames the debate of how a balance between people, planet, and profits can be achieved and how nations, regions and cities, and businesses, with their representative organizations, can achieve a sustainable recovery from the current global crisis, and contribute to climate smart, resilient and inclusive development.

Download or read book UNDP's Private Sector and Foundations Strategy for the Sustainable Development Goals 2016-2020 written by United Nations Development Programme and published by United Nations Development Programme Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (UNDP IICPSD). This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UNDP’s Private Sector and Foundations Strategy for the Sustainable Development Goals 2016–2020 defines how UNDP plans to engage with – and work on – sustainable development issues with the private sector and philanthropic foundations. The goal is to enable these actors to become transformative partners in implementing all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to achieve UNDP’s vision of poverty eradication and a reduction in inequalities. The strategy aims to position UNDP as a partner of choice for the private sector and foundations in SDG implementation, while maximizing the impact of the private sector and philanthropy on sustainable development. The target audience for this strategy includes our partners in the private sector and philanthropy as well as UNDP Headquarters units, regional bureaux, regional hubs and country offices that work with the private sector and foundations on development issues. It explains UNDP’s programmatic approach in working directly with the private sector and foundations as well as with other partners involved in development. By engaging the private sector and foundations through this strategy, UNDP can support governments to establish an enabling environment for aligning these stakeholders’ core operations with the SDGs. This strategy is complementary to UNDP’s Green Commodities and Trade Guidance Note, UNDP Guidance Note on Jobs and Livelihoods, UNDP’s Strategy for Supporting Sustainable and Equitable Management of the Extractive Sector for Human Development, International Financial Institutions Partnership Strategy 2016-2020, the Recovery Strategy, UNDP support to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Policy and Programme brief and the Mainstreaming, Acceleration, Policy Support Approach (MAPS) enabling responsive, coherent and inclusive support to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
