It is published at this time in the hope of eliciting such comment from the students of the Coleoptera that, in the event of a new Check List being published, the materials for a satisfactory arrangement of the families, after free discussion by those interested, may be available. It may be added that the work on which the list is based, for which we are most grateful to the authors, gives the definition of the family names employed, and is stated to be in turn based on the works of Sharp and Ganglbaur; and that it coincides, in the main, with the "Catalogus Coleopterrorum" of Junk, as far as that work has been completed. The differences between its classification and that of Leconte and Horn, repeated in Henshaw's Check List, are the result of the studies during the last forty years of a host of Coleopterists, who have corrected conclusions derived by Leconte, mainly from consideration of the external adult characters, by studies of the larvae in some families and by studies of the fossil insects in others; as well as by studies in some groups of the internal anatomy. The differences are not always very great, consisting often in treating Leconte's subfamilies as families or vice versa, or in changes in the relative position of the families. Douglas Hood at Rochester, New York, and to see his excellent collection of Thysanoptera; I am greatly indebted to him for many helpful suggestions in connection with the preparation of this paper. I also express my thanks to Dr. H. Priesner, of Cairo, Egypt, who very kindly gave me his views on the relationships of several of the forms described herein. Heliothrips sylvanus spec. nov. (Pi. I, Figs, 1, 2.) Female (macropterous). Length about 1.3 mm. Color blackish brown to black, antennae largely yellow. Head dark brown, yellowish brown between eyes, eyes black, surrounded by yellowish margins. Antenna: I and II brown, III yellow with basal fourth light brown, IV and V yellow, VI yellow in basal half and shaded light brown distally, VII light brown, VIII gray. Mouth cone dark brown. Prothorax like head, blackish brown over coxae; pterothorax blackish brown on sides and on mesonotum, rest yellowish brown. All legs rather uniformly blackish brown. Abdomen dark brown, with blackish brown transverse lines between segments (due to overlapping). Wings greyish yellow, extreme base of fore-wing, and basal half of scale brown. All parts of body and legs heavily reticulated. Head about as long as wide, and abbtit 1.7 as long as prothorax. Cheeks distinctly concave, head distinctly constricted at extreme base. In any case we shall make our Bulletin the most useful and practical work for the collector and student of Entomology that our space admits of. Believing that our collectors would rather know the species already described than to read descriptions of new species and varieties, often of doubtful validity and based on imperfect or rubbed single specimens, our Bulletin will aim in the former direction entirely and new descriptions will be few.
