Book excerpt: The African-Bush Pilot The debut autobiography by Cecil Mullins is an auspicious success from the very first page to the last. He tells the breathtaking odyssey of his life from a small town Southwest Virginia boy to a well known, highly regarded pilot who flies the aircraft he dreamt of as a young man. His writing style is fast paced, graphic and often gritty with an occasional side bar of humor and ribald commentary about the fairer sex he encounters during his highly charged, adventurous career as a "Bush Pilot" and his unpredictable forays with non-scheduled airlines. The book is a must read. The reader will feel as if he is in the cockpit with the "Bush Pilot" as the fights the elements, warfare, mechanical and equipment problems and violent weather. It is a great book...you will not want to put it down. Go out and get a copy and experience the thrill of what you find as you turn the next page...and the next. Reaching the pinnacle of his career by surviving unbelievable mechanical failures and mishaps, violent weather, flying into African civil wars and revolutions in the dead of night to evade missiles and gunfire were but a part of the life he chose to live. He survived and prospered by his intellect, courage and unparalleled skill as a top flight mechanic, flight engineer, co-pilot and finally pilot and Captain of his own craft.

Book excerpt: Always desiring to take the road least traveled, in 1998 I made plans through Smith Travel in Easton, Maryland to take one very special road and explore game preserves in South and East Africa. But the roads I travel are between 3,000 and 9,000 feet above mean sea level in the left seat of a single engine airplane. And that was how I wanted to do my exploring in South and East Africa. Mr. George Sellers, a travel agent with Smith Travel at the time, was given the task of working out my travel plans. He chose Mike Johnson and Andrew Kerrich who operate Ubuntu Safaris in Johannesburg, South Africa to customize my safari, and gave them the particulars of what they should do. They were to lease a single engine airplane for me to fly beginning in late July and lasting through August, 1998, and employ someone to validate my U. S. pilot license, qualifying me to fly a plane of African Registry. A myriad of other requests were made for them to accomplish, including a trip to visit a falconer on his farm in Jacobsdal, in the Orange Free State, for an overnight stay, a hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti with a champagne breakfast in the middle of the desert, a two hour elephant ride in the wilds of Zimbabwe, and a flight over the Indian Ocean to the Spice Island of Zanzibar. They were to work out the details of what visa's I would need to visit game preserves in up to 10 countries in South and East Africa, and figure the cost of everything for me to pre-pay before leaving the U. S. to guard against any chance of unexpected surprises while there. The first obstacle confronting me was my age. My seventy-ninth birthday loomed less than four months away, and to qualify for insurance on the plane they leased for me, it would be necessary for me to have a co-pilot accompany me on my entire journey. I authorized them to find me a co-pilot and they engaged Ms. Kym Morton, a consultant with Ubuntu on safaris, a fifteen year veteran African bush pilot, and a grade II instructor. She agreed to validate my U.S. pilot license, and accompany me on my month long safari. To my delight, she was a member of International Women Pilots, (more prominently known as The Ninety-Nines), the same as I. Through the expertise of the people at Smith Travel, everything went along smoothly, and on the morning of July 27, I boarded my flight to New York to connect with the South African Airline for a seventeen hour flight to Johannesburg, South Africa, landing at 3:00 PM on July 28, 1998. After going through immigration, I wheeled a cart with my belongings out to the airport lobby, where I saw two handsome fellows with a large sign that read BARBARA FEADER. Assuming the obvious, I wheeled happily over to where they waited, and was soon seated in the back of their car being whisked to Lanseria Airport, just outside Johannesburg, while Mike briefed me on what plans had been made for the evening, and to meet my co-pilot, Kym, and look over the plane she had reserved for me. The plane was a high-wing Cessna Skylane 182RG similar to the one I had flown in Kalispel, Montana to take a mountain flying course in 1975, and one I had flown on safari in Australia in July and August 1978. The only difference was, it was a later model, and had retractable gear. Kym had leased the plane from the owner for our safari, but learned a day or two before I arrived that the owner had decided to sell it, leaving us without transportation. It was a squeeze play on the owner's part to force Kym to buy the plane, and it worked, because it was too late for her to make other arrangements. Had she not done so, my safari would have been snafued. I was most grateful for her "gift" and really hoped she had not put herself in an untenable situation because of me. It was then time for Mike and Andrew to drop me at my hotel, The Hertford, a few miles away, where I was really ready for a soothing soak in a hot bath, and dinner, before be

