Book excerpt: This is the story of how the author realized Bodh Gaya of today isn't the Bodh Gaya where Lord Buddha had attained enlightenment. It is somewhere else. The Bodhi tree is long gone dead. The ruins of today's Nalanda isn't the Nalanda which Huen Tsang had visited in the 6th century A.D. The Chinese travelers Nalanda was razed to the ground. The only proof of where it once stood is a Naga lake and an eighty foot high bronze statue of the Buddha buried under the ground. Lord Buddha helped the author locate it. The latter broke the code of Huen Tsang's Indian mispronunciation causing him to successfully follow in the Chinese traveler's footsteps. He discovered the villages of Mudgaliputra and Sariputra who were both favorite disciples of Lord Buddha. He discovered two stupas in each village. One was an Ashokan Stupa to mark the place of their birth and the other to mark the spot where their mortal remains are enshrined. He discovered and filmed the ruins of the stupa which marked the spot where the Buddha met king Bimbisara after he attained enlightenment. And finally and the most important, he discovered who the Shakyas were in modern day India. Other important discoveries are the Pigeon monastery and Sariputras favorite disciple's stupa and village. All this in one exciting book.

Book excerpt: This book is actually a copy of the report the author submitted to the archaeological Survey of India pertaining to the epic journey a Chinese pilgrim and scholar accomplished in the seventh century in India. His name was Huen Tsang. The author regards himself the first person in the world who has successfully broken the code of Chinese and British mis-pronunciations and mis-translations of Indian words. He realized all the holy Buddhist sites were mis-identified and somewhere else. These include Sravasti, Sarnath, Lumbini, Khushinagar, Bodh Gaya, Nalanda and Vaishali. Huen Tsang goes to a place called 'Patalgunga Chatti' which he mispronounces as 'Po-li-ni-see'. The British translator translates it as Varanasi, thereby triggering a wild search for stupas there. They found one in Sarnath and identified it as the stupa marking the spot where the Buddha first preached. Huen Tsang went to 'Pidhauli' and mis-pronounced it as'Fe-she-li' which the British translator deciphered as 'Vaishali' triggering a search for the city in the wrong spot. Similarly Huen Tsang went to Rudhauli and mispronounced it as the 'La-fa-ni' garden. The British translator translated it as 'Lumbini'. They found a village called Rummindei and rechristened it as 'Lumbini'. Once again Huen Tsang goes to Raxaul where, to the north, the Buddha died. Huen Tsang mispronounced it as 'Kiu-se-kie-na-lo'. It was certainly a case of a Chinese desperately trying to write 'Rax' of Raxaul in Chinese. The British translator translates it as 'Khushinagar.' British orientalists found a sleeping Buddha in a town called 'Kasia bazar' and re-christian'ed it as 'Khushinagar.' There are plenty more examples. The worst is Nalanda. There was never a sanghramma by that name. The British translator simply translates 'Mahmuda' as Nalanda. Mahmuda is the short form of 'Maha-Muda' which simply means a tough topic for debates. An aspiring entrant to the sanghramma had to win a debate with the gateman to be allowed to enter. The author saw through these mistakes and corrected them. He identified the real stupas. So this is for Buddhists. Check out the spots identified. "THE BUDDHA IS PATIENTLY WAITING FOR YOU."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Chinaman sleeping in the Baladitya vihara in Nalanda has a dream. Manjushri takes him to the roof of the vihara and points at Nalanda burning around him. He signals him to get out of Jambudwipa. Huen Tsang packs his belongings, takes his manuscripts, takes the leave of the king and leaves Jambudwipa, I mean India. He leaves and Jihadists enter. They indulge in wanton killing. As Manjusri predicted Nalanda burned, other cities burned, Buddhists were slaughtered, and scriptures were burnt and done away with. Brahmins went silent on the Buddhist story giving the felling blow to a lovely religion. But far away the Chinaman had stored his Jambudwipa in a temple waiting for a day when his own ghost would be back to grab a non historian, a local, a businessman by the arm and make him search for his lost Jambudwipa. Ashok Kumar Singh rolled out of the closet. The result A rock and roll crazy story of a non Historian challenging the worlds Buddhist and Indian historians on the authenticity of their finds. There never was a place called Kapilavastu, Nalanda, Khushinagar, Lumbini and Sarnath. These were names concocted by Samuel Beal when he translated Huen Tsangs book. This is why these places were never found. British historians simply superimposed these names over the original ones which had nothing to do with Buddhism. The real places were somewhere else. The result was the world failed to see that India was following Indian Buddhism, the real Buddhism the Buddha propagated. India never rejected Buddhism. Only the world, the historians, the Indians themselves couldn't see it. This happened because of the loss of Buddhist scriptures and the creation of two British colonial names. Hinduism and Buddhism. This created two distinctly separate entities. These words never existed in ancient India which caused Indians to scratch their heads and think, "What the hell, what is Buddhism doing in Bihar? How the hell did it happen? We are Hindus." Buddhists in turn yelled and hollered, "The Hindus kicked out Buddhism." Total confusion. Both simply didn't understand each other. The twain didn't meet.Buddhists were searching for Buddhism in India through eyes of their culture. Tibetans were looking for Gomphas and prayer wheels. Others were looking for something else. They failed to see Buddhism through the eyes of Indian culture. The Buddha forbade hurting any living being. He was dead serious on kindness and vegetarianism. This is why most of north India is vegetarian. The Buddha forbade statue worship and worship to himself. This can be seen in temples of village deities all across north India. They have only 3 or 5 or 7 tiny mud stupas connected to a Buddhist name of a disciple. And Brahmins don't pray in most of them. It is the original Indian name and not the mispronounced Buddhist one. The result is both names failed to recognize each other. What went wrong Confusion due to subsequent invasions of India and Sril Lanka was the cause. Muslims burnt Buddhist texts in India, Portuguese burnt Buddhist texts in Sri Lanka.-Result- no written material was left. Written material was scattered across the east with twangy languages mispronouncing Indian words in various twangy ways. At last the savior comes. It was the era that went down famously in history as the rape of the Nile. Grave robbers and historians came to India to try their luck in the Buddhist story. But there were no scriptures. So they collected the mis pronounced scriptures from across the world and tried to make sense of the mispronounced Indian names. They mispronounced them further creating Indian words in the process. A perfect example is Samuel Beals translation of Huen Tsangs book. He failed to decipher the real words and happily created new ones which the world lapped up. The real places are somewhere else. This is what I and Huen Tsang have straightened out. It is a partnership I cherish.

