Book excerpt: Competitiveness of a country requires continuous upgrading and, sometimes, major transformation. Thailand is at the crossroad. It can no longer pursue a strategy based on low-cost advantages, but its capability achievements are still too low to become an advanced economy. This book points out weaknesses of Thailand's national innovation system or education and suggests how the country should develop new capabilities to survive and prosper in the globalized and fiercely competitive world. It will be useful to researchers and students who want to learn more about Thailand and emerging countries, and also to policy-makers and executives involved in economic and industrial development. This is a qualitative research by document analysis, observation in the target area and in-depth interview. The sample group consisted of those involved in the development of special economic zone and those involved in giving the commercial bank credit and 16 main informants. From the study it is found that 1) In the competitiveness of the construction of the smart cities in Thailand, there are not many experts who could construct the high-rise building in accordance with the design evaluation criteria. The competition is not high but there is a very high investment risk. 2) The design of high-rise construction in the smart cities of Thailand, is to consider from designing the building construction by using the building technology in the construction, designing the use of energy inside the building and the interior design. That the designed construction is outstanding different, modern, indicating the vision of being in the smart cities of using ICT, innovation in the building, with the design of net zero energy consumption. This will capture the interest of the people in the smart cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomic policies matter for sustainable long-term growth. With global fluctuations, deviation from a stable growth path can be minimized by countercyclical macro policies, if properly implemented. This book examines Thailand’s 55 years of experience in macroeconomic management and provides valuable lessons for other emerging economies at various stages of development on what could have been done to avoid economic instability. It also examines how short-term complications can develop into perennial problems obstructing the process of economic development. The book provides an alternative approach to the study of economic growth through the inclusion of both economic history and institutional context, appealing to academics and economists who focus on economic growth, economic development, international macroeconomics, public policy study, business cycles, and the open-market economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand's economic and social transformation of the last 50 years has placed it in the ranks of upper middle-income countries and made it an integral part of global value chains. It has also established itself as a regional hub for key transport and logistics, with a world-class airport. To continue its rise, Thailand needs to move into the higher-value segments of economic activity and create high-quality jobs that are regionally broader based. This report identifies the major constraints to accomplishing these goals and analyzes the main challenges. Among them, the country must: enhance research and development and international technology transfers; elevate worker skills and their industrial relevance; address structural impediments to competition, notably in services; provide advanced transport and logistics infrastructure; and improve access to finance and technology for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Book excerpt: Once recognised as a high-performing Asian newly industrialising economy, Thailand's growth rate and competitive edge have declined substantially. With slower adoption and movement towards the knowledge -intensive industry, the loss of competitive edge has caused concerns among Thai policy makers, with Thailand succumbing to the middle-income trap. This book analyses Thailand's declining competitiveness in the past 50 years, taking into consideration both national- and sectoral-level roles and capabilities of key players -- a must-read for both students and practitioners with interest in development economics, industrial economics and public policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to identify key issues and developments in ASEAN-5 that illustrate the transition of this region towards a knowledge-based economy. The book contributes to understanding the opportunities and challenges faced by emerging economies. It explains the transition process from a knowledge based perspective, showing how knowledge creation and innovation contribute to the competitiveness of companies and sectors in this region. The book takes a distinctly ASEAN perspective by discussing examples of the transition process from all ASEAN 5 nations that show how this region is attempting to link up to the global knowledge economy of the 21st Century. To achieve these aims the book is divided into three parts, preceded by an introductory chapter explaining the logic, objectives and contributions of the book. Part I discusses ASEAN-5 as an emerging hub in the global economy. Part II discusses the global links of the ASEAN region. Part III highlights innovation support in the ASEAN region. Each part identifies key developments and discusses relevant challenges and opportunities regarding the economic transition process based on examples for the various ASEAN-5 nations. The book contributes to the literature on emerging economies by explaining their challenges and opportunities of the catching-up process from a knowledge-based perspective. It is definitely a must-read.

It does not therefore directly treat bilateral relations between these powers, as these already constitute the subject of many other studies. A lengthy perspective has been taken into account in order to recall past legacies, some of which are still painfully contentious, and to record evolutions in attitudes and strategies vis-Ă -vis Asian countries.