A true narrative of a time when navigation aids were practically non-existent and poorly equipped light aircraft were the norm. An exciting read, particularly for pilots and flying enthusiasts, set in the rugged and vast landscape of a still largely uncharted part of Africa.

Book excerpt: This book focuses mainly on highly advanced techniques and skills required to operate safely in remote, challenging and extreme conditions.Any pilot who is looking for training or mentoring in Bush and Mountain Flying skills and techniques should seek it from an appropriately skilled, experienced and knowledgeable pilot in this field and not a flight instructor whose claim to fame is flying around the ¿cabbage patch¿ or only flying charters or airliners. A flight instructor rating does not qualify one as an instant ¿flight guru¿, knowledgeable in all aspects of flying, nor does it make one an appropriately skilled, experienced and knowledgeable pilot in bush and mountain flying. The techniques in this book explore the very edge of the airplane's performance envelope and include flying close to stall speeds at low altitudes and thus are extremely dangerous to inexperienced pilots without the required skills and judgement.

Book excerpt: "Jorgy" Jorgensen is a legendary Alaska Native bush pilot, but his life is much more than a great flying story. He was raised by his Inupiat Eskimo mother and his Norwegian gold-miner father in a tiny mining camp in interior Alaska. After his father's death during the Depression, when Jorgy was only seven, they lived a subsistence lifestyle: Jorgy worked in the gold mines, ran a trap line, and mushed dogs. He served in Mukluk Marston's Alaska Territorial Guard and was a sergeant by the age of 17. After Pearl Harbor, he became Sig Wien's fire potter and gas boy, and learned to fly. He operated a dragline in the summer, he was a boxing champion, and he singlehandedly desegregated Nome's movie theater. His flying career was equally varied: he flew all across Alaska, from the T-3 ice island delivering scientific equipment and supplies, to delivering cargoes of fresh fish in King Salmon, to moving reindeer from Hagemeister Island; he flew in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, Canada. He flew from 1943 to 2001, logging more than 35,000 hours of flight time, with only one--minor--accident. Telling his extraordinary life story in spare, no-fuss fashion, this book allows a vivid glimpse into a tulmultuous and exciting period in aviation from the point of view of one of Alaska's early Native bush pilots.

Book excerpt: This book is a revised version of "To Fly". "Biggin Hill and a Bush Pilot" is a compendium of stories about flying adventures of a father and son, the father in the RAF and the son in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Bill Igoe learned to fly an aeroplane in the RAF in 1934. After a spectacular crash in 1938 which left him badly burned and ended his flying days, he was, as Senior Controller at Biggin Hill, closely involved in many WW2 dramas, such as the saga of the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. And Bill's son Brian learned to fly forty years after that, when the Concorde was around. Both had a lot of fun and some stories to tell about their common addiction. These are some of the stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in suburban Pretoria, Steve Joubert dreamed of a career as a pilot. After undergoing SAAF pilot training, a freak injury put an end to his hopes of flying fighter jets. Instead he learned to fly the versatile Alouette helicopter. He had barely qualified as a chopper pilot when he was sent to the Border, where he flew missions over Namibia and southern Angola to supply air cover to troops on the ground. As a gunship pilot, Steve saw some of the worst scenes of war, often arriving first on the scene after a contact or landmine attack. He also recalls the lighter moments of military life, as well as the thrill of flying. A born maverick, his lack of respect for authority often got him into trouble with his superiors. His experiences affected him deeply, and led him eventually to question his role in the war effort. As the Border War escalated, his disillusionment grew. This gripping memoir is a powerful plea for healing and understanding.
