Book excerpt: Designing Education Policy for Sub-Saharan African Countries is the culmination of five years of extensive research and analysis of global educational systems as they compare with the challenges and opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a lens on Southern Cameroons. As African youths demonstrate purpose and a desire for sovereignty and self-governance, quality education remains critical in realizing these aspirations. Drawing from over 35 years of experience as an educator on various continents, Elizabeth Bifuh-Ambe courageously confronts the complex interactions of education with colonialism and other systems that perpetuate inequalities within the continent. She highlights the transformative power of education as a source of cultural pride and a conduit for socio-economic development that is essential if Africa must break free from historical patterns of dependency in the ongoing fight for genuine independence.

Book excerpt: The sacred forest is a concrete place with a rich symbolic meaning. For the Laimbwe ethnic group of the North West Region of Cameroon, it is the centre of the social life, around which the people organize their matrilineal system. Henry Kam Kah describes the origin, development and the changes in matriliny as a gender construction from an insider point of view. Using written material and interviews with 150 persons, he shows how the system overcame all the various challenges since the 18th century, especially the rejection of matriliny by the colonial powers and Christian missionaries. With this study, Henry Kam Kah calls into question different prejudices of a Eurocentric gender research which believes in the dominance of patriarchal structures and the decline of other gender systems under the impact of global influence and pressure. Henry Kam Kah is Senior Lecturer at the Department of History of the University of Buea (Cameroon).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secessionism perseveres as a complex political phenomenon in Africa, yet often a more in-depth analysis is overshadowed by the aspirational simplicity of pursuing a new state. Using historical and contemporary approaches, this edited volume offers the most exhaustive collection of empirical studies of African secessionism to date. The respected expert contributors put salient and lesser known cases into comparative perspective, covering Biafra, Katanga, Eritrea and South Sudan alongside Barotseland, Cabinda, and the Comoros, among others. Suggesting that African secessionism can be understood through the categories of aspiration, grievance, performance, and disenchantment, the book's analytical framework promises to be a building block for future studies of the topic.
