Charterers may also insure dead freight which they are liable to pay under the charter-party, and also the advance freight. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Accounting, Vol. 4: Advanced and Analytical Accounting Ten years ago almost any contribution to the liter ature of accountancy would have been welcomed. Today, however, with the increasing number of excel lent publications, it is incumbent upon one who puts forth a new accounting work to justify his action. Much more is it necessary to explain the publication of a set of accounting books. Hence it is desirable to state at the outset the purpose of Business Account ing and to outline its scope and general methods of presentation. While many books have been published on account ing topics, in almost every case they are unrelated vol umes. In some few instances, a volume on accounting has logically followed another by the same author, but with these few exceptions every one published has been written without connection with, or adjustment to, any of those already existing. Under these conditions, the student of accounting, to get any connected and logical knowledge of his subject, must find one of his books here, another there, a third somewhere else, and bridge over the gaps between them as best he may. The proc ess is difficult, and the accounting knowledge he obtains is not always well co-ordinated and logically developed. The volumes of Business Accounting are intended to meet this situation. They cannot, it is true, provide a course of study in the sense that prescribed readings are recommended, written answers to questions required. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School of Applied Business Science, Vol. 1: General Accounting The basic principles on which the foundation of bookkeeping and accounting are built will probably outlast any treatise on the subject. A writer of a text book on accounting does not concern him self so much with discovering new laws as with the manner of pre senting old ones, those that have long stood the test of practice and are now accepted as self-evident truths. Just as the editor must get into the hands Of the public at frequent intervals information with regard to the news Of the world or with regard to some special field Of activity or learning, SO the accountant must get into the hands of the business man at reasonably frequent intervals such informa tion as has: been 'enumerated. Usually there are several persons in the employ Of a business whose task 15 in part to prepare informa tion for the general manager, but usually such information 15 either not in the particular shape most useful for the manager or is not SO correlated with other information as to bring out the larger facts that the manager needs to know. It is the task Of the accountant to put the information in the desired Shape and to correlate various kinds Of information, or, as we commonly say, edit the informa tion. Because the accountant must prepare information for the general manager or other Officer, he usually occupies a more or less confidential position, and Often is a vice-president of a corporation. He must have the knack Of preparing information in shape for use by others, he must have sufficient imagination to see what sort Of information the various officials will desire, and he must have sufficient power Of analysis to see how to get the sort Of information that will enable the operating Officers Of the business to tie up the various parts Of the business with each other and with the outside business world and he should provide them with such information even if they have not realized the need Of such par ticular information. It is his task, in a sense, to foresee what information about the business will be later required and to see that such information will be available at the proper time. He must anticipate the need for information, SO that he may have his lines laid before the occurrence Of the event, for the procurement Of that information as soon as the event happens. This is just the task Of the editor Of a newspaper or a magazine, for he not only tells people what they already wish to know, but he gives them what they are glad to know, though they had not previously known that they needed to know it.
