Book excerpt: Electric (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles (PHEV) continue to gain attention and market share, not only as options for consumers but also for corporate fleets. EVs and PHEVs can contribute to lower operating costs through reduced maintenance requirements and enhanced fuel economy. In addition, a fleet of EVs or PHEVs, when parked and aggregated in a sizeable number, can provide regulation services to the grid through the electricity stored in the vehicle's batteries. This opportunity is known as Vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G). This thesis evaluates the economics for V2G-enabled fleets to participate in the regulation services market. In order to build a business case for fleet managers, we constructed a 10-year cash flow model that compares the operating, infrastructure, and capital costs, as well as the revenue opportunities for EVs, PHEVs, and ICEs. To quantify potential revenues, we adapted a tool that the ISO New England has used to simulate the revenues of participants in the regulation market for an alternative energy pilot. We show that ICEs, while having the lowest retail value, actually have the greatest NPV due to their high operating costs and inability to participate in the regulation services market. EVs have the highest retail value, but due to their large battery size are able to provide the most regulation services. The opportunity for V2G is critical for the attractiveness of the EV. PHEVs offer lower V2G revenue opportunity than the EVs but have greater operational flexibility. We determined that V2G revenue potential is driven by the charger capacity and battery size and there are tradeoffs associated with these components. A larger battery and charger will generate more money from regulation services, but their high investment cost may outweigh these benefits. The correct combination of charger capacity, battery size, and state of charge (SOC) is important. If the charger capacity is too large and SOC too high or low, a small battery can be charged or depleted too quickly, hindering its ability to provide regulation services.

Book excerpt: This book defines and charts the barriers and future of vehicle-to-grid technology: a technology that could dramatically reduce emissions, create revenue, and accelerate the adoption of battery electric cars. This technology connects the electric power grid and the transportation system in ways that will enable electric vehicles to store renewable energy and offer valuable services to the electricity grid and its markets. To understand the complex features of this emergent technology, the authors explore the current status and prospect of vehicle-to-grid, and detail the sociotechnical barriers that may impede its fruitful deployment. The book concludes with a policy roadmap to advise decision-makers on how to optimally implement vehicle-to-grid and capture its benefits to society while attempting to avoid the impediments discussed earlier in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the operations of electric vehicles (EVs) providing frequency regulation services to the electric grid in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems. In particular, these individually-owned EVs collaboratively bid in the regulation market, coordinated by a platform that operates the network of charging equipment enabling V2G. We study how the platform determines optimal pricing incentives for drivers to plug in their EVs, taking into account their heterogeneous driving schedules. As EV adoption progresses past the nascent stage, V2G business models become more viable. V2G participation in frequency regulation provides a valuable resource to stabilize the electric grid against fluctuations between demand and supply, and complements the continued growth of clean but intermittent renewable (e.g., solar and wind) power. On the other hand, successful implementation of V2G provides another economic incentive for switching to EVs and potentially helps sustain adoption growth, especially as government subsidies phase out. Such operations are difficult to plan for, as it is important to model both the transportation (i.e., travel schedule) and energy (operations of regulation market) features of EV fleets. We model the platform's pricing optimization problem as a bilevel program: At the upper level, the platform determines hourly rebates for EVs to plug in their EVs, and capacity bids in the regulation market; At the lower level, individual travelers optimize their travel and charging schedules in response to pricing incentives. To account for uncertainties and heterogeneity in regulation market prices and travel patterns, we adopt distributionally-robust optimization techniques to formulate the problem as a mixed-integer second-order cone program, which can be efficiently solved with commercial solvers. We further derive a class of valid inequalities for the problem based on the theory of complements and substitutes of convex cost network flow problems. We conduct a computational study based on the California Household Travel Survey dataset and actual frequency regulation prices. Our results show that the ability to offer time-varying rebates and install workplace chargers can significantly improve the V2G platform's expected profits. We also find stark differences between the optimal rebate schedules under a profit-maximizing platform and the alternative model where the platform is collectively owned by the drivers. Our findings shed lights on business model design of V2G systems.

