Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two feisty females move to the seaside. At last, a life of fun with candy floss, penny arcades, fish 'n' chips, and ice-creams. Even the scary seagulls will not stop them. Pam and Martha are outwardly mature, but the rebellious teenager is close to the surface. Walking on the tightrope between sensible and sassy is a tricky balancing act. Pam is not ready to abdicate her title of Party Queen. Martha is carrying a weight on her shoulders which is agonizing. Pam shares a thought about their flight to the fresh air by the shore - "We carry all our baggage with us, and they're even heavier than my rucksack." Martha cannot resist: "Nothing's heavier than your rucksack!" Walks along the coast revitalise and reawaken feelings buried long ago. The beach is filled with pebbles and framed by brightly coloured designs - "Come on Maeve, let's go and look at the Beach Hutches!" says Pam. "No, Aunty Pam, they are called Beach Huts." "I know," said Pam, "but it sounds more fun, don't you think?" The breeze blows away a few of the cobwebs but the tide times change. As the clocks go back the portrait of the sun set is mesmerising.

Book Synopsis The Latino Migration Experience in North Carolina, Revised and Expanded Second Edition by : Hannah Gill
Download or read book The Latino Migration Experience in North Carolina, Revised and Expanded Second Edition written by Hannah Gill and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now thoroughly updated and revised—with a new chapter on the Dreamer movement and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA)—this book offers North Carolinians a better understanding of their Latino neighbors, illuminating rather than enflaming debates on immigration. In the midst of a tumultuous political environment, North Carolina continues to feature significant in-migration of Mexicans and Latin Americans from both outside and inside the United States. Drawing on the voices of migrants as well as North Carolinians from communities affected by migration, Hannah Gill explains how larger social forces are causing demographic shifts, how the state is facing the challenges and opportunities presented by these changes, and how migrants experience the economic and social realities of their lives. Gill makes connections between our hometowns and the globalization of people, money, technology, and culture by shedding light on the many diverse North Carolina residents who are such a vital part of the state's population but are often unrecognized in many ways. This book is essential for everyone, including students and teachers, who wants to understand what is at stake for all parties and wants to work toward solutions.

Book Synopsis Calypso and Other Music of Trinidad, 1912-1962 by :
Download or read book Calypso and Other Music of Trinidad, 1912-1962 written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calypso, with its diverse cultural heritage, was the most significant Caribbean musical form from World War I to Trinidad and Tobago Independence in 1962. Though wildly popular in mid-1950s America, Calypso--along with other music from "the island of the hummingbird"--has been largely neglected or forgotten. This first-ever discography of the first 50 years of Trinidadian music includes all the major artists, as well as many obscure performers. Chronological entries for 78 rpm recordings give bibliographical references, periodicals, websites and the recording locations. Rare field recordings are cataloged for the first time, including East Indian and Muslim community performances and Shango and Voodoo rites. Appendices give 10-inch LP (78 rpm), 12-inch LP (33 1/3 rpm), extended play (ep) and 7-inch single (45) listings. Non-commercial field recordings, radio broadcasts and initially unissued sessions also are listed. The influence of Trinidadian music on film, and the "Calypso craze" are discussed. Audio sources are provided. Indexes list individual artists and groups, recording titles and labels.

Book excerpt: More effectively meet the diverse literacy needs of the growing Latino population by learning how to evaluate and select quality Latino children's literature. Latinos are the fastest growing and largest ethnic minority in the United States. The number of Latino children is at a historic high. As a result, librarians and teachers in the United States must know how to meet the informational, cultural, and traditional literacy needs of this student demographic group. An ideal way to overcome this challenge is by providing culturally accurate and authentic children's literature that represents the diversity of the Latino cultures. Much more than simply a topical bibliography, this book details both historical and current practices in educating Latino children; explains why having quality Latino children's literature in classrooms and libraries is necessary for the ethnic identity development of Latino children; and offers a historical overview of Latino children's literature in America. Web resources of interest to educators working with Latino children are also included.
