Book excerpt: “Nothing in my army training had prepared me for what happened in Jerusalem in February 1965.” In Chris McQuaid’s stunning memoir, Elegy for a Broken Soldier, a traumatic event led to his Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Music became the only respite that provides him solace. Chris was a member of the Irish Army guard of honour for the visit of US President John F. Kennedy to Dublin in June 1963. With the cheers of the crowds lining the presidential route still ringing in his ears, he felt “ten feet tall” as he prepared for his first UN peacekeeping mission to the Congo. On a UN mission to Cyprus in 1965, trauma changed Chris’s life forever, marking the beginning of his PTSD. In Lebanon in 1980, his life was threatened, and the shock effectively ended his military career. Neither event originated on the battlefield, but from within the Irish Army. Despite severe depression and suicidal thoughts, Chris continued his education and returned to the service to become a commissioned officer. He left the army in 1986 with a glowing service record. A long legal wrangle and a succession of psychiatric and psychological assessments have led to even greater health problems, but Chris has survived it all.

Book excerpt: Mental illness and trauma often lead good people down a very dark road, but there is light at the end of the tunnel""and no, it's not a train headed toward you. The story of The Soldier and the Bear is about one man's battle with post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder and his journey back to hope and believing life is worth living again. With his newfound hope, he fights this psychological battle a little differently than he did before. He fights with a renewed strength that comes from a renewed mind. His weapon is no longer overmedicating or alcohol, and suicide is no longer an option. His weapons are now faith, hope, love, the Word of God, and a red golden retriever named Bear. He is no longer alone in the battle, and you don't have to be either. We believe you and your loved one struggling with the same or similar mental illnesses will also find hope once again upon reading his story. The challenge set before you in acquiring this new life-changing hope is to read this book, seek out God, and determine yourself to take one day at a time with a renewed mind-set. One that simply says, "I am worth it," and "I won't give up." It won't happen overnight, but remember, baby steps are progress. Life is too valuable and precious to let it slip away. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Book excerpt: A Soldier’s Heart is a moving and expansive memoir by Vietnam Veteran Ray Gauvin. The story takes us from the French Ghetto of Presque Isle, Maine, and the descendants of the Acadians, to military bases all over the country, and to Vietnam and back. Gauvin takes an unflinching look at life on the ground in Saigon and the horrors of the unusual and classified military posting of WDMET. The ingenuity and work ethic he built to help support his family as a kid got him through both the loss of his father and the war. But afterwards, pushing himself to the edge with striving and responsibility became a compulsion that staved off the nightmare. Silent about the classified mission of WDMET, even to his family, Gauvin wrestled on his own with the effects of Agent Orange and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He became an entrepreneur, a businessman, and a philanthropist, but PTSD kept him embroiled in an internal battle between his obsession to work, his drive for success, a search for peace of mind, and thoughts of suicide. But after fifty years of running from the past, he turned about-face, and began the journey of remembering and healing. This book is a must read for anyone seeking an inside look at one man’s road to Vietnam, and WDMET. It also gives incredible insight into the history of francophone communities in Northern Maine.

He is also a biker, hunter, mechanic, outdoorsman, your neighbor, a friend, and again, just an ordinary person. Monty spent 12 years in the Army and felt called to leave the military to pursue ordination as a pastor so he could return to the military as a chaplain. While those doors did not open, God did open other doors that guided him to become an ordained inter-denominational minister. The way God did that was unusual to say the least. The story is in the book. After being obedient to God and becoming ordained by God himself (you will have to read the story) Monty was still just a lump of clay on the table. God calls Monty into being a pastor of a church! I know right? God makes it clear that he wants Monty inside the church and no longer preaching just in the highways and byways! You have just got to read the story, it is amazing! So, don’t just open the front page and check the water with your feet! Dive in and get submerged immediately! If you are looking for edification, encouragement, confirmation, or just want an easy to read book, you have found it. Enjoy and may God touch you and guide you as you travel through time with Monty. Hang on as you ride back into the past then back again and what a ride it is!
