Book Synopsis Building Our House on Rock by : Dennis Hamm SJ
Download or read book Building Our House on Rock written by Dennis Hamm SJ and published by The Word Among Us Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount ends with the parable of the builders on rock or sand. Doing what Jesus asks results in building a life that endures; not doing it results in disaster. The choice is ours, and it’s a scary one. How can we read these words so that we can know what Jesus meant and do it? In this book, Scripture scholar Dennis Hamm takes an in-depth look at the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew and the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke, paying special attention to the distinctive ways these two evangelists present and interpret Jesus’ teachings. Hamm helps us to hear Jesus’ words in their original cultural setting as well as in the context of the Old Testament and the Gospels. In doing so, he throws new light on these teachings and suggests what they mean for us today. This book is both informative and pastoral, helping us to realize that the “you” addressed by Jesus in the Sermon is not a lonely individual but a healed and praying community, and that the one we pray to is not a long-ago and faraway Jesus of Nazareth but our living Lord and Friend.
Book Synopsis The House That Rock Built by : Norm N. Nite
Download or read book The House That Rock Built written by Norm N. Nite and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behind-the-scenes battle for the Rock Hall For 25 years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has defined Cleveland's image as the "Rock and Roll Capital of the World." But while the Rock Hall has become an iconic landmark for the city of Cleveland and for fans of rock and roll around the world, it was just one missed phone call away from never being built in Cleveland. If the prominent singer and actress Leslie Gore hadn't contacted radio personality Norm N. Nite in August 1983, the Hall of Fame would not be in Cleveland--period. Earlier that summer, Gore had learned that the newly formed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was looking for a city to house their planned museum honoring the history of rock. Gore knew that a year earlier, Nite had pitched an idea for a similar museum, so she reached out to let him know that other figures in the music industry were working to turn his dream into a reality. Nite immediately joined the project's Rules and Nominating Committee and spearheaded the campaign to bring the museum to Cleveland. At the time, the search committee was considering several other cities, including Memphis, Detroit, and New York, but Nite argued that the city's deep historical connection to rock music through Alan Freed and the Moondog Coronation Ball made Cleveland the perfect location. He began lobbying local and state politicians, fundraising with music moguls and civic leaders, and promoting the museum to the broader Cleveland public. As fans got involved, especially with their overwhelming response to a USA Today phone poll, Nite's campaign to bring the Hall to Cleveland was ultimately successful. This book, told from Nite's insider perspective, draws on both first-person accounts and exclusive interviews with influential business leaders, government officials, and giants of the music industry. A detailed record of the Rock Hall's inception and creation, The House That Rock Built becomes a true tribute to the people who made it happen--through Herculean efforts--and to the music it celebrates.

Is it possible to sing the Lord's song in a foreign land? Christians today find themselves caught up in the massive sweep of secularizing culture. Do we have a joyful song to sing anymore? Do we know what our song has been throughout history? Could we possibly sing as a mighty choir, just perhaps igniting spiritual renewal for our world--and for each one of us as well? This book proposes the possibility of finding a new song for our time.
Book Synopsis Building a Relationship with God and with Others by : John Onu Odihi
Download or read book Building a Relationship with God and with Others written by John Onu Odihi and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world that seems to be turning away from God, author John Onu Odihi writes from his heart about the Christian life and its challenges in the modern era. Even while our culture emphasizes independence and moral relativism, Odihi is unafraid to remind us that our victory can come only through loving and trusting God, and living in obedience to him. Building a Relationship with God and with Others helps us do just that, with essays on such topics as gratitude, patience, and the mystery of God's love. But the essays go beyond the theoretical to the real dynamics in our relationship not only with God, but also with each other. Reflections on how to live out our Christian faith address forgiveness, encouragement, the value of confession, and ways to cope with fear. You'll even find an essay on the difficult challenge of how to lovingly confront someone who is in the wrong. Each section is followed by suggested biblical passages that you can return to again and again for support and reference. Throughout this book is an emphasis on the joy and fulfilment that is ours when we learn to truly love not only our neighbours but our enemies—Jesus' ultimate message as we work to bring his kingdom to this earth. Whether you're a new Christian or have been one for many years, you'll welcome this chance to learn more and to deepen your understanding of what it means to walk with God.
