Book excerpt: Each year, millions of women throughout the world experience violence and abuse at the hands of their intimate partner. Abusers coercively control them by using a variety of tactics ranging from physical or sexual violence to emotional or psychological abuse. An additional tactic often used includes financial abuse in which the abuser controls the money in the family, exploits the victim’s financial standing, and interrupts her efforts to be self-sufficient. The impact of financial abuse can leave women financially trapped in the relationship with limited financial management skills, knowledge, or self-confidence. Indeed, survivors often mention financial barriers as a top reason for keeping them trapped by the abuser in the relationship. Curiously, little of the research on domestic violence has sought to either fully understand the impact of financial abuse or to determine which intervention strategies are most effective for the financial empowerment of survivors. Building Financial Empowerment for Survivors of Domestic Violence aims to address this critical knowledge gap by providing those who work with survivors of domestic violence with practical knowledge on how to empower the financial well-being and stability of survivors. Specifically, every practitioner, human service provider, criminal justice practitioner, financial manager, and corporate supervisor should be screening the women they encounter for economic abuse, and when such abuse is found, they should work with the women toward developing financial safety plans and refer survivors to financial empowerment programs to assist survivors to become free from abuse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workbook is a strong realistic starting place for current victims and survivors of domestic violence that are in a mind state of hopelessness and defeat. This book was written to activate your inner warrior, promote healing, process the deep-seated trauma of abuse, and find the necessary steps to recovery within themselves. From my experience as a survivor I remember asking myself if I could make it through my 30 day stay at the safe-house shelter. I remember there were days I wanted to go back to my abuser because it seemed impossible that I could really start my life over. Though the odds seemed slim I pressed through day by day. Each day I got stronger and began to embrace the belief that I had it in me to create a new life. In just 30 days my mind, my spirit, and my body was transformed. I left the shelter ready to take on the world and my life has never been the same. In this workbook I share with you what I did to start and stay committed to never returning. This book includes inspirational words and exercises that will help you to evaluate yourself, the effect of the abuse, and provide clarity about your situation and how you too can go from 30 days to a lifetime of an abuse free life. These exercises will prove to be instrumental in the possibility of you not returning to your abuser. In every victim lies a special, strong version of themselves. I encourage you to complete this book to its entirety and don't just stop at 30 days. Keep going until you break chains and are free from every toxic factor that held you bound in that relationship. A conqueror lives in you. In 30 days I guarantee you will start seeing that conqueror in your reflection. This book will meet you right where you are. In that feeling of hopelessness, defeat, and in that condition of depression and confusion my prayers are that this book encourages you to begin to see things in a more positive perception. Day by day look forward to your cup being filled until it overflows. Please refer to the website www.Powerafterthepain.net for additional information.

Book excerpt: This two-volume encyclopedia surveys all aspects of violence and abuse in domestic/family environments, including specific types of abuse, laws and legal issues, and the impacts of abuse. Wide-ranging and authoritative, this resource provides extensive coverage of widely recognized forms of violence and abuse in family settings, including physical, verbal, and emotional abuse of spouses and intimate partners (both female and male) as well as children. In addition, the encyclopedia scrutinizes less recognized types of violence and abuse in households, such as abuse of siblings by other siblings and abuse of parents or grandparents by children and grandchildren (both minor and adult). Family Violence and Abuse is a valuable resource for readers seeking a better understanding of the true scope and impact of these various forms of violence and abuse; important factors that contribute to incidence of family violence and abuse; and the various laws, programs, and therapy alternatives that have been created to help victims of abuse and rehabilitate offenders.

This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global economic recovery in the aftermath of the Great Recession has not been experienced equally: while the share of wealth owned by the richest 3% has grown, the share owned by the poorest 90% continues to decline, as reported by Oxfam in 2016. This wealth divide disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority communities. This book underscores the importance of financial capability and asset building (FCAB) practice, policy and research during a period when vulnerable populations face increasingly difficult economic and financial realities. At the same time, retrenchment and privatization of government-sponsored social services have eroded the safety net available for families experiencing poverty or near-poverty conditions. The proliferation of products and services available from both formal and informal financial institutions highlights the need to promote FCAB to avoid and/or recover from financial difficulties, crises and poverty. The contributors to this volume disseminate findings from interventions designed to increase financial knowledge, financial management and financial access across several vulnerable populations, including immigrant communities. Further, they demonstrate the need for culturally sensitive FCAB service delivery, considering opportunities and barriers posed by past and current life situations, experiences and environments experienced by different populations. The book is aimed at policymakers, researchers and practitioners who assist financially vulnerable people. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Community Practice.

Financial dependency and lack of financial knowledge are disincentives to leaving abusive relationships. Case studies here demonstrate that asset-building strategies can and should be integrated into advocacy on behalf of domestic violence survivors.

Luckily, many are able to escape this life—but what happens to them after? Journeys focuses on the desperately understudied topic of the resiliency of long-term (over 5 years) survivors of intimate partner violence and abuse. Drawing on participant observation research and interviews with women years after the end of their abusive relationships, author Susan L. Miller shares these women’s trials and tribulations, and expounds on the factors that facilitated these women’s success in gaining inner strength, personal efficacy, and transformation. Written for researchers, practitioners, students, and policy makers in criminal justice, sociology, and social services, Journeys shares stories that hope to inspire other victims and survivors while illuminating the different paths to resiliency and growth.

This book covers a range of issues in populations seeking services around complex financial needs and struggles, including those in the child welfare system; those with housing issues or facing homelessness; those coping with chronic and acute medical and psychiatric illnesses; those recovering from interpersonal violence; those facing recovery from incarceration; children and families involved in the child welfare system; and much more. In addition, policies will be woven in to inform the work. This book thoroughly explores research and evidence-based interventions around each population, and teaches clinicians to understand and treat financial distress holistically and empathically. This handbook will explain why understanding financial capability in these populations is so critical and how clinicians can step up their practices to meet those needs. Professionals from multiple disciplines ranging from financial therapists to social workers to financial coaches to financial planners will find this handbook eminently useful.

Book excerpt: The role of information and communication technologies as a tool for development has attracted the sustained attention of various agencies worldwide. If the gender dimensions of information and communication technologies—in terms of access and use, capacity-building opportunities, employment, and potential for empowerment—are explicitly identified and addressed, information and communication technologies can be a powerful catalyst for the political and social empowerment of women and the promotion of gender equality. ICT as a Driver of Women’s Social and Economic Empowerment contributes to the growing body of literature and present state of knowledge by offering evidence on how new information and communication technologies impact women’s economic and social empowerment and overall welfare creation leading to inclusive growth. Covering key topics such as economics, entrepreneurship, digital technologies, and inclusion, this premier reference source is ideal for industry professionals, policymakers, administrators, business owners, managers, researchers, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.
