Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetics of Aggregation and Gelation presents the proceedings of the International Topical Conference on Kinetics of Aggregation and Gelation held on April 2-4, 1984 in Athens, Georgia. The purpose of the conference was to bring together international experts from a wide variety of backgrounds who are studying phenomena inherently similar to the formation of large clusters by the union of many separate, small elements, to present and exchange ideas on new theories and results of experimental and computer simulations. This book is divided into 57 chapters, each of which represents an oral presentation that is part of a unified whole. The book begins with a presentation on fractal concepts in aggregation and gelation, followed by presentations on topics such as aggregative fractals called ""squigs""; multi-particle fractal aggregation; theory of fractal growth processes; self-similar structures; and interface dynamics. Other chapters cover addition polymerization and related models; the kinetic gelation model; a new model of linear polymers; red cell aggregation kinetics; the Potts Model; aggregation of colloidal silica; the ballistic model of aggregation; stochastic dynamics simulation of particle aggregation; particle-cluster aggregation; kinetic clustering of clusters; computer simulations of domain growth; and perspectives in the kinetics of aggregation and gelation. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of chemistry, theoretical physics, and materials engineering.

Book Synopsis Time-resolved Investigation of Aggregation and Gelation of Colloids by : Ronny Vavrin
Download or read book Time-resolved Investigation of Aggregation and Gelation of Colloids written by Ronny Vavrin and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we present a study of the aggregation and sol-gel transition of colloidal suspensions using a wide range of experimental techniques. We investigate in the first part of this work a model system which undergoes a sol-gel transition in the hope to gain further insight into the fundamental process of gelation. Therefore, a colloidal suspension of nano particles (polystyrene spheres) in water is destabilised to induce aggregation of fractal clusters. The clusters will grow until they finally all connect and form a gel. Combining neutron and light scattering, we are able to measure simultaneously and time resolved the static and dynamic properties of the same sample, which allows us to test well-known theories and to compare our data with recent results of other research groups. Our measurements demonstrate a deviation from classical theories in the critical behavior just before the gel is formed, which we interpret as a glassy cluster phase. The second part of this work describes an experimental setup which is based on a multiple scattering suppression scheme and which allows us to measure even relatively turbid samples faster and with higher precision.
Book Synopsis Springer Handbook of Aerogels by : Michel A. Aegerter
Download or read book Springer Handbook of Aerogels written by Michel A. Aegerter and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 1778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This indispensable handbook provides comprehensive coverage of the current state-of-the-art in inorganic, organic, and composite aerogels – from synthesis and characterization to cutting-edge applications and their potential market impact. Built upon Springer’s successful Aerogels Handbook published in 2011, this handbook features extensive revisions and timely updates, reflecting the changes in this fast-growing field. Aerogels are the lightest solids known to man. Up to 1000 times lighter than glass and with a density only four times that of air, they possess extraordinarily high thermal, electrical, and acoustic insulation properties, and boast numerous entries in Guinness World Records. Originally based on silica, R&D efforts have extended this class of materials to incorporate non-silicate inorganic oxides, natural and synthetic organic polymers, carbon, metal, and ceramic materials. Composite systems involving polymer-crosslinked aerogels and interpenetrating hybrid networks have been developed and exhibit remarkable mechanical strength and flexibility. Even more exotic aerogels based on clays, chalcogenides, phosphides, quantum dots, and biopolymers such as chitosan are opening new applications for the construction, transportation, energy, defense and healthcare industries. Applications in electronics, chemistry, mechanics, engineering, energy production and storage, sensors, medicine, nanotechnology, military and aerospace, oil and gas recovery, thermal insulation, and household uses are being developed. Readers of this fully updated and expanded edition will find an exhaustive source for all aerogel materials known today, their fabrication, upscaling aspects, physical and chemical properties, and the most recent advances towards applications and commercial use. This key reference is essential reading for a combined audience of graduate students, academic researchers, and industry professionals.

Book Synopsis Dispersion Stability, Microstructure and Phase Transition of Anisotropic Nanodiscs by : Ravi Kumar Pujala
Download or read book Dispersion Stability, Microstructure and Phase Transition of Anisotropic Nanodiscs written by Ravi Kumar Pujala and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the dispersion stability, microstructure and phase transitions involved in the nanoclay system. It describes the recently discovered formation of colloidal gels via two routes: the first is through phase separation and second is by equilibrium gelation and includes the first reported experimental observation of a system with high aspect ratio nanodiscs. The phase behavior of anisotropic nanodiscs of different aspect ratio in their individual and mixed states in aqueous and hydrophobic media is investigated. Distinct phase separation, equilibrium fluid and equilibrium gel phases are observed in nanoclay dispersions with extensive aging. The work then explores solution behavior, gelation kinetics, aging dynamics and temperature-induced ordering in the individual and mixed states of these discotic colloids. Anisotropic ordering dynamics induced by a water-air interface, waiting time and temperature in these dispersions were studied in great detail along with aggregation behavior of nanoplatelets in hydrophobic environment of alcohol solutions.
Book Synopsis Hydrodynamic Simulations of Colloidal Gels by : Michael Dean Bybee
Download or read book Hydrodynamic Simulations of Colloidal Gels written by Michael Dean Bybee and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2009 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BD simulations are also performed, and the results are compared with those of the FLD simulations. Remarkable agreement is observed for both the microstructure and dynamics, suggesting that the structural evolution and dynamics of colloidal suspensions with short-range attraction and long-range repulsion under quiescent conditions may not be very sensitive to the effects of hydrodynamic interactions.
