Book Synopsis Hot Mixed Lime and Traditional Mortars by : Nigel Copsey
Download or read book Hot Mixed Lime and Traditional Mortars written by Nigel Copsey and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional mortars are eminently workable, effectively porous, economic in use and appropriately durable. Used in buildings for thousands of years, these materials are ideal for repair and conservation work. Unlike cement or modern hydraulic lime, their routine use would make a significant contribution in the struggle against climate change. However, despite the 1975 'lime revival' there remains a deficit in research into the most-used traditional mortars. This book seeks to redress the balance. Drawing upon historic literature, material science and industry case studies, topics covered include: a historical overview of traditional mortars; slaking and mixing hot mixed lime mortars; the essentials of pozzolans, aggregates and lime tempering; plasters, lime washes and sheltercoats, and finally, the revival of interest in the use of like-for-like and compatible mortars. A comprehensive book on the true understanding of hot mixing limes and traditional mortars for the twenty-first century. It is fully illustrated with 286 colour photographs and 11 line artworks. Nigel Copsey is an accredited conservator-restorer and works as a Research Associate in the Dept of Archaeology, University of York.

Download or read book Mortars and Cements written by L.J. Vicat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L. J. Vicat's investigations into the nature and use of limes first appeared in this English language edition in 1837 translated by Captain J. T. Smith, with the inclusion of extensive notes on developments in England at that time. Vicat's work is of immense interest and importance as it critically reviews the practices of time, sifting the good ones from the bad by careful experiment. In addition he was able to take developments in lime a stage further, describing very simple procedures which would make it possible to assess the nature of lime from any deposit encountered. The classification which he prepared is still valid today and enables the best possible use to be made of any lime, particularly for hydraulic works. Despite being first published over 100 years ago, this is a very readable volume, and it will not just be of interest to conservation professionals and construction historians but everyone involved in the use of lime in buildings.

Book Synopsis Specifications for Building Conservation by : Rory Cullen
Download or read book Specifications for Building Conservation written by Rory Cullen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Specifications for Building Conservation, the National Trust draws on a range of case studies and specifications to provide a much needed guide to specification writing for building conservation. Although traditional building accounts for approximately a quarter of all buildings in the UK, the old skills and understanding required for their care and maintenance have been increasingly eroded over the last century. As the largest heritage charity in Europe, the National Trust has a first class reputation for high standards of conservation and care, and in this three volume set, the Trust brings together a remarkable pool of expertise to guide conservation professionals and students through the process of successful specification writing. This first book focusses on the materials used for the external fabric, detailing successful approaches employed by the National Trust at some of their most culturally significant sites. A range of studies have been carefully selected for their interest, diversity and practicality; showcasing projects from stonework repairs on the magnificent Grade I listed Hardwick Hall to the re-thatching of the traditional cottages of the Holnicote Estate. Complete with a practical Conservation Management Plan checklist, this book will enable practitioners to develop their skills, allowing them to make informed decisions when working on a range of project types. This is the first practical guide to specification writing for building conservation and the advice provided by the National Trust experts will be of interest to any practitioners and students involved in building conservation, both in the UK and beyond. Profits generated from the sale of this publication will go to the National Trust Building Apprenticeship Scheme. This provides placements for traditional skills at National Trust properties.
