Download or read book When the Garden Was Eden written by Harvey Araton and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of The Boys of Summer and The Bronx Is Burning, New York Times sports columnist Harvey Araton delivers a fascinating look at the 1970s New York Knicks—part autobiography, part sports history, part epic, set against the tumultuous era when Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, and Bill Bradley reigned supreme in the world of basketball. Perfect for readers of Jeff Pearlman’s The Bad Guys Won!, Peter Richmond’s Badasses, and Pat Williams’s Coach Wooden, Araton’s revealing story of the Knicks’ heyday is far more than a review of one of basketball’s greatest teams’ inspiring story—it is, at heart, a stirring recreation of a time and place when the NBA championships defined the national dream.

Download or read book Paterno written by Joe Posnanski and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From America’s premier sportswriter, the definitive, #1 New York Times bestselling biography of Joe Paterno. Joe Posnanski’s biography of the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno follows in the tradition of works by Richard Ben Cramer on Joe DiMaggio and David Maraniss on Vince Lombardi. Having gained unprecedented access to Paterno, as well as the coach’s personal notes and files, Posnanski spent the last two years of Paterno’s life covering the coach, on (and off) the field and through the scandal that ended Paterno’s legendary career. Joe Posnanski, who in 2012 was named the Best Sportswriter in America by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame, was with Paterno and his family as a horrific national scandal unfolded and Paterno was fired. Within three months, Paterno died of lung cancer, a tragic end to a life that was epic, influential, and operatic. Paterno is the fullest description we will ever have of the man’s character and career. In this honest and surprising portrait, Joe Posnanski brings new insight and understanding to one of the most controversial figures in America.

Book Synopsis The Spartan Succession by : Mark A. O'Connell
Download or read book The Spartan Succession written by Mark A. O'Connell and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s and early 1970s, the Wolverines of Andrew Lewis High (Salem, Virginia) won gridiron acclaim under legendary head coach Eddie Joyce. From 1962 through 1971, the Wolverines won two state titles and finished as a runner-up three times. Though unmentioned in the nationally acclaimed film Remember the Titans, their equally compelling story is chronicled in the author's previous work, The Team the Titans Remember. Located in a city known for its deep civic pride and passion for sports, especially football, a new era began in 1977 when the newly established Salem High opened its doors to the student bodies from both Andrew Lewis and neighboring Glenvar High, which became middle schools. The football program at Salem struggled for years until a huge turning point in 1983. That was when Willis White was hired as the new head coach and soon turned the team into a winner. Under White and his immediate successor, the Spartans of Salem have succeeded to the throne once held by the Wolverines and, to date, have played in twelve state championship games and won nine!
Book Synopsis The 'desegregation' of English schools by : Olivier Esteves
Download or read book The 'desegregation' of English schools written by Olivier Esteves and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dispersal, or ‘bussing’, was introduced in England in the early-1960s after white parents expressed concerns that the sudden influx of non-Anglophone South Asian children was holding back their own children’s education. It consisted in sending busloads of mostly Asian children to predominantly white suburban schools in an effort to ‘spread the burden’ and to promote linguistic and cultural integration. Although seemingly well-intentioned, dispersal proved a failure: it was based on racial identity rather than linguistic deficiency and ultimately led to an increase in segregation, as bussed pupils were daily confronted with racial bullying in dispersal schools. This is the first ever book on English bussing, based on an in-depth study of local and national archives, alongside interviews with formerly-bussed pupils decades later.