Book excerpt: This is a revisiting of the north Indian planes exactly on Huen Tsangs footsteps. This book is a detailed report by the author to the 'Archaeological Survey Of India' of all the spots he visited. Basically all the present day major Buddhist sites of Up and Bihar don't tally with Huen Tsangs travelogue, "Si-Yu-Ki Buddhist Records Of The Western World." . After chasing Huen Tsang the author realized British historians who did the searching and identifying went way off mark. According to Huen Tsang Angulimalya's stupa, the Jetavan, and Maha Prajapati Gautamis sanghdharma was on the eastern banks of the Ghaghra river north west of Bahraich. The place name is Garethi Gurudutta which Huen Tsang mispronounces as 'Shi-lo-fu-shi-ti' which the British take at face value and decipher the word as'Sravasti'. Koteshwar Nath is mispronounced by Huen Tsang as 'Kie-pi-lo-fa-su-to' which the British decipher as Kapilavastu and cause the Nepalese to claim the site of the Buddhas birthplace. Huen Tsang then mispronounces Rudhauli as 'La-fa-ni' causing the British to decipher it as Lumbini. They change a villages name from Rummindei to Lumbini according to what they suspected Huen Tsang meant. Huen Tsang once more mispronounces Raxaul as 'Kiu-se-na-kie-lo'. Chinese have a tough time pronouncing 'x' and 'Ra' of Raxaul according to the Indian pronunciation. The British deciphered 'Kiu-se-na-kie-lo' as 'Khushinagar' and changed a places name from Kasia Bazaar to Khushinagar simply on the basis of finding a sleeping Buddha there. Huen Tsang happily goes on mispronouncing Indian names with British historians happily deciphering them according to what they thought were the original Indian words. So the village of 'Pidhauli' is mispronounced as 'Fe-she-li' which the British decipher as Vaishali and search for ruins near Lalgunj village. Similarly 'Patalganga Chatti' is mispronounced by Huen Tsang as 'Po-lo-ni-see' which the British translator deciphers as Varanasi so the British search for ruins in that area. They find some in Sarnath and proudly announce this is the stupa where the Buddha first preached. Unfortunately the stupa in Sarnath isn't an Ashokan stupa. Neither was Rajgir spared. Huen Tsang calls the place where King Bimbisara makes his new capitol 'Ho-li-shi-ki-li-hi'. That is Horidih village of today five km west of Rajgir. The British decipher 'Ho-li-shi-ki-li-hi' as 'Rajgrih'. There is no verbal resemblance in these two words at all. The result is none of the major Buddhist stupas have been discovered till date. Now this doesn't mean the author is demeaning British historians. They were a wonderful lot who got the ball rolling. Unfortunately they were hampered by the era in which they worked and the fact they were foreigners with little knowledge of local languages and customs. But in the little space allowed to them they worked hard as though they knew no restraint. Unfortunately they were all off the mark. This report to the Archaeological Survey Of India pinpoints all the original spots Huen Tsanhg visited. The author literally exhumed the Buddha in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Penner takes a new look at the classic stories of the life of the Buddha. In the first part of the book, he presents a full account of these stories, drawn from various texts of Theravada Buddhism, the Buddhism of South and Southeast Asia. Penner allots one chapter to each of the major milestones in Buddha's life, with titles such as: Birth and Early Life, Flight from the Palace, Enlightenment and Liberation, Last Watch and Funeral. In the process, he brings to the fore dimensions of the myth that have been largely ignored by western scholarship. In Part II, Penner offers his own original interpretations of the legends. He takes issue with Max Weber's assertion that "Buddhism is an other-worldly ascetic religion," a point of view that remains dominant in the received tradition and in most contemporary studies of Buddhism. His central thesis is that the "householder" is a necessary element in Buddhism and that the giving of gifts, which creates merit and presupposes the doctrine of karma, mediates the relation between the householder and the monk. Penner argues that the omission of the householder - in his view one-half of what constitutes Buddhism as a religion - is fatal for any understanding of Buddha's life or of the Buddhist tradition. This boldly revisionist and deeply learned work will be of interest to a wide range of scholarly and lay readers.

