Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces of lithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electromechanical reduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widely recognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous related research efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. This book carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings and advances on this topic.

Book excerpt: Despite reductions in the level of research activity in most fields which, for reasons of economic decline, have taken place in the U.S. during the last year or two, world progress in the fundamental aspects has continued actively. An important aspect of such recent work has been the use of nonaqueous solvents in studies on the constitution of the double-layer and electrochemical reactions. Interpretation of the behavior of electrode interfaces in such solvents demands more knowledge of the solvation properties of ions in nonaqueous media. Chapter 1 by Pad ova on "Ionic Solvation in Nonaqueous and Mixed Solvents" gives an up to date review of the present state of knowledge in this field, together with tabulations of data that are likely to be of quantitative value in further investigations of both homogeneous and heterogeneous electrochemistry in such media. Electrochemical studies of cathodic processes in nonaqueous solvents have, in recent years, revealed the role of solvated electrons. These are of interest in new approaches to reductive electro-organic synthesis. Similarly, the generation of hydrated electrons in photo cathodic processes is of great interest. In Chapter 2, by Conway, the conditions under which solvated electrons can arise in electrode processes are critically examined and the electro-organic reactions that hwe been investigated are reviewed. The supposed electro generation of hydrated electrons in the water solvent and as inter mediates in cathodic hydrogen evolution is shown to be unlikely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three works cover the entire field of formation evaluation, from basic concepts and theories, through standard methods used by the petroleum industry, on to new and exciting applications in environmental science and engineering, hydrogeology, and other fields. Designed to be used individually or as a set, these volumes represent the first comprehensive assessment of all exploration methodologies. No other books offer the breadth of information and range of applications available in this set. The first volume, Introduction to Geophysical Formation Evaluation, is the perfect introductory reference for environmental professionals without previous training in the field. It explains the fundamentals of geophysical exploration and analysis, illuminates the underlying theories, and offers practical guidance on how to use the available methodologies. General information on material behavior, porosity, tortuosity, permeability, cores, resistivity, radioactivity, and more provides a solid foundation for more advanced studies. The second volume, Standard Methods of Geophysical Formation Evaluation builds on the basic precepts presented in the first work but can be used alone as a self-contained reference. It covers all the petroleum-oriented standard methods which, until recently, have comprised the majority of applications of geophysical formation evaluation. It also points out non-hydrocarbon uses of petroleum methods. This volume provides complete practical information and instructions on using the standard exploration and evaluation methods. It presents comprehensive, painstakingly detailed instructions for resistivity, radiation, and acoustic methods. The third volume, Non-Hydrocarbon Methods of Geophysical Formation Evaluation, discusses uses of formation evaluation in environmental science and engineering, hydrogeology, and other fields outside the petroleum industry, and demonstrates how the standard methods can be adapted to these non-hydrocarbon purposes. It presents step-by-step instructions for photon, magnetic, nuclear, and acoustic methods of exploration, and gives special attention to the analytical techniques used in non-hydrocarbon exploration. Individually, each book is a complete, stand-alone reference on an important area of this changing field. Together, the three volumes provide the most complete practical compendium available on all aspects of formation evaluation.

Book excerpt: Nowadays the application of multisensor systems for the analysis of liquids and gases is becoming more and more popular in analytical chemistry. Such systems, also known as “electronic tongues” and “electronic noses” are based on various types of chemical sensors and biosensors with different transduction principles combined with multivariate data processing protocols. These instruments received significant interest due to their simplicity, low costs and the possibility to obtain reliable chemical information from complex unresolved analytical signals. A distinct feature of electronic tongues and noses is that they can be calibrated for prediction of complex integral features in samples, like e.g. taste, odor, toxicity, geographical origin, general conformity with certain standards, etc. – the tasks that otherwise would require involvement of complex analytical instrumentation, human or animal sensory panels. In the present eBook the original research and review articles in the area of multisensor approach are collected. They dedicated to the novel sensor materials development, measuring techniques evaluation, electronics, data processing protocols and practical applications. An editorial foreword article is followed by the researches authored by leading scientists in the field of chemical sensors and artificial sensing systems. With this eBook we hope to inspire further interest and new research efforts in this exciting area.
