Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two years after Uncle Stalin led the Soviets to victory in the Great Patriotic War, Mama brings Mila home from the delivery ward. Aunt Nastya takes one look at the baby and states her heels are too skinny, a sign she doesn’t belong to this world. Could Aunt Nastya be right? Is Mama doomed to lose her precious newborn? Eighteen months later, Mila miraculously survives one of the world’s deadliest earthquakes in Ashkhabad, the capital of the Soviet Republic of Turkmenistan. In the wake of the destruction, her family has no choice but to bury the dead and forge ahead, trusting the Great Architect of Communism will provide for them once again. Broken Kaleidoscope Syndrome is a remarkable memoir and revelatory coming-of-age story about growing up in one of the far-flung Soviet republics in Central Asia. From beekeeping as a child in the desert and sipping her first glass of Ter-Bash, to grappling with a culture of corruption and bribery, Kraabel offers an intimate, unblinking look at life in the Motherland, where camels roam the desert and pungent aromas of melons and herbs waft in the streets. As Mila grows, she questions the ideals that fuel the communist machine, wondering whether the future is as bright as dear Uncle Stalin said.

Book excerpt: Kaleidoscope is Marcela’s Del Sol’s first work of fiction; a collection of beautifully written reflections about the life and struggles of a woman co-existing with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) and Dissociative Identity Syndrome (DID). Marcela Del Sol is an Australian writer, philanthropist and social activist. She moved to Australia from her home country, Chile, as a young adult, and, a few years ago, began to share her physical existence with multiple alters of her character, following a serious car accident. As the incapacitating symptoms of her disorder started to appear in Marcela’s daily life, she not only learned how to adapt to living as multiple alters in the same body, but also found the courage to thrive under challenging circumstances. In Kaleidoscope, Marcela shares her own personal coping mechanisms and strategies through the voice of her fictional character, Lucia. Join Lucia and her captivating alters on an extraordinary journey into the mind and heart of a woman who lives with Dissociative Identity Syndrome. The deeply compelling chapters, narrated by the various alters of the author and her main fictional antagonist, reveal much about the strength of the human spirit, and its ability to find a way back from the darkest of places, where everything seems lost.

As the sun was setting, we could hear Mom ringing the dinner bell. With a country meal on the table, Dad began to say the blessings. Believing life was simple, I had no idea of the turmoil ahead of me. After high school, I soon married, and my life changed forever as the beatings began. And within a few years, we had two little girls. I turned to the church for help, but they told me to turn the other cheek. My family could not help me financially. With no one to turn to, I fell into the darkness. So I filed for a divorce. One day, the girls' father took them for a weekend visit but ended up kidnapping them for three years! I prayed every day for my children's safety. Finding my girls was by the grace of God. We suffer with an emotional handicap, but because of our strong faith in God, we all now have wonderful lives. And I hope my book will touch many lives, covering issues such as bullying, human trafficking, women's rights, and spousal abuse to name a few. Writing Edge of the Light has given me a chance to continue to heal. Each chapter is inspired by one of the seven divine powers. The edge is a most divine place to be, it is structured by the hand of God. There you will be comforted and healed. Never lose hope, for the darkness is short-lived, but the Light shines forever. I can now ring my bell of freedom!

Dr. George Jacob was born in Quilon, now, Kollam, in Kerala, India on October 6th, 1965. He is the oldest of four children born to his parents, the late Mr. E.V. Jacob, a seafood exporter and Mrs. Elizabeth Jacob, who was a lecturer in Zoology at St. Teresa’s College, Cochin, at that time. He passed MBBS from Medical College, Kottayam, Kerala, India in 1990, and later M.S (General Surgery) from the same college in 1996. He then started his career as a surgeon in a busy Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, which functioned in three major hospitals in the private sector in Cochin. Ten years later, at 39, just as he was beginning to realize his passion as a surgeon, he su¬ ered a massive stroke that paralyzed the left side, wreaking his surgical career in the process. This ‘bolt from the blue’, necessitated change of vocation from that of a surgeon to that of an Intensivist in the Surgical ICU, where he works as Senior Specialist. Having lost the sense of direction in life, at least momentarily, he took to writing. He found a new avenue to express himself, through the unfamiliar world of letters, exchanging his scalpel for the pen, in the process. His new-found passion had him contribute in various sections of the national daily, the New Indian Express.

Join the Abominable Snowman as, determined to transcend his cannibalistic past, he studies Tibetan Buddhism under the Dalai Lama. Pace the walls of Ilium with fair Helen as she tries to convince both sides to abandon their absurd Trojan War. Visit the nursery of Zenobia Garber, born to a Pennsylvania farm couple who accept her for the uncanny little biosphere she is. Scramble aboard the raft built by the passengers and crew of the sinking Titanic—and don’t be surprised when the vessel transmutes into a world even more astonishing than the original Ship of Dreams. Reality by Other Means offers readers the most celebrated results from James Morrow’s decades-long career designing fictive thought experiments. Anchored by seven previously uncollected stories, this omnibus ranges from social satire to theological hijinks, steampunk escapades to philosophical antics.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the often uncomfortable interplay between autistic individuals, parents and professionals in understanding autistic spectrum conditions, Olga Bogdashina uses the concept of Theory of Mind (ToM) to consider these groups' different (and often conflicting) perspectives. ToM is the ability to imagine and make judgements about what others feel and think; its absence in autistic individuals is called 'mindblindness'. This book addresses the 'mindblindness' of people united in their interest in autism but divided by their different angles and perspectives. Divided into four parts, the book first defines autism, then the views of the three main groups working with it - autistic individuals, parents and professionals - under the headings of classifications, diagnosis, causes, development, theories and treatment. By comparing and reconciling the different perspectives in this way, the book helps each group to understand and predict each other's responses and behaviours. This enlightening and innovative book offers a unique way of 'stepping in each other's shoes' and is a valuable resource for all people living or working with autism.

Over the past three decades, the most adventurous practitioners of the literary arts of science fiction, fantasy, and horror have been transforming those genres into something all but unrecognizable. In Conjunctions’ game-changing New Wave Fabulists issue, guest editor Peter Straub has put together an anthology of innovative literary reinventions of traditional “pulp” forms. Contributors range from Jonathan Lethem to Neil Gaiman, from John Crowley to Kelly Link, from Elizabeth Hand to China Miéville. Gary K. Wolfe and John Clute contribute essays on the ongoing evolution of genre, while the brilliant cartoonist Gahan Wilson has created the cover and original frontispieces for each story.
