Book excerpt: Take a deep dive into the TV series that brought us all into the Buffyverse—including an episode guide, a trivia quiz, cast bios, and more! It’s been more than a decade since Buffy Summers first walked into the Sunnydale High library and came face-to-face with her Watcher, who told her she was the Chosen One who would save the world from vampires. In the seven seasons that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was on TV, we watched her kill her true love (but he got better), graduate high school (by blowing it up), discover she had a sister (who . . . uh . . . was always there?), sacrifice her own life (but she got better), watch her sidekicks become heroes (and villains), and, essentially, grow up. Bite Me!, Nikki Stafford’s critical analysis of the show, was one of the bestselling and most critically acclaimed books on Buffy when it was released in 2002. Current up to season 6, the book examined Buffy’s development, and outlined the mythical, religious, and historical backgrounds to the episodes. Nikki’s guide to season 7 appeared in her Angel book, but there was never one place where fans could get their Buffy fix all in one place. Until now. Revised and updated, the 10th Buffyversary edition of Bite Me! contains all seven seasons of this groundbreaking series, chronicles what happened to all of its stars, gives the background story to why the series ended and what legacy it has had, and even contains information about the new Buffy “season eight” comic book series from Dark Horse. Bite Me! is the definitive guide for all Buffy fans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intense and continuing popularity of the long-running television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) has long been matched by the range and depth of the academic critical response. This volume, the first devoted to the show's imaginative and widely varied use of music, sound, and silence, helps to develop an increasingly important and inadequately covered area of research - the many roles of music in contemporary television. In addressing this significant gap, this book provides an exemplary overview of the functions of music and sound in the interpretation of a television show. This is done through analyses that focus on scoring and source music, the title theme, the music production process, the critically acclaimed musical episode (voted number 13 in Channel Four's One Hundred Greatest Musicals), the symbolic and dramatic use of silence, and the popular reception of the show by its international fan base. In keeping with contemporary trends in the study of popular musics, a variety of critical approaches are taken from musicology, cultural studies, and media and communication studies, specifically employing critique, musical analysis, industry studies, and hermeneutics.

Book excerpt: Border Town Blood is a contemporary horror novel in three acts. "But I'm not really into horror," you may say. Well, Border Town Blood is like an excellent submarine sandwich (or a po' boy for my friends in the Deep South); there is something in it for everyone: horror, fantasy, romance, inspiration and even a little comic relief tossed in for good measure. Border Town Blood is set in a geographically accurate Fort Smith. I have always believed that fear thrives on the familiar. Television programs like The Twilight Zone were much more frightening and disturbing for their real world setting. Sure having a homicidal alien chasing someone around a spaceship is scary; but having a horde of zombies rise from the cemetery you drive past every day at dusk is terrifying! In Border Town Blood, I have taken great pains to describe local geography and local businesses exactly where they are. To paraphrase the great American storyteller Louis L'Amour, if I tell you there's a water hole somewhere, if you follow my directions, you will end up with a cool drink. Of course, it has been necessary to fictionalize most of the names of the businesses and people, but there is still a barbecue place where Nealson's stands, a record storage business where Centralized Record Storage stands and, as of January 2009, the Mallalieu Church still stands right where Ellis left it. I am confident that Mayor Ray Baker would love to have the fans of Border Town Blood visit Fort Smith and spend a day or two driving around on a Border Town Blood tour. Border Town Blood is based on actual historic events and authentic Native American mythology. Many of today's most successful television programs brag that their stories are "ripped from the headlines." Border Town Blood takes that premise and stands it on its head. The stories in Border Town Blood are ripped from the history books. The Trail of Tears is one of the most shameful events in our country's history. The carnival atmosphere of the public hangings in 19th Century Fort Smith were probably more raucous than I portray them. The multiple waves of refugees and displaced persons referenced by Alice Harvey were actual events. In the forties, Camp Chaffee was a German prisoner of war camp. Fort Chaffee was the Middle American staging ground for fifty-one thousand Hmong, Indochinese, and Vietnamese men, women and children in the seventies; and in the eighties over twenty-five thousand Cuban refugees passed through Fort Smith. Over ten thousand refugees from Hurricane Katrina were housed in Fort Chaffee in 2005. What is so special about Fort Smith that, time and again, the disenfranchised and the footloose end up here? Border Town Blood poses an answer to that and many other questions. Native American mythology is a rich and largely untapped seedbed of tales and legends. Border Town Blood borrows a few of these myths and weaves them into a tapestry that is rooted in history and flies high in the firmament of modern imagination. Tsul Kalu and Jumlin are genuine figures in Native American pantheons. Shapeshifters, dreamwalkers and warriors mighty enough to slay gods are part and parcel of Native American oral tradition. Border Town Blood tells its story through the eyes of those experiencing the action. Unlike the bird's eye view of many third-person novels or the solo inside-out view of a first-person narrative, Border Town Blood puts you the reader inside the heads and hearts of the stories' characters. You get to know the characters, their feelings and their motivations through their own eyes: unvarn

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in all the world, to find them where they gather and to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers... Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Carnival of Souls: There is definitely something not quite right about the Travelling Carnival. When a once-shy pair of homely twins begin to parade around Sunnydale High like divas, Buffy and the others decide to investigate. But soon it becomes apparent that the price of admission is higher than they imagined. Willow is consumed by envy, Cordelia by greed, and Xander by gluttony. Angel reveals a dangerous new persona, while dark anger rises in Giles. More powerful still is the blinding pride that threatens to overwhelm Buffy and destroy all those she loves... Blooded: Chirayoju, a vampire of Chinese lore, and Sanno, the legendary Japanese Mountain King, have been locked in deadly battle for centuries. An ancient curse imprisoned the spirits of these two warriors in an antique sword; until the sword arrives in Sunnydale. Freed by accident, Chirayoju searches for a host body that will allow him to continue wreaking havoc among the living and the dead. Now Buffy's on the trail of this legendary vampire... a bloody trail that leads straight through the heart of the Buffy-Xander-Willow triangle. One Thing or Your Mother: It's tough being a teenage Slayer. On the verge of failing her junior year thanks to the annoying Principal Snyder, who seems to be acting even stranger than usual lately, Buffy agrees to meet with a tutor… one who may not have her best interests in mind. Not helping her studies is the fact that recently she's been exhausted, waking up each morning feeling more tired than she did the night before. Fighting off exhaustion, Buffy learns that Principal Snyder is the target of a sleep deprivation spell that has taken over Sunnydale. As sleep takes hold of the citizens of Sunnydale, Buffy begins to realize that unless she breaks the spell soon, the nightmare is just beginning.
