Book Synopsis Contemporary Research on Bryophytes by : Afroz Alam
Download or read book Contemporary Research on Bryophytes written by Afroz Alam and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference provides information about recent trends in bryology in parts of India, tropical rainforests and arctic regions. Bryophytes are the earliest land plants and quite fascinating in their overall diversity. All through its history, bryological study has contributed considerably to the field of plant sciences, for instance, the discovery of sex chromosomes in plants. The study of bryophytes is fundamental to our understanding of land plant evolution, and the latest progress in molecular phylogenetics and genomics have given researchers a clear depiction of land colonization of plants and subsequent terrestrial progression. Ecologically, the importance of bryophytes for the participation in biogeochemical cycles, in particular carbon cycle is now appreciated. Further, there has been an escalating interest in the conservation biology of bryophytes. The contributors have put forward holistic information regarding current research scenario of bryology in a range of environments to readers learning about research in applied bryology. The compilation of reviews presents reported findings related to various aspects of the subject, such as, conservation, diversity, tissue culture, bio-monitoring, computational bryology, molecular bryology, and species. Botanists and bryologists will receive updated information that will be valuable for their research work. The reader-friendly text is also suitable for beginners in applied plant science. Recent Advances in Botanical Science provides updated research and reviews on topics related to plant biology, genetics, taxonomy and ecology. The series is a useful resource for readers interested in applied plant science.

Book Synopsis Liverworts, Mosses and Hornworts of Southwest Asia (Marchantiophyta, Bryophyta, Anthocerotophyta) by : Harald Kürschner
Download or read book Liverworts, Mosses and Hornworts of Southwest Asia (Marchantiophyta, Bryophyta, Anthocerotophyta) written by Harald Kürschner and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bryophyte flora of Southwest Asia is the first comprehensive, structured synthesis of the current knowledge available on the liverworts, mosses and hornworts of this region. The area covers Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sinai Peninsula, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen (incl. Socotra Island), summarized to a great extent as 'Asia 5' in the 'Index Muscorum'. In total, 1193 taxa (229 liverworts, 959 mosses, 5 hornworts) and nearly 2000 names and synonyms were treated in the dichotomous keys presented, including annotations to critical, doubtful or erroneously recorded species. 14 taxa represent new country/regional records and are listed together with their collecting data in a separate paragraph. The book includes all bryophytes known to date within the large and geomorphologically varied area. Many of the species are important initial colonizers of bare rocks, crusts and soil surfaces of steppes and deserts of this region and therefore forerunners in vascular plant colonization and succession. Because they serve as indicators of ecological disturbances and air quality, their knowledge is of fundamental importance for understanding phytodiversity and ecosystem evolution. This flora provides users with an up to date tool for at least a preliminary identification of any bryophyte in the area and may stimulate and promote greater interest in this often neglected or overlooked plant group. The flora is recommended to all botanists and ecologists, interested in bryophyte flora and vegetation, biodiversity, and nature conservation.
Book Synopsis Biodiversity Hotspot of the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka by : T. Pullaiah
Download or read book Biodiversity Hotspot of the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka written by T. Pullaiah and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 861 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate due to anthropogenic activities around the world. This book is the first volume in the new series Biodiversity Hotspots of the World, which highlights the 36 hotspot regions of the world, regions that were designated as reaping maximum benefit from preservation efforts. This series is our humble attempt to document these hotspots as a conservation and preservation measure. This first volume in the series focuses on the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, construed as forming a community of species because of their shared biogeographical history. The volume explores the diversity and conservation efforts of the extraordinarily rich species found here, including plants, many of which are found nowhere else in the world; forests, which face tremendous population pressure and have been dramatically impacted by demands for timber and agricultural land; as well as the hotspot’s diverse mammals, birds, insects, and amphibian species, and more. The volumes in this series will be essential resources for researchers and practitioners in the fields of conservation biology, ecology, and evolution.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with liverworts and hornworts of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Biogeographically it covers the Mediterranean and Eurosiberian regions. This handbook comprises identification keys to generic and specific level with corresponding illustrations. Each genus includes a short morphological description referring only to the species that appear in the present work. In monospecific genera the species name follows the description; if plurispecific a key to species is given. We recognised 286 species, which represent 68% of the European hepatic flora.

Book Synopsis Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts by : IUCN/SSC Bryophyte Specialist Group
Download or read book Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts written by IUCN/SSC Bryophyte Specialist Group and published by World Conservation Union. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryophytes are of great importance in their ecosystems and for human well-being. They stabilize soil crust through colonization of bare grounds and rocks; they are essential in nutrient recycling, biomass production, and carbon fixing; they control water through an effective retention mechanism; and they have economic value as peat for fuel, horticulture, oil absorption, and as sources of a wide variety of chemical compounds. Bryophytes have long been used for medicinal purposes and provide a food source for reindeer, geese, ducks, sheep, musk-ox, lemmings, and other rodents. Threats include deforestation, cultivation of forests, reclamation of land, urbanization, roads, dam-building, mining, drainage of wetlands and over-grazing. This plan reviews the situation worldwide and proposes a variety of initiatives. It is aimed at those who work with and care about nature conservation, including governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as politicians and the general interested public.

This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new, enlarged and revised flora replaces the former flora "The Liverworts, Mosses and Hornworts of Southwest Asia (Marchantiophyta, Bryophyta, Anthocerotophyta)" (2011) which was the first comprehensive bryophyte flora and wellstructured synthesis of the current knowledge available on the liverworts, mosses and hornworts of Southwest Asia (Near and Middle East). As the former flora, this enlarged and revised new edition covers Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sinai Peninsula, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen (incl. the Socotra Archipelago), summarized to a great extend as "Asia 5" in the "Index Muscorum". Since the first publication in 2011, scientific interest in bryophytes drastically increases, resulting in more than 70 additional species, formerly unknown to the area and the first moss records to Qatar Peninsula. In total, nearly 1400 taxa (255 liverworts, 1128 mosses, 5 hornworts) and nearly 2300 names and synonyms were treated. The dichotomous keys provide families, genera and species, including annotations to distribution and to critical, doubtful or erroneously recorded species. The flora includes all bryophyte taxa known to date within this large and varied climatological and geomorphological area. It responds to the tools of the Conservation on Biological Diversity and the Target 1 of the updated Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. Main goal beside identification is to achieve a checklist of all known plants of this often neglected and/or overlooked group of organisms. It is a further step to integrate Southwest Asia (Near and Middle East) into the Global Network of floristic knowledge. As many of the species are important initial colonizers of bare rocks, crusts and soil surfaces in steppe and desert regions of the area and are forerunners in vascular plant colonization and succession, their knowledge is of fundamental importance for understanding phytodiversity and ecosystems and provides access to taxonomic information, important for nature conservation. It enables us to give a more precise answer to the question how many plant species occur in the area and it is a step to enhanced education and scientific understanding on the wealth of plant diversity. The book is recommended to all botanists and ecologists, interested in bryophyte flora and vegetation, biodiversity and nature conservation and may stimulate and promote greater interest in bryophytes. We hope, it is also in future a mandatory reference for students, experts and researchers.