Book excerpt: The mitigation of global climate change poses one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century. Governments all around the world have set ambitious climate- and energy- specific targets that shape the development of the energy and transportation sectors. Increasing the share of renewable energies in the energy mix and substituting conventional vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) at the same time poses significant challenges for the power grid. The coupling of the energy and transportation sectors offers a promising increase in energy efficiency, as the EVs’ batteries can be used as storage for the provision of utility services by supplying power to the grid for stabilization. This is known as the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) application. Thus, suitable V2G applications can contribute to the security of energy supply while at the same time promoting electrified transportation and the integration of renewables. These applications are especially efficient in a commercial context, where the capacities of several batteries can easily be aggregated. This thesis investigates the role of IS for the electrification and V2G integration of commercial fleets. Four studies were conducted and are compiled in this dissertation that demonstrate the feasibility and provide guidelines for incorporating commercial electrified fleets as an active component of the energy economic value chain. The understanding gained enables viewing fleet electrification and V2G integration as IS enabled amplification of the energy economic value chain towards ecological sustainability.

Book excerpt: Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) have the potential to not only reduce CO2 emissions from transportation, but also serve as distributed banks of energy storage for grid operators in a service called Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G, V1G). The need for energy storage will become increasingly crucial as intermittent sources of renewable energy are integrated. Previous studies have claimed that providing V2G/V1G services to the grid will generate annual revenues on the order of $2,500 per PEV from the frequency regulation market (Kempton & Tomic, 2005a). In this relatively lucrative market, small power draws to and from the resource enable the correction of imbalances in the net load on the grid. Bids are secured independently for regulating the load down or up, allowing PEVs to manage the power in their batteries to either charge as normal (V1G), or both charge and discharge (V2G). No known prior studies include the cost of the infrastructure and market participation fees necessary to provide this service, suggesting that initial revenue estimates are optimistic at best. In order for a fleet operator to break even over the lifetime of the investment, an annual average market clearing price of $36/MW-h is necessary for V2G fleets and $6.40/MW-h is necessary for V1G fleets. The current average price for this service is $5/MW-h, and has been dropping over the last three years. Unless this price increases, the cost of V2G/V1G equipment and market participation declines substantially, or subsidies are introduced, it will be economically difficult for this service to move beyond the pilot project phase.

Book excerpt: The development of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology offers potential benefits to both electric vehicle owners and grid operators by providing frequency regulation service. Such benefits could be significant, because the vehicles are usually idle for most of the time in a day. However, it is difficult to maximize such benefits via cost-optimized on-line scheduling based on predictive real-time prices. First and foremost, this is due to the uncertainty of actual prices and the variability of prediction obtained at different time points. In addition, the energy needed for providing regulation service is unknown when making the schedule. Second, in order to participate in the frequency regulation market, an aggregator is usually needed as an interface between vehicles and grid operators. However, the optimal bidding capacity for the aggregator may conflict with the optimal schedule of individual vehicles. Last, the vehicle's ability to gain maximum profit is limited when the battery's state of charge (SOC) is close to its extreme values. To overcome those limitations, this thesis proposes a new tool for the operational management of V2G frequency regulation. The proposed tool integrates: 1) a cost-optimized predictive on-line scheduling model for individual vehicles, 2) a cost-optimized frequency regulation capacity bidding model for an aggregator, and 3) a real-time synergetic dispatch model. The scheduling model for individual vehicles is formulated as a three-stage stochastic linear program which considers the uncertainties in 1) energy and frequency regulation prices, and 2) hourly average frequency regulation signal. The advantages of the proposed tool are: 1) the proposed tool properly integrates scheduling, capacity bidding and real-time dispatch; 2) the proposed scheduling models for individual EVs and the aggregator are on-line scheduling models which take the advantage of the most recent predicted electricity prices; 3) the proposed scheduling models for individual EVs and the aggregator forms a semi-centralized scheduling schema, which overcomes the disadvantages of centralized and decentralized models; 4) the consideration of the stochastic property of the parameters helps reduce the risk associate with the uncertainty, and also increase the potential profit; 5) the proposed three-stage stochastic linear programming model for the scheduling of individual vehicles greatly reduces the computational effort required by a conventional multi-stage model; 6) the proposed heuristic solution method with the utilization of GPU for parallel computation can significantly further increase the computational efficiency; 7) the proposed real-time synergetic dispatch can properly maintain the battery's SOC within a designated range, which insures that the battery energy constraint can be eliminated from the scheduling model, and helps reduce the complexity of the scheduling model. The proposed tool is evaluated via a simulation of an arbitrary aggregator for an office garage which consists of 100 EVs. The simulation result shows that the proposed integrated tool is suitable for practical deployment.

