Book excerpt: In 2007, the Rideau Canal and Kingston Fortifications were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A trip to any of the 24 lock stations along the 202-kilometre waterway, or to Fort Henry and the Martello towers in Kingston, reveals why the Rideau has earned this distinction. The historical sites are remarkably well-preserved and the canal system continues to operate almost exactly as it did when completed in 1832. Rideau Canal: A Historical Guide was written and illustrated to provide visitors with a historical overview of the waterway's origins, the story of its supervising engineer and creator Lt.Col. John By, as well as insights into its operations and construction. The book contains dozens of full-color photos of the canal as it looks today and historical paintings from the time of its building.

Book excerpt: This study presents a brief history of the Ottawa River canal system from the time construction began until 1963. Although the Carillon Canal (a national historic park) would normally have been the focal point of such an undertaking, a specific study of this canal proved virtually impossible owing to the lack of information pertaining to its initial construction period. Records of the commercial use of the canal over the years were equally sparse. Fortunately, however, the history of the Carillon Canal is closely linked with that of several other canals (the Vaudreuil, St. Anne's, Chute-a-Blondau, and Grenville canals) constructed on the lower Ottawa River in the early 19th century. As a consequence this study encompasses the entire Ottawa River canal system.

I will show you the breakup when the river comes alive with wildlife, and the early spring when the canal is being readied for use. The summer section needed few words, yet you may be surprised at the variety and wealth of watercraft that come by Manotick. In the fall, I will show you the almost unbelievable scale of the Canada geese migration right on our doorstep and then finally the canal workers as they look ahead to repair and prepare the canal for yet another navigation season. I have included an abridged course on engineering 101 so you can get a sense of the hidden features of the design that surrounds us. I have also included an historical section as to ‘Why’ the canal needed to be built. You can get a sense of the book by looking at this short video https://youtu.be/nnqtcDj9j8U Many of the photographs I have uploaded to the website https://rideaucanaldiary.blogspot.com/

Book excerpt: In this book, I will share a year on the canal with you. I am starting the diary in mid-winter. The days are getting noticeably longer, bright sunny days, still bitterly cold, are lifting our spirits; we are daring to look ahead to spring and even the next snowstorm will not be so bad as it just might be the last one. I will show you the breakup as the river comes alive with wildlife, and the early spring when the canal is being readied for use. In the summer you will be surprised at the variety and wealth of water crafts that use the canal. In the fall I will show you the almost unbelievable scale of the Canada geese migration right on our doorstep. Then in late fall join me as we see the canal workers repair and prepare the canal for yet another navigation season.\\\

Book excerpt: The Georgian Bay Ship Canal was a river and lake canalization scheme designed to create a commercial waterway along the route of the voyageurs. It was the dream of Canadian businessmen and entrepreneurs for centuries. Originally a trade route for Indigenous peoples, it became Canada's first Trans-Canada Highway during the fur trade, greatly contributing to the economic development of the colonies of France and later Britain. In the early years of Canadian nationhood it was viewed as the shortest route to get prairie grain to world markets. The canal scheme was supported by no fewer than six Canadian Prime Ministers and for a century less two years was surveyed a dozen times. It was also hotly debated in the Canadian Senate and House of Commons. The scheme was supported by lobby groups in Northern and Eastern Ontario as well as the Montreal business elite. It was strongly criticized by citizen's groups in cities along the shores of the rival Welland-St. Lawrence route. The story told is why the scheme, despite its geographical advantages, failed to see the bucket of a steam shovel. It is a story of political intrigue, Northern Ontario versus the South and the role that federal government overspending played in its demise. It was also at the center of the battle between federal and provincial governments over control of the lucrative resource of hydro-electricity. The book contains many historic maps and photos of the route as well as modern images from this famous Canadian waterway.