Book excerpt: Northern Japan is home to an ancient, esoteric tradition of self-mummifying Buddhist monks, little known to the outside world. Long after death, these ascetics continue to be revered as Living Buddhas. This first English-language work on the subject recounts the process by which these monks starve themselves for a decade, bury themselves alive with only a small breathing tube, and meditate until death. After three years, the mummified body is exhumed and displayed. The biographies of various monks are presented within, as is an examination of the religious beliefs involved, an amalgamation of three distinct religious traditions. Also explored is the role of asceticism in religion, and beliefs about life and death shared by the Buddhist sects involved in self-mummification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John S. Strong unravels the storm of influences shaping the received narratives of two iconic sacred objects. Bodily relics such as hairs, teeth, fingernails, pieces of bone—supposedly from the Buddha himself—have long served as objects of veneration for many Buddhists. Unsurprisingly, when Western colonial powers subjugated populations in South Asia, they used, manipulated, redefined, and even destroyed these objects to exert control. In The Buddha’s Tooth, John S. Strong examines Western stories, from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, surrounding two significant Sri Lankan sacred objects to illuminate and concretize colonial attitudes toward Asian religions. First, he analyzes a tale about the Portuguese capture and public destruction, in the mid-sixteenth century, of a tooth later identified as a relic of the Buddha. Second, he switches gears to look at the nineteenth-century saga of British dealings with another tooth relic of the Buddha—the famous Daḷadā enshrined in a temple in Kandy—from 1815, when it was taken over by English forces, to 1954, when it was visited by Queen Elizabeth II. As Strong reveals, the stories of both the Portuguese tooth and the Kandyan tooth reflect nascent and developing Western understandings of Buddhism, realizations of the cosmopolitan nature of the tooth, and tensions between secular and religious interests.

Book excerpt: The most accessible and informative version of the Buddhist classic available in English, with instruction in meditation, illuminating commentary, and guidance in the practical use of the prayers The so-called “Tibetan Book of the Dead” has been renowned for centuries as a cornerstone of Buddhist wisdom and religious thought. More recently, it has become highly influential in the Western world for its psychological insights into the processes of death and dying—and what they can teach us about the ways we live our lives. It has also been found to be helpful in the grieving process by people who have recently lost their loved ones. Composed in the eighth century C.E., it is intended to prepare the soul for the trials and transformations of the afterworld. Its profound message is that the art of dying is as important as the art of living. Drawing on Tibetan spiritual traditions, it shows us the workings of the mind in its various manifestations—terrifying and comforting, wrathful and beautiful—which appear more clearly after death in the consciousness of the deceased. By recognizing these manifestations, we can attain a state of enlightenment, both in this existence and in the existence to come. This authoritative translation preserves the form and spirit of the original and was prepared especially for Western readers by Robert A. F. Thurman, one of the most prominent Tibetan scholars in America and a close associate of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s.

Was his demise self-inflicted, accidental, an assassination or due to natural causes? The author contends that during this incident Siddhartha Gautama may have been the leader of Babylon's Magi, an interfaith order that assumes governance of the region. The situation explodes when Darius the Great seizes the throne. Simultaneously the Magi Order is purged as Siddhartha, prince of the Saka nation, heads back east to the Indus. Could this event have inspired the creation of Buddhism as a pacifist movement dedicated to the pursuit of self-transformation, goodwill, and universal compassion? The Buddha from Babylon: The Lost History and Cosmic Vision of Siddhartha Gautama uncovers new evidence that solves this ages-old mystery and discovers Babylonian influences in the Buddha's revelations.

Book excerpt: Many valuable books have been written by Eastern and Western scholars, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike, to present the life and teachings of the Buddha to those who are interested in Buddhism. Amongst them one of the most popular works is still The Light of Asia by Sir Edwin Arnold. Many Western truth-seekers were attracted to Buddhism by this world-famous poem. Congratulations of Eastern and Western Buddhists are due to the learned writers on their laudable efforts to enlighten the readers on the Buddha-Dhamma. This new treatise is another humble attempt made by a member of the Order of the Sangha, based on the Pāli Texts, commentaries, and traditions prevailing in Buddhist countries, especially in Ceylon.