Book excerpt: The Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) concept is a promising possibility for the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the power grid. This article presents an economic evaluation of EVs participating in the ancillary service market (primary, secondary and tertiary regulation) for the case of Germany, based on a price data set from 2011 and 2012. We examine the economic potential of nine general options to participate in the regulation market based on real-life EV specifications, connection powers and regulation energy prices. Results show that in the most profitable case a maximum average yearly profit of 730.31 Euro per vehicle is possible for negative regulation with payment direction TSO to provider in the secondary regulation market. Furthermore a sensitivity analysis is performed for all of the analyzed participation scenarios in order to identify crucial parameters for a possible V2G implementation. Major parameters for the successful implementation of V2G are the provided power per vehicle, the time an EV is available to the grid and the variable energy storage costs it incurs.

Abstract: There are unique challenges and opportunities related to the integration of electric vehicles into the future power grid, especially the modern distribution grid since electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities and fast-charging stations are usually tied to low-voltage and medium-voltage power networks. The grid-connected EVs, if properly controlled, can operate as distributed energy storage and provide various ancillary services, such as peak shaving, fast-response reserve capacity, frequency regulation, voltage control and reactive supports. The purpose of this thesis is to integrate EVs to the power grid and provides suitable ancillary services to improve the grid reliability and stability. The larger future penetration of EVs and renewable energies is also taken into account to develop the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) control scheme with the constraints of EV charging and communication infrastructures. The main contents include: V2G mathematical model and system configuration; impact evaluation of EV integration and the V2G control framework; energy scheduling of EVs integration; V2G dynamic regulation services; control method of EV aggregator for dispatching a fleet of EVs; and the evaluation of V2G control scheme and hardware-in-the-loop experimental system design. In the thesis, the impact of EV charging demand on the conventional distribution grid is firstly estimated to reveal the negative effects of the arbitrary EV charging and the necessity to control the EV charging process. The potential benefits EVs can bring into the power grid support are discussed and a V2G control framework is proposed to perform the V2G optimization and various regulation services. The current power electronics applied EV charging facilities and communication network are integrated into the V2G operation in the future distribution grid with microgrid and smaller installation of renewable generation units. Next, mathematical model of V2G power control is formulated. Two optimization methods are proposed to schedule the EV charging and discharging energy to minimize the power losses and the operating cost while satisfying the mobility needs and the power system limitations. Subsequently, the dynamic regulation of V2G power is investigated to unleash the potential of EVs to provide multiple ancillary services simultaneously. In addition to V2G optimal energy scheduling, EVs can also be employed for dynamic power regulation which requires the fast response to the instantaneous imbalance between the power supply and demand. V2G power is controlled to mitigate the power fluctuation caused by the intermittent wind energy resources, and thus stabilize the system frequency and voltage. Finally, an EV-centric hybrid energy storage system is proposed, which combines the merits of V2G operation and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) to enhance the power quality and system frequency stability. The critical issues in V2G applications are summarized in the end. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5185942 Subjects: Electric vehicles Smart power grids

