This book was released on 2014-07-12 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plain Dealing, Louisiana is located in the northern part of Bossier Parish, in the northwest corner of the state. This book is a listing of burials in the Plain Dealing Cemetery from its beginnings in the late 1880's to early 2014. This book is not intended to be a definitive list of all burials in the cemetery, as some burials may have been missed over the years due to a lack of headstones or burial records. Hopefully this book will be helpful to those looking for family or ancestors who lived in the Plain Dealing area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of several books which I hope to publish as companion books to my original publication, "Burials in the Plain Dealing, Louisiana Cemetery: An Index," published in 2014. That volume was primarily just a name index to burials in the cemetery, listing each person alphabetically. Starting with this volume, I try to provide a pictorial look at some of the headstones on display in the cemetery. Seeing actual headstones can be just as rewarding as seeing a name and dates in an index. Hopefully, these pictures will bring a different perspective of those who lived and died in the Plain Dealing, Louisiana area. This volume includes headstones for a wide variety of people, from town leaders, teachers, classmates, to ordinary families who lived in Plain Dealing. It should be noted that with over 1,700 burials in the cemetery, it is impossible for me to include photographs of every headstone in this book. My plans are to publish as many of the acceptable photographs as possible in coming volumes.

Download or read book Fragile Grounds written by Jessica H. Schexnayder and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of a 2018 Preserve Louisiana Award and a 2018 Coastal Stewardship Award Fragile Grounds compiles stories and photographs of endangered cemeteries throughout Louisiana's coastal zone and beyond. These burial places link the fragile land to the frailty of the state's threatened community structures. The book highlights the state's vibrant diversity by showing its unique burial customs and traditions, while it also identifies the urgent need for ongoing documentation of cultural elements at risk. Cemeteries associated with the culturally rich communities of Louisiana reflect the history and global settlement patterns of the state. Yet many are endangered due to recurring natural and man-made events. Nearly 80 percent of the nation's coastal land loss occurs in Louisiana. Coastal erosion, sinking land, flooding, storm surge, and sea-level rise have led to an inland migration that threatens to unravel the fabric of Louisiana and, by association, hastens the demise of its burial places. As people are forced inland, migrants abandon, neglect, or often overlook cemeteries as part of the cultural landscape. In terms of erosion, when the land goes, the cemetery goes with it. Cemeteries fall prey to inland and coastal flooding. As cities grow outward, urban sprawl takes over the landscape. Cemeteries lose out to forces such as expansion, eminent domain, and urban neglect. Not only do cemeteries give comfort for the living, but they also serve as a vital link to the past. Once lost, that past cannot be recovered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 366 pages with 113 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Bossier Parish, Louisiana, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 4760 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 49 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for?
