Book excerpt: When two Americans crash land in the South Pacific, they are immediately taken hostage by an all-female tribe. But this is no Paradise Island; Wonder Woman is nowhere in sight. Little do they know the horrors that await! Originally published as "Island of Captive Girls" in 1953, Brutal Punishment for Captive Girls went through various permutations under numerous publishers, including Irving Klaw and Times Square owner and operator, Edward Mishkin. This newly restored classic quite simply features some of the best fetish art by Gene Bilbrew under his rogue alias, "Eneg," produced only three years after he had switched careers from professional singer to underground cartoonist. It contains both volumes, originally published separately, and, as a bonus, includes the continuation of the tale as it originally appeared in 1953. Let this unique, subversive collection be your introduction to this great, neglected African American artist. Pick up your copy today! Also available on Amazon: Gene Bilbrew Revealed, a biography of the artist's life illustrated with hundreds of images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unforgotten Women of the Islamic State explores the governance of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization through the lives and words of local Iraqi, Syrian, and Kurdish women. While the roles and activities of foreign (predominantly Western), pro-IS women have garnered significant attention, the experiences and insights of local civilian populations have been largely overlooked. Drawing on the testimonies of 63 local Sunni Muslim and Yazidi women, Gina Vale exposes the group's intra-gender stratified system of governance. Eligibility for the group's protection, security, 'citizenship', and entrance into the (semi-)public sphere were not universal, but required convergence with the gender norms of IS, through permanent erasure or at least temporary disguise of certain markers of difference. In some cases, this was directed by a pre-meditated 'divide and conquer' strategy, while in others, it manifested as unregulated violences at the hands of individual group members, including women. The structure follows the trajectory of IS's increasing control over its 'citizens' and captive populations: its militarization of society; imposition of law and order; provision of goods and services; and intervention in civilians' private lives. Analysis of diverse first-hand accounts and the group's documentation reveals that the presence, exclusion, and victimization of local civilian women were necessary to the functioning and legitimation of IS's 'caliphate' project, and the supremacy of affiliated men - and women. As a fledgling proto-state, IS needed local Iraqi, Syrian, and Kurdish women. Though far from represented or protected, they were by no means forgotten.

In our own Scriptures, war texts that appear to approve of genocidal killings and war rape raise hard questions about biblical ethics and the character of God. Have we missed something in our traditional readings? Identifying a spectrum of views on biblical war texts, Webb and Oeste pursue a middle path using a hermeneutic of incremental, redemptive-movement ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh knew they were putting their lives on the line. Islamic laws in Iran forbade them from sharing their Christian beliefs, but in three years, they’d covertly put New Testaments into the hands of twenty thousand of their countrymen and started two secret house churches. In 2009, they were finally arrested and held in the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran, a place where inmates are routinely tortured and executions are commonplace. In the face of ruthless interrogations, persecution, and a death sentence, Maryam and Marziyeh chose to take the radical—and dangerous—step of sharing their faith inside the very walls of the government stronghold that was meant to silence them. In Captive in Iran, two courageous Iranian women recount how God used their 259 days in Evin Prison to shine His light into one of the world’s darkest places, giving hope to those who had lost everything and showing love to those in despair.

Book excerpt: With hundreds of rare and extraordinary images culled from his influential 24-year career, this volume illustrates the story of the first black career fetish artist in history: Gene Bilbrew, a.k.a. "Eneg," a man whose unique vision redefined cutting-edge art of the 1950s and '60s. Tracing his life from childhood in Los Angeles to his vocal group days with The Mellow Tones and the Basin Street Boys, to his sudden rise as a "bizarre art" rebel in New York City, GENE BILBREW REVEALED presents a vibrant overview of his work for renegade publishers Irving Klaw, Leonard Burtman, Edward Mishkin and Stanley Malkin, while also exploring his sometimes contentious, love-hate relationship with fellow art pioneer Eric Stanton. GENE BILBREW REVEALED is a must-have visual experience for underground comic art fans, pulp art collectors, enthusiasts of outsider art, and, of course, lovers of classic vintage fetish art. From vintage fetish art specialist, Richard Pérez Seves, author of Eric Stanton & the History of the Bizarre Underground, and CHARLES GUYETTE: Godfather of American Fetish Art (both available now on Amazon). ❈ ❊ ❖ ❄ ❆ ❋ ❂ ⁂

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 2.7 million Africans made an enforced crossing of the Atlantic on British slave ships between c.1680 and 1807--a journey that has become known as the 'Middle Passage'. This book focuses on the slave ship itself. The slave ship is the largest artefact of the Transatlantic slave trade, but because so few examples of wrecked slaving vessels have been located at sea, it is rarely studied by archaeologists. Materializing the Middle Passage: A Historical Archaeology of British Slave Shipping,1680-1807 argues that there are other ways for archaeologists to materialize the slave ship. It employs a pioneering interdisciplinary methodology combining primary documentary sources, maritime and terrestrial archaeology, paintings, maritime and ethnographic museum collections, and many other sources to 'rebuild' British slaving vessels and to identify changes to them over time. The book then goes on to consider the reception of the slave ship and its trade goods in coastal West Africa, and details the range, and uses, of the many African resources (including ivory, gold, and live animals) entering Britain on returning slave ships. The third section of the book focuses on the Middle Passage experiences of both captives and crews and argues that greater attention needs to be paid to the coping mechanisms through which Africans survived, yet also challenged, their captive passage. Finally, Jane Webster asks why the African Middle Passage experience remains so elusive, even after decades of scholarship dedicated to uncovering it. She considers when, how, and why the crossing was remembered by 'saltwater' captives in the Caribbean and North America. The marriage of words and things attempted in this richly illustrated book is underpinned throughout by a theoretical perspective combining creolization and postcolonial theory, and by a central focus on the materiality of the slave ship and its regimes.

Book excerpt: All I want is my freedom. But the Bratva leader won't take no for an answer… My first husband is dead and buried. I’m left a widowed mafia princess—a dangerous title to hold, especially when one man already has his eye on me. Viktor Andreyev. His own men call him Ussuri. The Bear. Older than me, with a reputation for violence and a cruel exterior to match, he’s no one I would ever choose for a husband. In fact, I’d hoped that I’d never have to marry again at all. But he’s made the price for peace my hand in marriage. And it’s clear that I can’t refuse. I’ve survived marriage to one cruel man already. I’m no fragile princess. I know I can survive this. But the secrets of the Bratva are darker than even I realized, and the more I learn, the more desperate I am to escape. Only one man, and the temptations he poses, stand in the way. He holds my body captive. But he’ll never hold my heart. Captive Bride is book one in the Bridal Trilogy. The trilogy is complete. Reading order Captive Bride, Stolen Bride and Beloved Bride.

In this indispensable work, a brilliant thinker suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul.
