Book excerpt: Few words are needed in this inventive and fun transportation adventure! "Bus! Stop!" a boy yells, as his bus pulls away one early morning. He must wait for the next bus. But the next one does NOT look like his bus at all. And neither does the next one, or the next. At first, the boy is annoyed. Then he is puzzled. Then intrigued. The other buses look much more interesting than his bus. Maybe he should try a different bus after all, and he's glad he does! Here is a book with few words and delightful illustrations that shows very young children that trying something a little different can be a lot of fun.

Book excerpt: Art and literature are essential components of a child's education that encourage creativity, self-expression, and abstract, critical thinking. These skills, in turn, help a child excel in math, science, reading, and drama. However, traditional educational settings often destroy a child's innate self-esteem and creativity. Art and Children is an indispensable aid to educators and librarians interested in helping young children achieve their artistic and creative potential. This teaching aid provides thematic, unit-based activities that use art and literature to develop skills such as interpretation, self-expression, critical thinking, experiential learning, and problem solving. Accompanied by numerous examples, it offers step-by-step suggestions on how to plan, implement, and present these units and their related activities. Addresses of art suppliers are also provided.

After King’s assassination in 1968, Dixon continued his activism by starting the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party at the age of nineteen. In My People Are Rising, Dixon offers a candid account of life in the Black Panther Party. Through his eyes, we see the courage of a generation that stood up to injustice, their political triumphs and tragedies, and the unforgettable legacy of Black Power. “This book is a moving memoir experience: a must read. Book excerpt: Jai l Time, What you need to know... ...Before you go to federal pr i son Jail Time was a book I never wanted to write. Federal Prison was a place I never wanted to be. Sometimes things just happen that you really can't explain or even know why they happened. They just do. Life is funny that way- one day you are on top of the world and the next day you're in a bottomless pit-you think. But later you discover that the pit's bottom is even deeper. There are many challenges facing those individuals entering federal prison. These challenges are not easy, but they are controllable. Controllable, if you have the proper knowledge, resources, and motivation. The motivation is to get home to your family as soon as possible. This is where Jail Time can help. Jail Time offers solutions to the problems that men and women facing federal incarceration are confronted with. Jail Time provides a wealth of information to help families get through their ordeal together and get the offender back home in the shortest possible amount of time. Born into an impoverished and broken family in Ohio, Michael Frantz studied diligently and graduated with honors from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He continued his studies and earned a post graduate degree from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy with highest honors. With little or no money he started his own home medical equipment business in 1980 and grew it in sales to over $7,000,000 a year. At the height of his business he had six locations in five different Ohio cities. In October of 2002 the FBI raided all six of his stores in what was to become a two year legal and emotional nightmare. They alleged Medicare and tax fraud. In 2004 Mr. Frantz reluctantly accepted a plea agreement and was eventually sentenced in July of 2005 to 51 months in the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) in Miami, Florida. He spent nearly 16 months there. Later he was transferred to the adjacent low security Federal Correctional Institution (FCI). In 2008, he won his appeal and was released from federal prison on July 18, 2008 after serving nearly 36 months in federal confinement. This, as he likes to say, was a life and career changing experience.

Book excerpt: “With pleasing design and a multiplicity of details to discover, this variation on the game of ‘I Spy’ is sure to please the youngest.” —Kirkus Reviews “As a bus progresses on its route to the garage, where it will park for the night, various travelers—actors, commuters, families—hop off at their stops. When a number of riders is named (for example, 10 baseball players disembark and head for a playing field), readers can count along, but more often, the text suggests different objects to pick out from each spread. Gomi’s pictures are beautifully composed [and] will appeal to children for their simplicity, and to adults for their strong graphics.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The everyday sights, sounds and smells of a colorful and bustling city come alive in this book - a child's view of Boston. Maryann Cocca-Leffler remembers frequent bus trips she took into the city as a girl with her mother and little sister. Together they shopped for delicious treats in the Italian North End - warm pizza and creamy cannoli - or stopped for ice cream sundaes at Bailey's after a day of bargain hunting at Filene's Basement. One of the best things about the trips was the bus driver, Bill. He started his route each day in their neighborhood and knew all the kids on the street. In this engaging Parents' Choice Award book, the author-artist conveys all the warmth and simple pleasure of childhood memories and the people and places that made them so special.
