Book excerpt: It's the first century A.D. and Marcus Didius Falco, Ancient Rome's favorite son and sometime palace spy, has just been dealt a lousy blow from the gods: The beautiful, high-born Helena Justina has left him in the dust. So when the Emperor Vespasian calls upon him to investigate an act of treason, Falco is more than ready for a distraction. Disguised as an idle vacationer in the company of his best friend Petronius, Falco travels from the Isle of Capreae to Neapolis and all the way to the great city of Pompeii...where a whole new series of Herculean events—involving yet another conspiracy, and a fateful meeting with his beloved Helena—are about to erupt.... Lindsey Davis' Shadows in Bronze is historical mystery at its best.

Book excerpt: Who is The Shadow? How did he come to be? Master of Mystery: The Rise of The Shadow delves into the murky origins of perhaps the most significant media creation of all time. Between 1930 and 1954, The Shadow was a dominant figure in American popular culture. A multi-media sensation, he emerged from the creative cauldron of the earliest days of radio drama, and soon migrated to magazines, comic books, film and eventually paperback books. Only Superman and Batman, who were created a few years later, rivaled The Shadow in global public recognition. A century later, this enigmatic personality and his famous mantra, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" remains recognizable to new generations born long after his remarkable reign. Popular culture historian and novelist Will Murray explores radio's first superstar and talks to the writers and artists who took a nebulous radio personality and brought him to blazing life in the pages of more than 300 classic pulp novels. Packed with revelations, Master of Mystery reveals how The Shadow inspired the creation of Batman in 1939! Including rare interviews with Walter B. Gibson, Theodore Tinsley, John L. Nanovic, Graves Gladney and Edd Cartier.

While on a date with Mia Ortiz, personal assistant to one of the firm’s wealthiest clients, Joe walks into a grisly murder scene. Mia’s boss, Cordelia Barrett, and her son lie sprawled in a pool of blood. Joe knows Cordelia has recently changed her will, turning off the flow of money to her hotheaded son. But the police don’t agree with Joe’s theory of murder/suicide and arrest Mia for murder. Meanwhile, fellow lawyer Jerry Dan Kovacs is determined to prove the death of the firm’s senior partner wasn’t an accident. While Joe works fervently to free Mia, another body turns up and he must unravel a web of secrets to discover who is using murder to claim the rights of heir apparent. Book excerpt: Suppose you had scientific evidence that a soul—meant by God to be eternal—existed in man. Suppose you—and only you—knew that man had created a form of radiation that not only killed, but destroyed the soul as well. Concerned about mass disillusionment and hysteria, who could you tell? What would you do? Now suppose an Army officer, bent on making general and also fully knowledgeable about the radiation, intends to use it as a weapon. Aided by CIA-like operatives, he will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. When he finds out you share his secret, what can you do? Thought provoking and controversial, Shadows is a metaphysical thriller. For protagonist Alex Feher it’s a dangerous, paradox-defying journey from the mysterious Black Mesa and the intrigue of Los Alamos, New Mexico, to Washington, D. C. and finally to the doors of the Pentagon. Shadows provides a theoretical but plausible model for the soul, offering rational explanations for phenomena such as ESP, out of body experiences, love at first sight, déjà vu sensations, and even reincarnation. An American Indian version of the soul, based on myth but consistent with the model, helps weave the fabric of the story.

Book excerpt: "Wonderful . . . J. V. Jones is a striking writer." So says Robert Jordan, the author of The Wheel of Time epic fantasy series. And Jones lives up to that praise in the highly charged epic adventure of Ash March and Raif Sevrance, two outcasts whose fate are entwined by ancient prophecies and need, in the cold, dark world that threatens to be torn asunder by a war to end all wars. Isolated by their birthrights, they are but two who fight the dreaded Endlords, and their strength and courage will be needed if the world is to be saved from darkness." Raif, wrongly accused and cut off from his clan by the treachery of their new headsman, has a talent for killing that is part of his curse and his burden. But he bears another burden of greater weight. Ash is a sacred warrior to the Sull, an ancient race whose numbers have declined. Raised as a foundling, never knowing her true history, she must learn to accept the terrible gifts of her heritage. But as Ash learns more of her greater fate, Raif's task looms dark and desperate, for he must journey through the nightmare realm of the Want, a place where even the Sull now fear to tread. For deep within the Want is the Fortress of Grey Ice, and there he must heal the breach in the Blindwall that already threatens the world. Should he fail, not even Ash's powers can save them. . . . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study Daniel R. Schwarz argues that the narrative and representational aspects of Stevens's poetry have been neglected in favour of readings that stress his word play and rhetoricity. Schwarz shows how Stevens's concept of representation is deeply influenced by modern painters such as Picasso and Duchamp. He shows that Stevens's poetry needs to be understood in terms of a number of major contexts: the American tradition of Emerson and Whitman, the Romantic movement, and the Modernist tradition.

