Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the geographical center of Berlin, the neighboring boroughs of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg shared a history and identity until their fortunes diverged dramatically following the construction of the Berlin Wall, which placed them within opposing political systems. This revealing account of the two municipal districts before, during and after the Cold War takes a microhistorical approach to investigate the broader historical trajectories of East and West Berlin, with particular attention to housing, religion, and leisure. Merged in 2001, they now comprise a single neighborhood that bears the traces of these complex histories and serves as an illuminating case study of urban renewal, gentrification, and other social processes that continue to reshape Berlin.

Book excerpt: In the wake of the Presidency of George W. Bush, the discussion about the separation of church and state has gained momentum. Where does the coveting of the Religious Right by the Bush Administration fit into this picture? What role do the attempted Gay-Marriage Ban and the "Compassionate Conservatism" language play? This book examines these questions and make a connection between the politics of Neo-Conservatism and the social movement of the Religious Right.
Book Synopsis Church and State by : John R. Stumme
Download or read book Church and State written by John R. Stumme and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age marked by controversy over public support of religious schools, federal encouragement of religious providers of social services, and sexuality education, the whole arena of church-state relations appears in flux. In this volume, seven experts probe the meaning of religion in public life for Christians when the "Protestant establishment" has given way to pervasive religious pluralism and a growing secularism. Working specifically out of Lutheran traditions, the authors probe the deeper legal, moral, and religious questions at issue in the current debate. They not only rethink classical sources about law and gospel and two-kingdoms theory but also resurrect neglected resources for Christian civil resistance. They then look to contemporary developments and show how functional interaction of church and state is compatible with their strong institutional separation. Finally, three chapters probe the most hotly contested First Amendment questions: religious liberty, education, and land use.

Book Synopsis Global Secularisms in a Post-Secular Age by : Michael Rectenwald
Download or read book Global Secularisms in a Post-Secular Age written by Michael Rectenwald and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Secularisms addresses the state of and prospects for secularism globally. Drawing from multiple fields, it brings together theoretical discussion and empirical case studies that illustrate "on-the-ground," extant secularisms as they interact with various religious, political, social, and economic contexts. Its point of departure is the fact that secularism is plural and that various secularisms have developed in various contexts and from various traditions around the world. Secularism takes on different social meanings and political valences wherever it is expressed. The essays collected here provide numerous points of contact between empirical case studies and theoretical reflection. This multiplicity informs and challenges the conceptual theorization of secularism as a universal doctrine. Analyses of different regions enrich our understanding of the meanings of secularism, providing comparative range to our notions of secularity. Theoretical treatments help to inform our understanding of secularism in context, enabling readers to discern what is at stake in the various regional expressions of secularity globally. While the bulk of the essays are case-based research, the current thinking of leading theorists and scholars is also included.
Book Synopsis Theology, History, and Biblical Interpretation by : Darren Sarisky
Download or read book Theology, History, and Biblical Interpretation written by Darren Sarisky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian Bible serves as the sacred scripture of the Christian community. It is read regularly by many people around the world today, as it has been for centuries. But how should one interpret this text? This reader presents a variety of perspective on how to relate historical and theological considerations when approaching the Bible. It encourages students and scholars to ponder how historical and theological categories shape one's view of three crucial realities: the text of the Bible, the human subject who reads the text, and the nature of the exchange between the two in the practice of reading. As historical and theological categories are applied to these realities, are they mutually exclusive, or can they be combined in some way? This reader encourages students and scholars to explore these important questions by bringing together a selection of some of modernity's most influential discussions of the issues as well as some of the present day's most distinguished attempts to weigh in on the debate.
Book Synopsis The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" in Nazi Germany by : Horst Junginger
Download or read book The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" in Nazi Germany written by Horst Junginger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" in Nazi Germany describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called “Judenforschung” (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting “Jewish problem”. Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution.
