Book excerpt: Create and maintain a high performance family office and build a legacy Family offices are business entities built to primarily support a family’s wealth. Several trillions of dollars of wealth are concentrated in a small number of these offices globally. Yet often, family offices are not successfully passed on from one generation to another, creating disruption for family members, the ecosystem of providers, and broader society. Scott Saslow is a family office principal who has experienced the building—and rebuilding—of his family office many times. Unlike many family office books written by non-family advisors, this book is written by an insider who knows what worked and what didn’t. Along with the expertise of dozens of family office principals and top service professionals, Saslow shows how to • identify a unique and compelling purpose for the family office, which engages the next generation; • manage some of the interpersonal challenges inherent when working with family members; • create high performance family offices that make a difference for family and the broader society. Written for both the new and experienced family office principal, Building a Sustainable Family Office will inform and inspire with an “insider’s view” of the opportunities and challenges of building a family office that lasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family offices are private organizations that assume the daily administration and management of a wealthy family’s personal and financial affairs. Historically, these repositories of great wealth were shrouded in secrecy, their activities conducted behind closed doors. Recently, family offices have acquired a considerably higher public profile: they represent a mere 7 percent of the world’s ultra-high-net-worth population—yet control a staggering 50 percent of the wealth. As only a select few families now hold a disproportionate amount of global wealth, there are significant social implications to how such assets are managed and used. This book provides an insider’s view for anyone looking to understand family offices and how to best serve and advise them. The veteran practitioners William I. Woodson and Edward V. Marshall offer a thorough guide to family offices: why wealthy families create them, what they do, and how to manage them effectively. They present these insights through a series of problem-based learning cases that follow a single family’s journey from the time of a significant liquidity event; through the creation, staffing, and management of their family office; and on to its succession. Each case study is supported by detailed background reference material. The cases and background materials are drawn from the authors’ practical knowledge, network of industry experts, and experience advising family offices large and small. They shed light on the unique issues that ultrawealthy families face and the solutions they adopt to address them throughout the life cycle of a family office. This book is the definitive resource for practitioners and students, as well as family principals, advisers, service providers, and all others who engage with the world of family offices.

Book excerpt: This work commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Italian Association of Family Enterprises (AIDAF). It does not adopt a retrospective perspective, nor is it a historical account. It is an essay about the future, taking the form of a dialogue between family businesses and the Italian academic community, combining scholarly rigor with pragmatism. It provides tangible points of reflection aimed at constructing and subsequently preserving the continuity and sustainability of the family-enterprise system. The dialogue is composed of twenty-five letters and their corresponding responses, organized into five sections: family, ownership, youth, business, and sustainability. The AIDAF-affiliated entrepreneurs pose inquiries on family business matters in the form of letters addressed to academics, who, in turn, provide concise essays in response. These exchanges encompass recurring issues such as generational succession, as well as more contemporary themes, such as sustainability and the management of large entrepreneurial families. The essay is not solely intended for AIDAF members; rather, it has been assembled to initiate a conversation with those who are involved with family businesses, including the new generations, entrepreneurs, managers, and professionals who collaborate with family enterprises, as well as students and enthusiasts of the subject. It is an invitation to those who harbor a curiosity about the world of family business. As in any dialogue, the hope here is to stimulate interest in continuing the exchange of perspectives, experiences, and knowledge, going beyond the pages of this book, and recognizing that the vitality and excellence of the fabric of family enterprises are fundamental for the development of a national system.

One part assessment software tool and one part companion book, the online Index allows readers to assess their family enterprise across four dimensions of sustainability, while the Manual acts both as a roadmap to analyzing their results and provides a foundation in best practices. The index asks individual family members to assess how much the family, as a unit, utilizes best practices to help build structures, decision making processes, and leadership over generations. The manual shows readers how to reflect on what’s working in their family to build and maintain sustainable wealth and how to fix what isn’t. Throughout both components, the authors emphasize the importance of human, intellectual, and social capital, as well as financial capital, as drivers to sustainability over the long haul. The Family Wealth Sustainability Toolkit: Helps affluent families and their advisors assess how well they are managing wealth now and for the future Evaluates wealth sustainability practices to help readers find out what’s working and what’s not Emphasizes the importance of human, intellectual, and social capital, as well as financial capital, in the quest for wealth sustainability Comprehensive and highly practical, The Family Wealth Sustainability Index carefully explains exactly how affluent families and their financial advisors can best utilize and prepare their wealth now and for generations to come.

Book excerpt: The green building movement has produced hundreds of “how-to” books and websites that are filled with tips about green building and what homeowners should do to go green. While helpful and informative, when it comes to making actual purchasing and installation decisions, these books do not make it any easier for a homeowner to prioritize against a budget. Here, Schifman shares her knowledge and experience for others to use in their journey toward a greener way of living. Whether the reader is building a new home or doing a minor remodel, a homeowner needs a framework by which to guide their decisions. These decisions are based on values, and the author posits that there are really only three reasons to go green: For Our Health: By building more sustainably, we reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins. For Our Wealth: By building a more durable home and being more efficient with resources like water and electricity, we reduce our monthly utility bills and ongoing maintenance expenses. For Our Soul: Collectively doing the right thing for our planet does make a difference—and that is soul-nourishing. Learn the logistics of choosing windows, insulation, appliances, and lighting. Find out about FSC certified wood and about using reclaimed materials. Here is everything you need to make your home sustainable.

This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey examines the vibrant academic literature on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing. While there is no consensus on the exact list of ESG issues, responsible investors increasingly assess stocks in their portfolios based on nonfinancial data on environmental impact (e.g., carbon emissions), social impact (e.g., employee satisfaction), and governance attributes (e.g., board structure). The objective is to reduce exposure to investments that pose greater ESG risks or to influence companies to become more sustainable. One active area of research at present involves assessing portfolio risk exposure to climate change. This literature review focuses on institutional investors, which have grown in importance such that they have now become the largest holders of shares in public companies globally. Historically, institutional investors tended to concentrate their ESG efforts mostly on corporate governance (the “G” in ESG). These efforts included seeking to eliminate provisions that restrict shareholder rights and enhance managerial power, such as staggered boards, supermajority rules, golden parachutes, and poison pills. Highlights from this section: · There is no consensus on the exact list of ESG issues and their materiality. · The ESG issue that gets the most attention from institutional investors is climate change, in particular their portfolio companies’ exposure to carbon risk and “stranded assets.” · Investors should be positioning themselves for increased regulation, with the regulatory agenda being more ambitious in the European Union than in the United States. Readers might come away from this survey skeptical about the potential for ESG investing to affect positive change. I prefer to characterize the current state of the literature as having a “healthy dose of skepticism,” with much more remaining to be explored. Here, I hope the reader comes away with a call to action. For the industry practitioner, I believe that the investment industry should strive to achieve positive societal goals. CFA Institute provides an exemplary case in its Future of Finance series (www.cfainstitute.org/research/future-finance). For the academic community, I suggest we ramp up research aimed at tackling some of the open questions around the pressing societal goals of ESG investing. I am optimistic that practitioners and academics will identify meaningful ways to better harness the power of global financial markets for addressing the pressing ESG issues facing our society.