Scott-Elliot) The lost world is a subgenre of the fantasy or science fiction genre that involves the discovery of a new world out of time or place. King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard is sometimes considered the first lost-world narrative. Haggard's novel shaped the form and influenced later lost-world books, including Kipling's The Man Who Would Be King, Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, Burroughs' The Land That Time Forgot, A. Merritt's The Moon Pool, and H. P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. James Hilton's Lost Horizon used the genre as a takeoff for popular philosophy and social comment and it introduced the name Shangri-La, a meme for the idealization of the lost world as a paradise.

Book excerpt: An essential book for all readers of poetry, and the definitive collection from the man Harold Bloom has called “the best and most representative American poet." Originally published in 1954 to honor Stevens’s seventy-fifth birthday, the book was rushed into print for the occasion and contained scores of errors. These have now been corrected in one place for the first time by Stevens scholars John N. Serio and Christopher Beyers, based on original editions and manuscripts. The Collected Poems is the one volume that Stevens intended to contain all the poems he wished to preserve, presented in the way he wanted. It is an enduring monument to his dazzling achievement.

Book excerpt: Among the poets new to this edition are such leading names as Americans Robert Pinsky, Louise Erdrich and Louise Glück; Britons James Fenton and Carol Ann Duffy; and Canadians Anne Carson, Robert Bringhurst, and Christian Bök. A number of names who may be new to many readers of poetry are also included among them: Ohioan Debra Allbery, Vancouverite Elise Partridge, and the Cree poet Connie Fife; as with the first edition, the editors have endeavored to include much that is fresh as well as much that is familiar. There are many additions to the selections from poets who appeared in the first edition including selections from the recent work of Leonard Cohen, Les Murray, and Margaret Atwood. As before, the anthology includes work from English-language poets throughout the world from India, Africa, and the Caribbean as well as from Britain, North America, and Australia. Although the selections from the work of poets of earlier eras are largely unchanged from the first edition, there have been some changes; among poems added for this edition are Milton’s L’Allegro and Il Penseroso, Bradstreet’s “Employment,” Dickinson’s “I cannot live without You,” Frost’s “Once by the Pacific,” and Auden’s “Funeral Blues.” As before, the text emphasizes work of the past century; poems from 1900 or later take up more than half of the anthology’s pages. In its first edition The Broadview Anthology of Poetry included biographical information about the poets at the back of the anthology; for the new edition, biographical material appears in a headnote to each poet. Two other features are also new to this edition: the date of first publication is appended after each poem, and line numbering is used throughout. The numbers have been kept unobtrusive, however; as with the first edition, the designers have endeavored to give a clean look to the pages of the anthology. A substantial section on prosody, figures of speech, and so on is included as an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these essays some of today's leading literary scholars and cultural critics re-examine major writers, genres, and themes in relation to their traditional period affiliations. The essays cover a broad range of writers and periods from the Middle Ages to the present, grouped in two main areas: Chaucer and Medieval and Renaissance studies (Larry D. Benson, Heiko A. Oberman, Lee Patterson, and Aldo Scaglione), and English and American literary history (Sanford Budick, H. M. Daleski, Denis Donoghue, Robert J. Griffin, Geoffrey Hartman, J. Hillis Miller, Jerome McGann, and Helen Vendler). In addition to shedding new light on a specific author, each essay also refines or reinvigorates critical approaches to specific periods. The analyses illuminate and clarify our understanding of what are traditionally but problematically called the Medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Romantic, Modern, and Postmodern eras in European cultural history.
