Book Synopsis From Poliziano to Machiavelli by : Peter Godman
Download or read book From Poliziano to Machiavelli written by Peter Godman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Godman presents the first intellectual history of Florentine humanism from the lifetime of Angelo Poliziano in the later fifteenth century to the death of Niccolo Machiavelli in 1527. Making use of unpublished and rare sources, Godman traces the development of philological and official humanism after the expulsion of the Medici in 1494 up to and beyond their restoration in 1512. He draws long overdue attention to the work of Marcello Virgilio Adriani--Poliziano's successor in his Chair at the Studio and Machiavelli's colleague at the Chancery of Florence. And he examines in depth the intellectual impact of Savonarola and the relationship between secular and religious and oral and print cultures. Godman shows a complex reaction of rivalry and antagonism in Machiavelli's approach to Marcello Virgilio, who was the leading Florentine humanist of the day. But he also demonstrates that Florentine humanists shared a common culture, marked by a preference for secular over religious themes and by constant anxiety about surviving and prospering in the city's dangerous political climate. The book concludes with an appendix, drawn from previously incaccessible archives, about the censorship of Machiavelli by the Inquisition and the Index. From Poliziano to Machiavelli adds new depth to the intellectual history of Forence during his most dynamic period in its history. Originally published in 1998. Book Synopsis The Poetry of Statius by : Johannes Jacobus Louis Smolenaars
Download or read book The Poetry of Statius written by Johannes Jacobus Louis Smolenaars and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman poet P. Papinius Statius (ca. 45-96) is the author of two epics (the "Thebaid" and the unfinished "Achilleid") and a large corpus of occasional verse ("Silvae"). This poetry, long seen as derivative or decadent, is increasingly appreciated for the daring and originality of its responses both to the Greek and Latin literary tradition and to the contemporary Roman world. This volume offers the papers delivered at a symposium on Statius (Amsterdam 2005) by leading scholars in the field from Europe and North America. These papers demonstrate the fascination of Statius' poetry on account of the poet's vast knowledge of Greek and Latin tragedy, his rapid narrative, psychological acumen, brilliant eulogies, and pessimistic views on gods and men. The focus of the collection is on literary technique in the "Thebaid," on socio-historical aspects of the "Silvae," and on the reception of Statius in European literature and scholarship.

Book Synopsis A Dialogue on the Law of Kingship Among the Scots by : Roger A. Mason
Download or read book A Dialogue on the Law of Kingship Among the Scots written by Roger A. Mason and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Buchanan (1506-82) was one of the most distinguished humanists of the Northern European Renaissance. Hailed by his contemporaries as the greatest Latin poet of his age, he is chiefly remembered today as a radical political theorist whose Dialogus, first published in Edinburgh in 1579, justified the deposition of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1567 on the basis of a theory of popular sovereignty, which vested in the people the right to resist, depose and kill tyrannical monarchs. Immensely influential in radical circles both in Britain and on the Continent, it made a notable contribution to the debates over the nature and location of sovereignty which would finally bear fruit in the writings of John Locke. This critical edition and translation of the Dialogus makes available for the first time a modern scholarly version of one of the key texts in the history of early modern British political thought.
