A great battle that meant so much for the history of English isles but have not yet been located. The saga is based on poems by Egill made at the time of the battle. The saga is based on poems by Egil as he claimed to have been a participant in the battle of Brunanburh and there he lost his brother Thorolf. In his poem he uses the name Vínu as the name for the place and we hope that name will help locate the battlefield. Using the name and description in the saga we want to come forward with our idea that the battle field is near Vinovia on the Roman Road, Dere street, in the county of Durham. And the battle was fought in a field close to and north of Hunwick. In his Poem he refer to Vinu/Vina as the place where Egill buries his brother Thorolf, who died in the battle. We assume it to be the Roman fort of Vinovia. In the saga we have description of a field big enough with river on the east side and wood on the west side. Sloping area on the north side where the Scots and their allies did camp and sloped hill on the south side where the king's men camped. All this can be found on a location right north of Hunwick, which is only one kilometer northwest from the bridge over the river Wear from Vinovia. The saga tells of two towns in intermediate distance and we assume Durham to be the one in the north and Darlington in the south. We hope that there are some evidences in museums and libraries that can shed further light on the matter and would appeal to the professions of sociological nature to investigate in view of our theory, that the battle of Brunanburth was fought in a field north of Hunwick in the county of Durham. We assume that this text should be interesting and important for many professions and the British society. There has never been made a serious attempt to search for the site for the battle by using Egil's saga as a reference point. We both hope that the readers can take interest in this eventful and significant battle that was fought nearly eleven hundred years ago.

We focus on two known poems that describe the events in detail; that is the Brunanburh poem and the poems in Egil's saga as well as other known sources for this battle. The poems in Egil's saga are contemporary with the events, even though the saga was written in the 13th century, the poems are older and are thought to be the work of Egill Skallagrímsson himself. We also use other references that conform to elements in other known sources like the issue of silver in this time. We conclude from all these sources that the Battle might have been fought in Hunwick in County Durham. We revive the poems in Egil's saga, the Brunanburh poem and the relation these poems have with the old Icelandic poem Völuspá and we conclude that the Brunanburh poem is much related to these Old Icelandic poems and Egill Skallagrímsson might have been the poet of the Brunanburh poem.

Book excerpt: Around 1,100 years ago a group of Viking settlers from Scandinavia arrived somewhere between Þorsteinnstún (Thurstaston) and Melar (Meols) on the shores of north Wirral – a small peninsula lying between the Rivers Dee and Mersey – having been driven out of Ireland. This initiated a mass migration of their fellow countrymen into the area and soon they had established a community with a clearly defined border, its own leader, its own language, a trading port, and at its centre a place of assembly or government – the Thing at Þingvöllr (Thingwall). This community was answerable to nobody else: the English, the Welsh, the Dublin Norse, the Isle of Man, Iceland, and not even Norway. The Wirral-Norse settlement therefore satisfied all the criteria of an independent, self-governing Viking state – albeit a mini one! This book, written by Wirral-exile and scientist Steve Harding, is about these people, why they left Scandinavia, where they settled, their religion and their possible pastimes. Wirral was also probably witness to one of the greatest battles in the history of the British Isles – Brunanburh. The third edition of this highly popular book has been updated to incorporate the identification of the mysterious Dingesmere in the Battle, the importance and relation of Wirral to the wider Viking Commonwealth, including the Isle of Man, North Wales, Scotland and Ireland, together with the results from the Wirral and West Lancashire Viking DNA project, where up to 50% of the DNA of men from old Wirral and West Lancashire families appeared to be Scandinavian in origin.

Book excerpt: Egil's Saga tells the story of the long and brutal life of tenth-century warrior-poet and farmer Egil Skallagrimsson: a morally ambiguous character who was at once the composer of intricately beautiful poetry, and a physical grotesque capable of staggering brutality. The saga recounts Egil's progression from youthful savagery to mature wisdom as he struggles to avenge his father's exile from Norway, defend his honor against the Norwegian King Erik Bloodaxe, and fight for the English King Athelstan in his battles against Scotland. Exploring issues as diverse as the question of loyalty, the power of poetry, and the relationship between two brothers who love the same woman, Egil's Saga is a fascinating depiction of a deeply human character.

Who were their leaders? What was the impact of their raids? These and many more questions are answered in this volume, which will benefit students and general readers alike. The only encyclopedia devoted specifically to the topic of conflict, invasions, and raids in the Viking Age, this book presents detailed coverage of the Vikings, who are infamous for their violent marauding across Europe during the early Middle Ages. Featuring extracts of poetry and prose from the Viking Age, the book provides cultural context in addition to an in-depth analysis of Viking military practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral epic poetry is still performed by Turkic singers in Central Asia. On trips to the region, Karl Reichl collected heroic poems from the Uzbek, Kazakh, and Karakalpak oral traditions. Through a close analysis of these Turkic works, he shows that they are typologically similar to heroic poetry in Old English, Old High German, and Old French and that they can offer scholars new insights into the oral background of these medieval texts.Reichl draws on his research in Central Asia to discuss questions regarding performance as well as the singers' training, role in society, and repertoire. He asserts that heroic poetry and epic are primarily concerned with the interpretation of the past in song: the courageous deeds of ancestors, the search for tribal and societal roots, and the definition and transmission of cultural values. Reichl finds that in these traditions the heroic epic is part of a generic system that includes historical and eulogistic poetry as well as heroic lays, a view that has diachronic implications for medieval poetry.Singing the Past reminds readers that because much medieval poetry was composed for oral recitation, both the Turkic and the medieval heroic poems must always be appreciated as poetry in performance, as sound listened to, as words spoken or sung.

Today, England and Scotland limit their fierce rivalry to the football field, but as historian Rupert Matthews demonstrates in this engaging volume, this was not always the case. Before the eighteenth century Act of Settlement in the Eighteenth Century, these neighboring lands were locked in a long, contentious, and often bloody conflict. Matthews has researched more than twenty major battles between England and Scotland. They range from the seventh century Battle of Degsastan to the Jaobite Rising’s bitter end at Culloden in the eighteenth century. Each battle forms a chapter, explaining the causes of the conflict, the forces involved, the battle itself, and a brief guide to the battlefield as it is today.
