Book excerpt: Nothing exciting ever happened in the small Australian country mining town of Coolagoola, that is what four ten-year-old friends - Paul, Ben, Sophie and Ari - thought until they discovered a strange creature at a remote billabong. While searching for a meteor the four friends, along with Paul’s younger sister Jenny, entered a dark cave and encountered a scary creature covered in spines, claws and horns. They believe that they have discovered a Bunyip, a mythical Australian Aboriginal creature, and so began an adventure that the children would never forget involving monsters, monster hunters, a gold mine and mangos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Magic is a fact of life, like murder, sex and monsters." So says Dinewan, the old aboriginal witch doctor with bright orange eyes. In this final installment of the Bunyip series, what began from family legend will culminate in a zoological hunt of the millennium. Tristram Jones and his teacher, Ivan MacAllister, must again contend with Dinewan. His tactics have become more dangerous and determined; the lines have been drawn and the stakes have never been higher. From the university to the wild high country, Tristram once again follows the call of the mysterious Bunyip. It will be the last time he does. Bunyip is a modern tale influenced by much older stories and spiced with science, legend and sensual experiences. It is gruesome in places, funny in others and tender where it counts. This book is intended for a mature readership and is not suitable for readers under the age of 18.

Magical beasts of the worlds beginning, carrgimin (a type of magical monitor lizard) and magic roam the world. Earth spirits enable the dreaming; a state where magic exists and can change things for good or ill. The Invasion is the first in the series, entering a world of dreaming magic, where a black robed wizard wants to destroy and others defend the lighthouses protecting the dreaming. The great hall of Wilmark is facing a great threat and little can save it or can it? One Yowie (yeti, big foot or many other names) thinks differently. Among it all one burrun is a focus of hatred he doesnt even know about.

Book excerpt: The newborn lambs are going missing and Matthew thinks the bunyip that lives in a cave under the water in their billabong is taking them. His grandfather told him about it. His mum, dad and big brother say bunyips don't exist, but Matthew is not so sure. He and his grandfather camp out one night to watch the sheep. Matthew sees a dark shape dive into the waterhole. Now he is sure it is the bunyip. His big brother brings home his scuba gear to find out once and for all what Matthew saw diving into the billabong. Will they find the bunyip or will it find them? Bunyips are popular subjects with a lot of readers and The Bunyip in the Billabong makes use of many icons of the Australian bush from billabongs to dingoes to sheep. Granddad is a quintessential teller of bush tales. Elaine Ouston tells a good story. The pace moves along smoothly, with likable characters and a warm familycentred tone. The dialogue is natural and the sheep station setting well realised. I liked the way the mystery was resolved, with no fuzzy question marks over the ending. This short but fully-formed chapter book is ideal for reading aloud or for independent reading. Since the protagonist, Matthew, is eleven, it would also work for less able or less engaged older readers. - Sally Olgers
