Book excerpt: Everyone has a story; this book just happens to be a glimpse into the story of my life. I guess you can say it's the story of many lives. As I traveled through life's journey, I met many who had similar, if not the same story. My life was tumultuous; I grew from a broken child to a broken woman. Despite the trials and tribulations life threw at me, I was blessed with five beautiful children, and I embraced every ounce of good times when they did happen. I was the oldest, as a child I had adult responsibilities and I had to grow up fast. I am a survivor of molestation, some may call themselves a victim, but not me. The struggle was hard, because it changed the course of my life, but I knew I had to preserver. I married way to young, although my children loved me unconditionally, I was never able to find that kind of love from a man. I was inspired to write my story, because no child should have to suffer at the actions of a molester. The person who is supposed to love and take care of them, would take the very thing that protected that child, their innocence. Their first line of defense had been destroyed, and the child is left with nothing but pain and confusion. Generation after generation of molestation is repeated and kept quit as a dirty little secret. My prayer is the following pages will bring hope, freedom, triumph and relief for those who were met with the same fate. This is my story.

Book excerpt: This open access book is a unique resource for health professionals who are interested in understanding the philosophical foundations of their daily practice. It provides tools for untangling the motivations and rationality behind the way medicine and healthcare is studied, evaluated and practiced. In particular, it illustrates the impact that thinking about causation, complexity and evidence has on the clinical encounter. The book shows how medicine is grounded in philosophical assumptions that could at least be challenged. By engaging with ideas that have shaped the medical profession, clinicians are empowered to actively take part in setting the premises for their own practice and knowledge development. Written in an engaging and accessible style, with contributions from experienced clinicians, this book presents a new philosophical framework that takes causal complexity, individual variation and medical uniqueness as default expectations for health and illness.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 Pura Belpre Award! “A book for anyone mending from childhood wounds.”—Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street In this unforgettable multicultural coming-of-age narrative—based on the author’s childhood in the 1960s—a young Cuban-Jewish immigrant girl is adjusting to her new life in New York City when her American dream is suddenly derailed. Ruthie’s plight will intrigue readers, and her powerful story of strength and resilience, full of color, light, and poignancy, will stay with them for a long time. Ruthie Mizrahi and her family recently emigrated from Castro’s Cuba to New York City. Just when she’s finally beginning to gain confidence in her mastery of English—and enjoying her reign as her neighborhood’s hopscotch queen—a horrific car accident leaves her in a body cast and confined her to her bed for a long recovery. As Ruthie’s world shrinks because of her inability to move, her powers of observation and her heart grow larger and she comes to understand how fragile life is, how vulnerable we all are as human beings, and how friends, neighbors, and the power of the arts can sweeten even the worst of times.

Book excerpt: A devastating account of how Australia’s family courts fail children, families and victims of domestic abuse The family courts intimately affect the lives of those who come before them. Judges can decide where you are allowed to live and work, which school your child can attend and whether you are even permitted to see your child. Lawyers can interrogate every aspect of your personal life during cross-examination, and argue whether or not you are fit to be a parent. Broken explores the complexities and failures of Australia’s family courts through the stories of children and parents whose lives have been shattered by them. Camilla Nelson and Catharine Lumby take the reader into the back rooms of the system to show what it feels like to be caught up in spirals of abusive litigation. They reveal how the courts have been politicised by Pauline Hanson and men’s rights groups, and how those they are meant to protect most – children – are silenced or treated as property. Exploring the legal culture, gender politics and financial incentives that drive the system, Broken reveals how the family courts – despite the high ideals on which they were founded – have turned into the worst possible place for vulnerable families and children. Camilla Nelson is an associate professor in media at the University of Notre Dame Australia. A former Walkley Award winner, her writing has appeared in The Conversation, The Independent, Guardian Australia, Mamamia, Marie Claire and the ABC. Broken is her fifth book. Catharine Lumby is a media professor at the University of Sydney. She has a law degree, is the author of six books and has written for The Guardian, The Sydney Morning Herald, ABC-TV and The Bulletin. 'What happens to kids in our family law system should be a national scandal – and yet, so few people know about it. This book finally lifts the lid on this broken system, and shows how this once-great institution now regularly orders children to see or live with dangerous parents, and bankrupts the victim-parents trying to protect them. An urgent call to action.'—Jess Hill, author of See What You Made Me Do 'This searing review of Australia’s family court system is in turns heartbreaking and enraging. Drawing on recent cases and interviews, it shows how family violence continues to be misunderstood and how violent perpetrators are able to manipulate the legal system. It reveals that too often children are not heard, sometimes with devastating outcomes. This book is an urgent appeal: we must do better.'—Professor Heather Douglas, author of Women, Intimate Partner Violence and the Law

Book excerpt: You are not alone! You don't know pain until you are stuck in the dark with an aching heart, uncontrollable tears, and the only thing you can do is pray for God to take it all away by any means necessary. If you are like I was, you are asking yourself questions like: ?How did I get to this point??When did I lose all interest in myself? What did you do to deserve this? When you are at the point where you can no longer pretend that everything is ok and the love you had for yourself has been diminished, guess what? You can and will make it through all of that. From a Broken Girl to a Healing Woman is a correlation of poems and letters BALAIJ wrote at some of the darkest moments of her life to express the phases of being hurt, undervalued and abused to ultimately transitioning to a healing woman.Filled with transparency about insecurities, childhood trauma, heartbreak, and more, she eventually pulled herself together and transformed all that hurt into a healing heart with purpose."There's purpose in your pain. We are going to laugh, cry, and most importantly, start the healing process TOGETHER." - BALAIJ "Learning to love yourself again and healing from past hurt is not a quick fix; it's a journey with many beautiful rewards. So let's go, sis. I got you. I promise you will love yourself again." - BALAIJ