This book was released on 2011 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) into the transportation system will provide both opportunities and challenges for those who own the vehicles and power systems operators. The opportunities come in the form of the ability to provide vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services including peak load reduction and frequency regulation. Utilizing these services can provide profits for the vehicle owners, cost savings for the grid operators, and reduced air pollution. The primary goal of this study is to analyze these benefits from the viewpoint of the individual vehicle owner. It is found that there is little financial incentive when V2G services are used for peak reduction. There is much greater potential for financial return when V2G services are used to provide frequency regulation, likely enough to incentivize many people to participate in such a program. Proposed in this paper is a system that combines these V2G services into a single program, which could have the effect of ensuring profits for the individual, while still providing cost-saving opportunities for grid operators, and emission reductions during the times when it is needed most. In addition to the opportunities brought about by increased penetration of PHEVs, there are challenges as well. This comes mainly in the form of increased demand for electricity. The possible effects on electricity load of increased PHEV penetration and V2G participation are analyzed in this paper. Furthermore, an econometric model is used to predict the effect of increased electricity load on electricity price at each hour of the day. It is found that increased PHEV penetration can (in a regulated charging scheme) increase electricity loads and prices during the hours when electricity loads and prices are currently lowest. Furthermore, if V2G technology is used for peak reduction, electricity loads and prices can be reduced during peak electricity demand hours. The overall effect of this is a flattening of the daily electricity load and price profiles, which is likely to be beneficial for power system operators. The flattening of the daily electricity price profile has the effect of reducing profits when V2G technology is used for peak reduction because it raises the price during charging (buying electricity) and lowers the price during discharging (selling electricity). While the analysis presented here works within the framework of the current electricity markets, it is possible that the best use for V2G technology could come in a program that allows grid operators to dispatch the stored energy for the optimal purpose (e.g.: peak reduction, regulation, reserves, ramping) at any period of time. This would require a different type of market structure, possibly even a separate market for storage, in which V2G services could participate.

Book excerpt: Electric Vehicle Integration in a Smart Microgrid Environment The growing demand for energy in today’s world, especially in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, has been met with massive exploitation of fossil fuels, resulting in an increase in environmental pollutants. In order to mitigate the issues arising from conventional internal combustion engine-powered vehicles, there has been a considerable acceleration in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Research has shown that the impact of fossil fuel use in transportation and surging demand in power owing to the growing EV charging infrastructure can potentially be minimalized by smart microgrids. As EVs find wider acceptance with major advancements in high efficiency drivetrain and vehicle design, it has become clear that there is a need for a system-level understanding of energy storage and management in a microgrid environment. Practical issues, such as fleet management, coordinated operation, repurposing of batteries, and environmental impact of recycling and disposal, need to be carefully studied in the context of an ageing grid infrastructure. This book explores such a perspective with contributions from leading experts on planning, analysis, optimization, and management of electrified transportation and the transportation infrastructure. The primary purpose of this book is to capture state-of-the-art development in smart microgrid management with EV integration and their applications. It also aims to identify potential research directions and technologies that will facilitate insight generation in various domains, from smart homes to smart cities, and within industry, business, and consumer applications. We expect the book to serve as a reference for a larger audience, including power system architects, practitioners, developers, new researchers, and graduate-level students, especially for emerging clean energy and transportation electrification sectors in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Book excerpt: The UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, with its key topics of global warming and deteriorating air quality, will speed up the advance of electric mobility. CO2-neutral and zero-emission mobility require electricity to be generated from regenerative sources of energy. Power generation from wind and solar energy, however is dependent on the weather and is therefore not stable. The irregularities that occur in nature can result in unacceptable voltage fluctuations in the power grid. For that reason, the availability of highly flexible loads and storage systems is becoming particularly important. Electric vehicles, with their grid-relevant properties as controllable power consumers and electricity storage systems, could help to stabilize future power grids.

The study involved data-logging of three conventional gasoline-powered light-duty vehicles and three electric vehicle alternatives during the course of normal fleet service for one year, and then conducting a comprehensive life cycle analysis of the cost of ownership based on the data gathered. In each case, the electric vehicle was determined to be the lower-cost option, with operational cost savings offsetting incremental price premiums to deliver a payback in just a few years. Moreover, even when emissions from the generation of electricity (upstream emissions) were considered, electric vehicles produced 21 times less carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year than their gasoline-powered alternatives.

Book excerpt: The electrification of shared fleets offers numerous benefits, including the reduction of local emissions of pollutants, which leads to ecological improvements such as the improvement of air quality. Electric Vehicles in Shared Fleets considers a holistic concept for a socio-technical system with a focus on three core areas: integrated mobility solutions, business models for economic viability, and information systems that support decision-making for the successful implementation and operation of electric vehicles in shared fleets. In this book, we examine different aspects within these areas including multimodal mobility, grid integration of electric vehicles, shared autonomous electric vehicle services, relocation strategies in shared fleets, and the challenge of battery life of electric vehicles. Insights into the future of transport are provided, which is predicted to be shared, autonomous, and electric. This will require the expansion of the charging infrastructure to provide adequate premises for the electrification of transportation and to create market demand.
